This needs to be a video game. Now.
Travellers Tales, the studio behind the games, put together a tech demo for LEGO Hobbit about three years ago, long before LEGO even had the LotR license. I'd like to think that that might have motivated LEGO to pursue the license. This needs to be a video game. Now.

Slightly off topic, but Nicolas Cage was almost in Lord of the Rings.
The transcript doesn't elaborate on what role he was considered for because it was fan submitted question interview. All I have to say thank god he turned it down.
On the other hand, he would have fit it in perfectly in The Matrix...
Peter Jackson has set the final piece for his two-picture adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit. Billy Connolly has joined the cast in the role of Dain Ironfoot, a great dwarf warrior and cousin of Thorin Oakenshield. “We could not think of a more fitting actor to play Dain Ironfoot, the staunchest and toughest of Dwarves, than Billy Connolly, the Big Yin himself. With Billy stepping into this role, the cast of The Hobbit is now complete. We can’t wait to see him on the Battlefield!”
Azog, who led the Orcs in that war, has apparently been cast, so it does sound like we'll be getting a flashback to it. Probably something akin to how they handled the War of the Last Alliance in LOTR.I hope they include a flashback of the War of Dwarves and Orcs. Dain and Thorin play big roles in that.
I've been a fan of his since he took over from Johnny Fever as the Teacher on that 1980s Sitcom Head of the ClassI fucking HATE Billy Connolly. This is the first disappointing news I've read about this movie.
