Remember when the SR-71 was the very pinnacle of aeronautical achievment?

EDIT: I just looked it up. The SR-71 still holds the Flight airspeed record.

The OFFICIAL flight speed record...talking with SR-71 pilots even it went faster and higher than the official records.

There was a recently unclassified document that proved the SR-71 once violated Swedish airspace. Two Saab 37 Viggen fighters were sent up after it. Later, the pilots jokingly referred to it as the "Black Speed Demon".

Subsonic: Viggens kept up. Supersonic: Viggens kept up. Mach 2: Viggens fell behind. Mach 3: Bye bye, lads!

My dad was an ATC in Frankfurt during the VC. SR-71s flew over all the time. They designators they used started getting kind of "obvious" so they knew when one was coming.

He and the other guys in his unit used stop watches to try and calculate how was they were going (since it was still classified). Even now he's pretty certain they were going faster than three-two.
