So, Okuda has stated they will edit out "distracting" easter eggs from TNG-R. Do you think they'll remove Tasha waiving at the end of Symbiosis?

Rumor control: He was specifically talking about some jokes on LCARS displays.

In other words: He gives no reason to think that, IMHO.

Why do all of these before/after transition links being posted have the new bluray screen caps being compared with what appears to be a capture from a dusty VHS tape, pulled out of a box from a shed, and then played back on a broken TV and then photographed with a Kodak Disc camera and scanned in?
Not that far from the truth. TNG was actually mastered on videotape originally, so when it was first put on DVD, it was copied from that video. It was never even up to DVD standards, let alone modern HD TV standards.

Your question's already been answered, but since I uploaded about a half dozen of them and you've probably seen a few of mine specifically, I'll just tell you exactly what I did because you're actually justified in wanting to know how they were taken:

  1. Popped the appropriate Region 1 DVD in my laptop
  2. Found the right frame (or close to it)
  3. Captured a png image @ 720x540 with Power DVD (no filters or effects)
  4. Scaled the png in Photoshop to 1440x1080 using "Bicubic Smoother"
  5. Increased canvas size to 1920x1080, adding black pillar bars
  6. Saved it as jpg @ 100%

Two questions (I realize these may change when we finally see live footage versus the screen caps we've been dissecting, but we've got DAYS still to kill, so)...

1. Which episode (out of the entire series) do you think will benefit the most from the Blu-ray release given the 'improvements'?

2. Which episode (of the entire series) do you personally look most forward to seeing given the 'improvements'?

'Improvements' is a broad word here - not only picture quality, but the subtle "improvements" as we have seen in all the screen caps so far (the beam in EaF, the little changes/additions/whatever to the village in The Inner Light, etc.)

Personally, I'm looking forward to any exterior location photography. We get a little bit already in "Farpoint" (Griffith Park) but these are the others that I'm aware of (excluding stock shots from the films):

Justice (Tillman Water Reclamation Plant in Van Nuys)
The Survivors (Malibu)
Who Watches the Watchers (Vasquez Rocks)
Ménage à Troi (Hunington Library Botanical Gardens)
Family (Picard home in Encino & vineyard in Lancaster)
Final Mission (El Mirage Dry Lake Bed in San Bernadino)
Qpid (Descanso Gardens in La Canada Flintridge)
Darmok (Bronson Canyon in Hollywood)
Ensign Ro (Bronson Canyon in Hollywood)
Silicon Avatar (Disney Ranch in Santa Clarita)
The First Duty (Tillman Water Reclamation Plant in Van Nuys)
Time's Arrow, Parts I & II (Pico House and Olvera Street in LA)
A Fistful of Datas (Warner Brother's Backlot)
Descent, Parts I & II (Brandeis Bardin Institute in Simi Valley)
Gambit, Part I (Griffith Park)
Attached (Bronson Canyon in Hollywood)
Homeward (Bronson Canyon in Hollywood)
Emergence (Paramount Backlot)
All Good Things... (Temecula)

(Yes, I looked them up! I think that's all of them :))

As far as high-concept, VFX heavy or just plain fun episodes, I'm quite looking forward to seeing:

Where No One Has Gone Before
11001001
Heart of Glory
We'll Always Have Paris
Where Silence Has Lease
Elementary Dear Data
Contagion
Time Squared
Q Who
Peak Performance
Evolution
Booby Trap
Yesterday's Enterprise
Tin Man
The Best of Both Worlds, Parts I & II
Brothers
Remember Me
Future Imperfect
Devil's Due
Clues
The Nth Degree
Redemption, Parts I & II
A Matter of Time
Cause and Effect
The Next Phase
Relics
Ship in a Bottle
Tapestry
Starship Mine
Timescape
Phantasms
Parallels
The Pegasus
Genesis

This isn't a comprehensive list, despite it's appearance... just off the top of my head.

I have a question ---

Everyone who is posting those before & after transitions --- the old footage which, when mouse-overed, change to the new footage ---

Why do all of these before/after transition links being posted have the new bluray screen caps being compared with what appears to be a capture from a dusty VHS tape, pulled out of a box from a shed, and then played back on a broken TV and then photographed with a Kodak Disc camera and scanned in?

I can't fracking wait until the bluray is out, but non-HD STTNG never looked nearly as bad as most of these "before" pictures I've seen in this thread. If the screen caps in this thread are to be believed, TNG was never watchable.

Edit to add: I never once noticed a difference between any shot of the Enterprise, so 4 foot model, 2 foot model, 6 foot, 18 foot, RPG miniatures, whatever - I swear I wouldn't be able to tell the difference if I had a Veron-T disrupter to my head. The new stuff looks fantastic so far though.

When I watched Naked Now I wondered why a brand new show had a lines of resolution through the ship...even on my little 19" crt from the time. Photos in the official magazine had few FX shots cause the resolution was so poor, the shot with the E-D separation demonstrated it in EaF. It's never looked perfect.

One of the noticeable things from season 3 onwards was the new model....it was a trade-off, new angles, new shots but an inferior looking model. Don't know how you missed it.

Was looking through photos I used for my database software and no I have to replace them all! It showed me some of the cool eps and scenes we have to look forward to.

Any time a TV series is too early for a clip show, unless it's a sitcom where clip shows can make an ounce or two of sense.

Well they came out of a writer's strike, barely got a 22 season in and had to do something to make up for big budget shows like Q Who...a clip show was the inevitable result.

True, but the studio wanted another clip show in season four, and that eventually turned into "The Drumhead," one of that season's highlights. They just had to be creative to save some money. I think "The First Duty" was a money-saver as well, and that was Wesley's best episode (justified the entire character, IMO).

Sometimes you have to fail and do things the pat, Hollywood way before you learn from your mistakes...if The Drumhead was a direct result, the you can thank Shades of Gray, and it was a lesson well learned.

This is very minor but it looks like the titles/credits are slightly brighter and the lettering more spaced out,

Not that I'm complaining or anything but in an odd sort of way I'm going to miss those old fonts I have seen over and over again throughout the years ;)

I know it's an obvious answer, but I'm really looking forward to seeing the Enterprise-C in HD. And also the awesomely dark and creepy Time Squared, with that shot of the Enterprise falling into the vortex.

Elementary, Dear Data is another one that could probably really benefit from HD, with all the great period detail in that episode.

I'm also curious to see what they do with the Crystalline Entity. They'll almost certainly have to replace it, considering it was a pretty shaky effect even back then.

The shame of it is, with the flashback device this was a great opportunity to delve more into Riker's past, or to explore his history with Troi, or to show us moments between episodes that we hadn't seen before.

Instead he conveniently only flashes back to... the first and second seasons.

Yeah, it looks like they also neglected to re-create the 3D drop shadow.
Here's something a little closer without the nasty composite crawl of the DVD:

I want to be clear though to those who are already sharpening thier knives at the mere mention of a miniscule mismatch (Alliteration!): I simply don't care that much. And the replacement looks fine. It's just not as accurate as it could be.

:techman:

I don't like the new font. Frankly, I'm disgusted and shall boycott the Blu-ray until they fix this glaring fault.

"Conveniently", yes. That's what clip shows do. It's cheap. That's why they get made.

They gave up the Riker-Troi thing pretty quickly. In the pilot they’re presented like Decker and Ilia: still very much in love, and never able to say goodbye.

Then after that it’s more like they’re old friends who once dated, but it was no big deal.

Why the change?

Oh, I know why it was done, still doesn't make up for the fact the episode was pure crap.

I didn't mind it at the time - as I hadn't recorded most of the first season

And strangely enough when it came to the Conspiracy creature clip, the BBC cut less than they did when it was shown in Conspiracy!

I wonder if when a new 2 part version of Farpoint is made for broadcast if the same cuts will be made, or if they will try and cut less this time.
