That whole wood gag on the show tonight was so fracking hilarious. I couldn't stop laughing.

I beg to differ. I thought the wood gag went on too long. I know it was a Leonard/Penny episode and they had to give something for the others to do, but it just kept going and going and going. It was okay, just dragged out too long.
I thought the gag was funny because I've played settelers of catan and done that gag on my friends while playing.

This sums up my feeling on this pretty well too.
But I think it was too long on purpose. Since the conceit ended up being that it was all part of Leonard's imagination, the joke was really that's how he perceives Sheldon to be.
They may have a live audience, but they will certainly add laughs (even if they are recorded from said live audience), especially when a scene needs several takes and the joke wears off.
The laugh tracks of Two and a Half Men and Big Bang Theory have a lot of repetitions. You can always hear the same love in different episodes. Sometimes even several times in the same episode.

Pages and pages discussing whether there's a laugh track or not, I post a refutation of laugh track use by the producer himself (including a photo of the live audience), and you don't see how it's relevant?
What I find annoying about the current season of BBT is that they seem to be moving away from the geek/science jokes towards constant relationship stuff. And there already are hundreds and hundreds of sitcoms dealing with that. I don't mean that BBT has to do away with the dating episodes, but please please please bring science stuff back in.
(And Leonard & Penny... pffffft. Dysfunctional. Leonard is whiny and annoying. Bring Leslie Winkle back to shape Leonard up.)

I'm afraid that's not gonna happen because relationship humor is mainstream and this sells.. both to the audience and to the advertisers.
Sine BBT became successful they have steadily reduced the ratio of science-related jokes because, let's face it, the general population might (and i stress might) not get it and tune out because it's a weirdo show with wierd jokes nobody gets.. even if that's not true (and all the jokes are understandable with a little bit of general knowledge and a bit of interest in science) producers won't take the risk and take the safe route.

While I do still enjoy the show and it is my favorite comedy what you have said is true.
I am on a Big Bang Theory Message board and the consensus there is the show has moved away from its Geeky roots and is becoming another regular sitcom.
Yeah, it's kind of becoming "Friends - now with nerds!" Especially with the situation they have now that the girls hang out in Penny's apartment and the boys in Leonard & Sheldon's.
