Villains of Star Trek

Sybok is the only guy who might surpass him in non-villainous acts, and he's arguably not even a villain, just an antagonist. I mean for god's sake, the whalers from Voyage Home offered more tension in their acts than this guy.

As did the hoodlum on the bus with the loud radio and the shape-shifter on Rura Penthe

I still think Dougherty was an idiot to be wandering about on the Son'a ship without any other Starfleet presence.

they initially seemed to be on friendly enough terms. I don't think Dougherty had cause for suspicion or mistrust.

Granted I'm looking at the film from a biased perspective, but I can't say that the Son'a ever seemed to come across as especially trustworthy. If I was an admiral I would have at least had an aide present.

Soran and the Duras sisters weren't ugly or physically repulsive.

That was the movie they made the joke with the sisters using Geordi's VISOR to spy on the ship and they see Beverly Crusher up close and one of them says something like "human females are so repulsive!" (A "look who's talking!" moment for the audience.)

Of course Soran looked human, like Guinan.

I wonder about all that Rua'fo bashing when he's one of the very few Trek villains who actually has a believable motive.

Claims that he's not bad enough are greatly exaggerated. He supports the Dominion, he tricked the Federation into believing they'd relocate the Ba'ku, he didn't hesitate to kill every Starfleet officer that crossed his plans (which happened to be Data, who "had to be destroyed"), he attacked the Enterprise to destroy it. He only used the markers to beam up the Ba'ku because it was his friends Galna's idea. Otherwise he would have simply bombed the shit out of them. And even though they "safely" beamed everyone aboard, they gathered all of them in an unshielded area of the ship where they would all be killed by the radiation.

I mean how much more evilness do you need?

Lursa definitely got the crappier part of the Duras family gene pool.

he tricked the Federation into believing they'd relocate the Ba'ku
Throughout the movie, the Sona went out of their way to avoid harming the Baku. The holoship that was to be used to transport the Baku, was under Starfleet control. It was Starfleet that was going to be the ones to relocate the Baku, not the Sona.

Only the Starfleet personnel were to be moved to the lighty shielded rear of the ship, not the Baku.

:)

Facts have no place in a discussion about Insurrection. :techman:

Some of the Ba'ku were still on the planet though.

R'uafo -"This is going to end now. The Ba'ku want to stay on the planet. Let them. I'm going to launch the injector... In six hours, every living thing in this system will be dead or dying."

Dougherty -"If you begin the procedure while the planet's still populated, the Federation will pursue you..."

That's because Picard had them hiding near Kelvinite deposits. I think it finally pushed Ru'afo to the point that he needed to go forward with the procedure in order to survive...

Star Trek: Insurrection said:
S'ONA DOCTOR: Your body is producing far too many toxins. We've reached the limit of genetic manipulation.
RU'AFO: I won't need any more genetic manipulation if our Federation friends will allow us to complete this mission.

Regardless of whether you agree with Daugherty, Picard was the one that put the Ba'ku in mortal danger.

Sure, it was the wicked monster Picard who pushed the mild-mannered Ru'afo into first attacking the planet and then being eager to eradicate the Ba'ku. How can you defend a genocidal mass murderer without thinking twice about what you are typing?
You obviously missed that the So'na could have simply returned home without killing their parents. If you rewatch the movie you will realize that this is precisely what happens after Ru'afo is no more, the sons and daughters come home and at least their physical suffering ends. The other wounds will take longer to heal and how Ba'ku society changes after the technology-loving second generation returns to the technology-hating first generation which is after all the prime cause of the generational conflict remains an open question.
So much about facts.

Man, I wished I could always look at things in such a biased manner. Like it or not, Picard had the Ba'ku on the run hiding from the S'ona, knowing that Ru'afo was running out of time. Trying to spin it any other way is just pig-headed. Picard put them in danger of losing their lives in an immediate and brutal manner over property.

I also imagine that since the S'ona conquered two races, there are probably more than the ten or so we see in the film. We don't know how the rest of them feel or if they'll make another stab at getting the meta-phasic radiation.

Biased? You are the one who defends a genocidal mass murderer while I point out that there is a simple, peaceful solution which we actually saw at the end of the movie. Do you in general advocate senseless violence when there is a simple, peaceful solution? I seriously doubt it.

Do you actually read what you type before hitting 'submit'?

I defend the fact that Picard made a grave error in judgement in how he dealt with the situation.

Picard gambled that Dougherty alone would be able to control Ru'afo if the Ba'ku were hidden and the Enterprise was sent away.

It didn't work out that way and it nearly cost the Ba'ku not only the planet they were squatting on, but their lives as well.

"I think it finally pushed Ru'afo to the point that he needed to go forward with the procedure in order to survive.."

This is factually wrong as you deny the second option, peaceful reunification of the two generations. You deny this second option, defend Ru'afo and actually blame Picard for his crimes. About Picard's options, he could have done nothing, he could have informed the Federation council while the Ba'ku are deported or he could have informed the Federation council and prevent the deportation from taking place.
As Ru'afo showed that he had no intention of honouring any agreements with the Federation it is safe to assume that the Ba'ku would not merely have been deported but actually killed. Or do you also wanna blame Picard for Ru'afo's murder of Dougherty? Did the thought that Dougherty and Ru'afo are the actual culprits and not the man who puts his career and life on stake to safe the Ba'ku from deportation and murder ever cross your mind? What's next, an essay on how Spock is responsible for Nero's genocide?
