Riker: An underrated character?

Well comparing Nathan Fillion across two shoes is hardly similar to comparing Riker across one show, since the whole issue was about the figure changing during the show.

In that case, you spoke too soon and should wait until adequate time has passed to make an accurate judgment.

The difference is Frakes is playing a military officer and Fillion is playing a writer who tags along with the police. One would be expected to be in shape, the other not so much.

I'm not talking about the roles, I'm talking about their physical appearance over the course of a TV series. You_Will_Fail was comparing Frakes' 7 year run on TNG to Fillion's current 3 years on Castle. It's an unfair comparison as Fillion hasn't had the same amount of time to "settle".

Problem is that Frakes should've never 'settled' to begin with. There are rumors that producers threatened to dump Sirtis in season one because her weight fluctuated some. Frakes allowed the 'action role' to be taken from him because he didn't take his role seriously.

That sounds like a lot of speculation.

I'm pretty sure the Sirtis dirt was verified at some point and you're the one who used the term 'settle' when referring to Frakes weight gain.

"Settle" along with "settle in", terms used before I joined in the conversation above, and your post was still speculation.

Everything we talk about on here is speculation! :techman:

Yours tilted more toward 'gossip', which is a type of speculation that's very easy to toss out, but requires no support other than personal biases to hold it up.

It's not bias.

Frakes gained weight, as he gained weight the action role that was originally envisioned for him dwindled as did the popularity of the character. Not that hard to put two and two together.

So the Riker character became an administrative assistant.

See, now you're talking about his weight again. You were talking studio gossip earlier, and that is to what I was referring.

You mean my Sirtis comment? Just contrasting how two figures weight gain was handled on the same show.

But it has nothing to do with Frakes' weight gain. It's a juicy bit of side gossip, but it isn't relevant to Frakes' weight progression over the course of the series.

Sure it does. You think if Sirtis gained fifty pounds that she would still be around? If Frakes couldn't keep the action-hero physique then he should've been fired just like Sirtis if she couldn't keep the intergalactic cheerleader body.

No, it has nothing to do with Frakes' history of weight gain. It's studio gossip, and totally irrelevant to Frakes. If we were discussing weight gain and how it affected their careers, you might have a discussion (though it would still be gossip), but it's not, because that's not what was being discussed, and I, for certain wasn't discussing it.

I still think Riker losing the "action guy" role

1. overstated, since he was still the main away team leader, and

2. Due more to Picard's character change than Frakes' weight gain

I think his weight gain is a little exaggerated.

Season 1.

Season 7.

Sure, he's probably sucking in his gut in that last shot but there's only so much sucking in can achieve.

Agreed.

And why is Riker's weight gain so important to begin with? He's still the same guy we know and love from the first season, albeit less ambitious and more experienced. So what if he's a little chubbier.
