What A Friend We Have in Cheeses

or, "Cheeses is just alright with me".

I was just looking up some of my favorite kinds of cheese, and found that most of them are made in the U.S. This was surprising, as I was sure some of them originated in other countries. I love cheese, though. I have a particular fondness for "dry" cheeses. You know, crumbly, firm cheese. Some of my favorites are:

Parmesan
Swiss
Muenster
Cheddar (Sharp!)
Colby

Of those 5, 3 are found in the U.S. (I bolded them). Does the U.S. manufacture a lot of cheese, and if they do, how much do they export? If you live outside of the U.S., and have had cheese from here, what is your general opinion on it?

Also, of course, what are your favorite cheeses?! :D

For sandwiches and snacks, extra-sharp cheddar, thin-sliced deli Swiss, Muenster and provolone. For salads, crumbled feta or bleu cheese. And mozzarella string cheese is fun to eat because it’s shaped like a penis.

Never tried Ilchester, though.

ZOMG! That looks fantastic! Probably can't get it here in the U.S., but  !

Oh, yes, I like feta cheese in salads. It has a delightful zing to it, and takes away from the bitter lettuce (of which most restaurants have, as they use iceberg lettuce).

And this is mine:

Extra sharp, extra crumbly, always great. YUM!

Ooh. That looks good, too!

If you haven't guessed yet, I'm also looking at what people like so I can try something new. A website recommended I go to a Cheesemonger shop. That's all well and good if you don't live out in God's armpit, but I do, so that's not going to happen anytime soon.

Oh, also, another pun: "Cheeses take the wheel!"

I've never come across an American Cheese in the UK, Canadian yes but not American. But then again the UK alone has 700 named cheeses manufactured in the UK. Plus it's right next door to France which has a similair number of types of cheese. That's before we get onto the likes of Swiss, Italian and Greek Cheeses.

According to wikipedia in 2004 the top exporters (by moneteray value) where

France
Germany
Netherlands
Italy
Denmark
Australia
New Zealand
Beligium
Ireland
United Kingdom

Ehm, I don't think we import cheese from America...
Although i think i've seen Amercan cheese-spread(cheese whizz?!?) in a can once or twice...
We got plenty of cheeses to choose from, Dutch and European...
I like slightly mature Dutch cheese...
Gouda is good too...

[George Takei]Oh, my![/George Takei]

Our local farmers' market has a stand with incredibly good goats' cheeses. They're excellent on crackers with a glass or two of wine.

We always have mature cheddar in the house. A cheddar Ploughman's lunch with some local cider (Otter's is especially good) at the local pub is a lovely treat from time to time. Red Leiscester and Gloucester cheeses are a bit mild for my taste but are good in sauces.

You get them as part of the ingredients in a number of fast food outlets and some American-oriented restaurants. But yeah, I don't think I've ever seen American cheese in supermarkets.

That's a piss-poor performance when you think about it. Given the amount of cheese we make and eat, you'd think we'd export a hell of a lot more. I think a lot of regional cheeses get stuck at a small-scale production level, or at most enough for national chains, and never reach export level quantitities. Shame, considering how good the UK is at making cheese.

I'm not sure I would use the word "cheese" or "spread" to describe Cheese Whiz. It is, however, delicious.

"cheese related product", though "related" might be a bit strong. I like to put Cheez Whiz on a Clausen pickle with some sour cream (and no, I'm not pregnant).

I like a cheddar/jack mix on my fried egg sandwiches.

I get a super sharp cheddar & a garlic white cheddar from the big super-market I go to, just for eatin'.

I bought Limburger once, opened it, smelled it, then threw it out "cause you can't eat that shit"

Cheese. Serious stuff. An evening spent eating cheese morsels and drinking red wine is an evening well spent.

Some of my favourites (mostly Italian, Swiss and French, but Dutch cheese is good, too):

Brie
Camembert
Gorgonzola
Asiago
Emmental
Gouda
Beaufort
Swiss Gruyère
Fontina della Val d'Aosta
Toma piemontese
Mozzarella, especially mozzarella di bufala campana, and the cream-filled burrata
Squacquerone (try and pronounce it if you dare! :D)
Scamorza, especially scamorza affumicata (smoked)
And obviously the king of cheese, Parmigiano Reggiano (which is not simply Parmesan cheese).

One of the best things ever invented by man is hard cheese, honey, aceto balsamico, and red wine. Oh my.

Man. I crave cheese now.

This is my favorite "Imitation Cheese Spread"

^^ OMG, how old is that package? Fifty-nine cents for two pounds of cheese? I assume it's from the 1950s.

That box doesn't still have cheese in it, does it?

Reading this thread makes me Hanker for a hunk o' cheese. ;)

I prefer to eat it on it's own - not on crackers, not in a sammich, nuffink. I just want it's pure, unsullied awesomeness.

Buy some. Do it now. You'll thank me.
