Just a man. This poll is pretty silly.

Not to cast stones, but:
He slept with a lot of women, did a ton of drugs, went to a whole bunch of parties, and whored himself out for a SHIPLOAD OF MONEY!
Well...so did George Clooney but people consider him to be the UN Messenger of Peace.
So, go fig!![]()

That's Hollywood, dude.
I think a few things came to light prior to his death. And yeah, they were from people who lived and worked with him.Nobody really knows the truth about the man except those who lived and worked around him.
And keep in mind that it was only after Gene's death that all the negative things came out about him. That's always something I have always found to be a bit cowardly, because it is only honorable if you accuse a man of something if he is around to defend himself.
A saint, no. A good man, yes.
An individual can only be judged by what he/she leaves behind. And in my opinion, he left something pretty damn good.

Ever notice those who label others "haters" are often the most vicious? His haters were very critical of him. Beethoven's landlady hated him too. Great people are allowed great failure in my eyes. It really irks me when little people take pot shots at him and pull at his sweater threads. These people are destroyers because it makes them feel and look a little better and more important when they've created nothing great at all ever. Like getting advice on being married from a guy who's never been married. You have to break a few eggs to make an omelette, especially when you're not the only cook in a ferocious world of credit stealers and climbers and money grubbers like Hollywood. He tried and succeeded in doing something great. Leeway has to be given as it was to FDR, etc., exceptions to the rule. Usually the people that point a finger at him are much worse and hyppocrites to say the least but ironically we're not interested in assessing their reputation or holding them up to the light because they didn't create Star Trek and are probably miserable people anyway so we really don't care. Heck, some of us may be happy about that fact. Who knows.
Kind of reminds me of Nixon and deep throat - the ass that took him down. What an accomplishment that was. A few good men bullshit, there was a real war going on there. Or the so called commentator/ critic analist. Yea, more like a tape worm up the anis.

Hey, since it's Christmas: "He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone..."I disagree. A person shouldn't just be judged by what they left behind but also should be judged on how they treated others while they were here. YMMV.
