Not to cast stones, but:

He slept with a lot of women, did a ton of drugs, went to a whole bunch of parties, and whored himself out for a SHIPLOAD OF MONEY!

Well...so did George Clooney but people consider him to be the UN Messenger of Peace.

So, go fig! ;)

It just goes to show how he had this vision of the future where the acquisition of wealth was no longer the driving force in our lives yet he himself made quite a mint for himself through the convention circuit and by hawking Trek collectibles through his Lincoln Enterprises.

The biggest joke was that we all fell for it!:guffaw:

Grace Lee vehemently denies even having been involved with Gene in both her memoir. In fact, she jokes if she had given into his advances she might've been on the show for it's full run.

As to Gene's marriage to Eileen, my point is we don't know what happened there, so I'm dubious about making judgements. They could have been in a perfectly awful, loveless marriage that had nothing to do with Gene's philandering, or maybe the latter was what wrecked an otherwise okay marriage. I don't know, and I'm not comfortable damning someone for what I imagine was the case.

Nobody really knows the truth about the man except those who lived and worked around him.

And keep in mind that it was only after Gene's death that all the negative things came out about him. That's always something I have always found to be a bit cowardly, because it is only honorable if you accuse a man of something if he is around to defend himself.

A saint, no. A good man, yes.

An individual can only be judged by what he/she leaves behind. And in my opinion, he left something pretty damn good.

I think a few things came to light prior to his death. And yeah, they were from people who lived and worked with him.

I disagree. A person shouldn't just be judged by what they left behind but also should be judged on how they treated others while they were here. YMMV.

His haters were very critical of him. Beethoven's landlady hated him too. Great people are allowed great failure in my eyes. It really irks me when little people take pot shots at him and pull at his sweater threads. These people are destroyers because it makes them feel and look a little better and more important when they've created nothing great at all ever. Like getting advice on being married from a guy who's never been married. You have to break a few eggs to make an omelette, especially when you're not the only cook in a ferocious world of credit stealers and climbers and money grubbers like Hollywood. He tried and succeeded in doing something great. Leeway has to be given as it was to FDR, etc., exceptions to the rule. Usually the people that point a finger at him are much worse and hyppocrites to say the least but ironically we're not interested in assessing their reputation or holding them up to the light because they didn't create Star Trek and are probably miserable people anyway so we really don't care. Heck, some of us may be happy about that fact. Who knows.

Kind of reminds me of Nixon and deep throat - the ass that took him down. What an accomplishment that was. A few good men bullshit, there was a real war going on there. Or the so called commentator/ critic analist. Yea, more like a tape worm up the anis.

Ever notice those who label others "haters" are often the most vicious?

There's no hating to it. I simply refuse to deify someone who made a shitload of money preaching basic human respect, but didn't practice it.

They sometimes have to be. I love GR.

Ever notice how quick we are to listen to finger pointers who somehow manage to be beyond reproach, like say Harlan Ellison?

Hey, since it's Christmas: "He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone..."

No one is perfect. But I've never disrespected my wife by cheating on her nor did I ever steal from former co-workers to advance my position in life.

Guess I'm just weird...

Yes, those things, plus imho, having affairs at all, is wrong.

And, I'll bet he did a bunch of nice things that aren't famous.

Plus channel a bunch of tropes into a thing called Star Trek, which I really, really like.

Everybody's got the bad things. When someone does a remarkable thing, it's ok to call it remarkable and cherish the person and his or her accomplishment. That's terrible writing, but I hope you get the point. Be well, brothers and sisters.

We should not attack Roddenberry for his vices, whatever they may have been. In the end, we are no better. We are just as human and frasil and imperfect as he was. But he did have one heck of a vision and he shared it with us despite knowing his own vices would be brought up by those with limited imaginations.
