What was your first reaction to the Spock/Uhura romance?

Although I personally find both Uhura's immensley attractive, I only found the possiblity of romance in TOS to be credible. It was never suggested that Spock was a former teacher of hers in TOS.

The character of Spock would have never allowed himself to become involved with a student of his no matter how talented her tongue was.

With that said I can't say as I blame JJSpock, buuuuttt.......

I don’t think their relationship started when she was his student, remember when she confronts him about being on the Farragut she says in quote

'was I not one of your top students?'

Spock then mentions something about avoiding favouritism , which means he must have been warned by Star Fleet authorities about showing favouritism to his significant other who is no longer his student but still a cadet at the academy.

I think Spock-Saavik was brought up when someone said TOS Spock would never get involved with a student or subordinate. Although, they did get in on under ....unusual... circumstances, to say the least. And when they married (in the novel "Vulcan's Heart", it was about half a century later, after Spock had left Starfleet (still totally icky, IMO, even though that novel's not in the same continuity as "The Pandora Principle", where Spock rescues, names and civilizes Saavik)

Btw, I think Spock/Uhura was just fine. Good match, good for them. I can't quite see them them being a permanent item, though. The question is: Were they involved in the prime universe, either just before or at the start of TOS? (*cue someone's JJ-hating TOSser nerd rage*)

Possible I may have misread what CaptainMatt was saying. Probably have had a little to much Christmas cheer.

I'm surprised this has generated so many responses already!
Merry christmas and happy hanukkah, by the way.

Well, since the writers changed the story, I doubt it. TOS Uhura didn't study xenolinguistics.. so Spock wouldn't have been her teacher in that timeline, as this movie changed up things. I'm no Star Trek expert, so please correct me if I'm wrong anywhere

When Uhura discovers just how small a thing it really is, this relationship won't last.

what do you mean?

is it exactly what I am thinking of? lol

What was YOUR first reaction?

I was spoiled, through googling zoe saldana's involvement with the movie, and it was actually what caused me to want to watch it. It was my first experience with Star Trek. Before, all I knew was that Star Trek was in space.. and there was Kirk and Spock. uh, my excuse is that I'm 17

I honestly was going to just watch the movie for Kirk/Uhura (no shame, haha), because I couldn't find proper clips on youtube, and then I ended up watching the entire movie and freaking loved it. now, I'm just starting to watch TOS and etc. why hadn't I really heard of Star Trek before, and how cool it was? Now the scenes with Zapp Brannigan on Futurama are even funnier.

I hope the next film addresses how and when a romantic relationship began between them. They must be pretty close, because Spock wouldn't even let his mother put her fingers near his neck, to try and comfort him, but he let Uhura do that and more.

I wonder if Spock would have been as affectionate with Uhura, near the end of the film, if he didn't think he was going on a suicide mission. Cause isn't it his thing to be in denial of having human feelings? I wonder how he was impacted by his father saying he loved Amanda. Why is Spock so "logical" with everyone but Uhura? So many questions. It's really cute that he can't seem to say no to her.

Okay and random but what do you think Uhura would be constantly doing all night at the long range sensor lab? please tell me I'm not the only one who noticed something fishy with that, haha. unless she really constantly spent many nights nerding out about translations... and my mind goes to the gutter too easily

Hehe , my first thought was 'Wow so much a better match for her than Scotty from STV" (Still get the shudders with that one :P)

However all kidding aside, the film handled it so sweet and so well, it felt natural and thus I was fine with it. I am even eager to see what direction and depth (I hope) They choose to add to it in the next feature.

My own reaction was "Whoa. (Pause) W-e-l-l, why the heck not?"

First, there are snippets in the earlier TOS episodes that kind of hint at the possibility. Way back then, she addresses him several times in a very frank and decidedly non-military manner, there was their musical number in 'Charlie X', she expressed interest in learning to play the Vulcan harp in yet another episode, and some episodes later we saw her playing it. Fanfics totally aside (don't wanna know), I do get the impression that she was kind of chasing him rather than vice versa.

Second, he showed excellent taste. Can't fault him on that at all.

Third, I think the movie handled this extremely well. The whole thing could have easily gone into squick and/or farce, but it didn't.

Of course I was meaning the older post-TWOK era Spock and Saavik as a young woman. Vulcan's Heart definitely featured their getting together and is set many safe decades later than the fabled TOS era. :rommie:

Where in the TOS does it say that Spock wouldn't do something like this?? You may have inferred it, but Spock was never intended to be a eunuch or a monk or celibate. . .we know he had at least one affair (Leila Kalomi) during his time before the Enterprise, while he was on Earth, so that argument makes no sense since we never saw Spock at this time in his life in the TOS. . .plus, Uhura WAS NOT his student at this time. . .something the movie goes out of its way to say. . . and the whole "talented tongue" thing, is actually kinda insulting. . .

In the TOS Spock was never Uhura's teacher. . . he was on the Enterprise (which was built and launched earlier in the TOS) at the period when Uhura would have been in school. If you watch the earlier episodes, it seems that they meet on the Enterprise. So in the new universe, the Enterprise is built later, Spock is teaching at Star Fleet Academy, meets Uhura years earlier than he did in the original universe, at a time when he's not trying to be more Vulcan-than-Vulcans. . . I don't see how it's surprising that they could have a relationship in this timeline. . . btw, according to her official dossier on the ST09 site, Uhura is the assistant to two departments at the Academy, one of which Spock is a part of. . .that probably means she is a grad student working on her master's or doctorate (evidence by the fact that she is a lieutenant before the graduation, not an ensign), so given that they are both adults, there is really nothing wrong with them getting together romantically after she is finished taking classes from him.

As for the original post, Uhura did exactly what I wanted someone to do for Spock after his mother died and his planet disappeared. . . I was thinking, Oh wow, does he need a hug. Surprised, yes, but it was a good surprise, and needed at that time.

It was a surprise for me, but I didn't have any problems with it. I just didn't think it added anything to the overall plot.
