How about the person best suited to portray the character that the creators come up with? I mean, even though I really like George Clooney, and think he'd make a great Starfleet captain, if the part as written requires a petite blond woman, George probably shouldn't be considered for the role. And the thread is after all, who would YOU want to play the captain. It's a game, do play along.

If I could pick absolutely anyone to be captain, I'd pick Robert Mitchum. When he was late thirties to mid forties, one damn fine looking man. Had the cocky swagger down, could play world weary, and had experience playing military commanders.

Easy to see him on the bridge.

Well in terms of diversity star trek tends to do better then most scifi it really is amazing how much scifi sucks at diversity especially for males. Still how young we talking about unless your story is taking place in the middle of the war I am not sure I want 20 year old captains.
