New 'BATTLESHIP' trailer

It might it be what my mood will call for when it comes out.

Though it makes me long for films like I, Robot, where its 70% shameless blockbuster, but there is still that 30% of decent thoughtful sci fi.

I Robot is a good example of a movie that was successful in achieving the balance between mindless fun and thoughtful sci fi.
I completely agree... but I went conservative (30%0 on the intelligent thoughtful estimate so I wouldn't be chastised. I actually think it is an extremely intelligent film. i would go see more films like that gladly.

Regretfully, I jumped into the wading pool with the other nattering nabobs who insisted the film was an affront to Asimov's legacy. When I finally got around to seeing it on DVD, not only did I find it a remarkably good film, but found very little objectionable about it from an orthodox Asimov perspective, either. It was a thoughtful exploration of human-AI relations. And it had a lot of great action, too.

It looks like Transformers in the water without trying to shoehorn in civilian characters(useless Shia), and perhaps without the excesses of Michael Bay.

Definitely going to see it.

I agree. It had a different take of Asimov's Three Laws, which were sci fi rules he always felt should be shared and reinterpreted.

thanks for sharing.

Watching the Batttleship trailer makes me wish summer was filled with more I, Robots.

So the aliens are actually some underwater-based society that decides to declare war against the surface dwellers?

Well, I personally think it looks cool. No, I'm not expecting a masterpiece, but it should be a fun couple of hours, at least.

So, with the death of the captain, a young Lieutenant finds himself in command of a ship. You don't suppose by the end of the movie he'll actually be promoted to Captain, do you? ;)

... I don't get why this has to be a Battleship "adaptation." Do they REALLY think people wouldn't go see a movie like this if it wasn't based on a friggin' board game? ...

Universal basically has to do this. After the success of "Transformers" they signed a contract with Hasbro to turn their games into movies:

As for the trailer: It looks like dumb fun, so depending on what else is in the cinemas at the same time, I might watch it.

I want to give Peter Berg more credit than Michael Bay, so I am hoping that there's more substance to the film than what this trailer indicates. Don't get me wrong, I can turn off my brain and enjoy the Transformers films just fine. But this trailer definitely makes this look like a generic action flick that desperately wants to be the next Transformers film only without the GM marketing synergy.

Perhaps but I doubt the agreement said they had to spend $200 million on it.

Anyway, I wonder if people would be less/more/equally critical of this trailer if it had a more fitting title, like Crysis: The Movie... (minus the nanosuits).

Ok, after that new trailer, I'm somewhat intrigued beyond my initial interest from the trailer of, "Oh look, Liam Neeson's in it!". I will likely go see it assuming the following trailers keep my interest up.

Maybe they just went with what C. Aird once said:
"If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to serve as a horrible warning." :)

Definitely going to see it.

When a movie has no redeeming qualities from either plot or acting, why wouldn't you want Michael Bay excesses? At least he makes cool looking explosions. You'd be left with nothing otherwise.

I took "the excesses of Michael Bay" to include the sophomoric humor and blatant racism that imbued the Transformers movies, especially the second and third.

I never bothered with the second or third Transformers, but the first certainly had immature humour that went nowhere. "This is a sextant." "Heh heh, you said sex."
