The fans (not all but thousands in the student body) rioted. The fans at this high school tortured this kid because they felt he should stay silent, allow Sandusky to continue abusing kids, rather than speak up because it got Joe Paterno fired. That was all that mattered. No, every fan of Penn State isn't a psychopath, but that these events occurred at all are indicative of an extremely serious problem in the mindset of that community. I don't know that ending the program at PSU for a couple of years would be fair, but I understand the reasoning behind it and I don't completely disagree. In fact, ending the program at this particular university (and allowing players to transfer without penalty, of course) would probably be more fair, or at least therapeutic in a positive manner, than any probation that's been levied at any other institution in the past couple of years. The mindset of this community is warped enough that the idea deserves at least some serious discussion. Once they learn they can live without it, perhaps they can live with it again at some point without covering up and enabling crimes against children so that PSU football can continue unscathed.

No, it's not that broad. If I'd opined that all Penn State fans were like that, it would be too broad. That community has a serious problem if students will riot over a pedophile protecting football coach being fired.
I have several friends who graduated from Penn State who live in California who would like the opportunity to see Penn State play in the Rose Bowl should they win the Big 10 and advance to that game.

I'm sure they didn't. There must be some sane people on that campus. Just not the ones John Stewart skewered on his show in a clip about the rioting on campus and so forth.
Well, we knew this was coming. New allegations were said to involve a relative and his kids are all grown. One of his son's wives is now saying grandpa Jerry molested one of his grandkids.
Accusations about grandchild
In his mind it probably doesn't count as incest since they're not biologically related. Perhaps they were horsing around in the shower. There's some bits in there about another of the non related victims. Sandusky was allowed to take him out of his local school several times a week without parental permission. You don't let someone just take a minor out of school on a near daily basis without telling a parent.
You'd think they'd care about potential litigation if they got into a car accident or something if for no other reason. The mother had a gut feeling something wasn't right, but was encouraged by principal Karen Probst not to report anything. He was the kid who asked his mother "how to look up sex weirdos on the internet." When she asked him what he was talking about, he said "Jerry." The principal said Sandusky was a great guy and discouraged her from reporting anything. Nobody at the school wanted to inform on Sandusky. Cult mindset. He was the "great Jerry" from Penn State and all. Yes, there's a serious, serious problem there. Ick.

Thanks for not flaming the suggestion. In fact, you seem to have caught exactly the logic I was following. This community has a sick enough mentality that the source of the sickness (Paterno and the entirety of the cult) has to be dismantled from top to bottom, and ending that program will teach the entire community a lesson they will never forget. Some of them will come to their senses once they are forced to go through withdrawals and learn how to live "sober."
Letting the students--as long as none of them are guilty of covering up any of Sandusky's behavior--transfer without penalty would make sure they still had a chance to continue playing football if they wished. That wouldn't be bad.
^ I think one of the problem with that is that the same people may take it out even worse on the victims, thinking those are to blame for ending the football program.
You know we have a couple of Penn State grads on this board right? It's not a cult.
It's a cult mentality that's afflicting far too many of those in State College. No, not all. I never said all, but too many. Nerys Ghemor is right. The situation became egregious. This coach and program were practically deified. That's got to stop. Maybe a few years of rest and "living sober" wouldn't be the most horrible thing in the world in a case as egregious as this one.
And if those board members don't happen to fit the cult-member description, then good for them. Problem is, too many do.

And... these games mostly sucked today. Maybe Stanford and Noverrated Dame will be interesting.
I haven't watched American football in YEARS, but tonight I watched the Auburn-Alabama game. It aired on a local station, and the house was empty, so I figured-- hey, why not. Mostly one-sided, though there were two really good touchdowns -- one by Auburn at the start of the second half, immediately following kickoff, and another by Alabama that started from an interception and ended with the Alabama runner diving into the endzone. My parents were both Alabama fans in my youth, and I suppose that is where my sympathy lay.
Part of Auburn's problem is that most of the team is made up of freshmen. I knew it wasn't really going to go well. But hopefully in a year or two they'll be stronger. 
Auburn was Nick Fairley and Cam Newton.
Those two were very important, yes, but I also think that there wasn't a lot of depth on the team--it was mostly seniors, and when they graduated, it gutted the team.
