a question about firefox?

Firefox has been oddly freezing lately. Anyone else have that problem? I had to switch to Chrome because it got really annoying.

I had that problem a lot a couple years ago, which is what motivated my switch to Chrome. I keep Firefox around as a secondary browser, but I've never felt compelled to go back to it.

Plus, I've gotten way too used to having the combined search and address box, and the lack of that feature in other browsers just annoys me.

about firefox...
you must think in russian. must think in russian.

I just wanted to acknowledge that this made me laugh. Great movie. :)

It's probably a corrupted places.sqlite file in your Firefox profile (that's what it was for me). Try this first, and see if that works.

It fixed the problem for me for a couple weeks, but as soon as the update to Firefox 8 came, the problem started again (and the solution didn't work this time), even though that was supposed to fix it.

The add-ons are the only thing that keeps me using Firefox at this point, because it is a colossal pain in the ass dealing with all its problems.

Firefox seems to have adopted that now for me anyway. I used to have the Google search thing in the top left hand corner of the window and about a week ago, it just vanished. My girlfriend still has them separate and as far as I'm aware, we have the same version.

As for Firefox crashing/not responding, that's happened to me recently, but with the latest update, all seems to be stable now.

Yeah, that's it. I didn't even know it was called that way. And being a Linux user, things are usually done differently on my system, hence my very general description.

Hey, a fellow Linux user. :) What distro do you use?

I have PCLinuxOS on my laptop and EasyPeasy based on Ubuntu on my netbook :)

Interesting. Haven't really heard of the latter, so far, but then again, there are so many distros out there. I use regular Ubuntu on my desktop.

I used to think Firefox was the coolest thing ever until Chrome came along. I got tired of Firefox taking 20 minutes to open and then asking me to update all my apps.

My netbook turned out not to be Linux-friendly and this netbook EasyPeasy edition worked for some reason, while nothing else wanted (the keyboard didn't work at all, so it wasn't a small problem).

I use Firefox and enjoy it very much, but I'm stuck at version 5. This is because 1Password, which I also use daily, changed its plugin (for use with FF versions 6 and higher) to one which is a major PITA. So I use FF 5 so as to be able to use 1Password's old plugin.

I had a bit of a fight with my netbook when I installed Ubuntu, but thankfully it was "just" the wireless card, so it was relatively easy to fix. I'm not changing it now, though, that's for sure.

I've never really understood all the extreme love for one browser or another; it really does seem to get quasi-religious in the fervour raised sometimes. I've never really noticed one actually working faster than other, at least to any meaningful degree while browsing.

For me, what I notice the most is where all the buttons are. I had to switch from IE7 to FF3 a while (one year, two, who knows?) back because somehow an install of IE got seriously corrupted and I couldn't fix it, and the first thing I did was skin the browser so it looked like IE7.

I got a new computer a few weeks ago and decided to try both IE9 and FF8. They both worked fine, but I figured I may as well continue with Firefox because I could change around the layout of the buttons a lot to resemble how I used to have FF3 (which itself was close to IE7).

I guess I'm a bit of a stuck-in-the-mud when it comes to how I like things to look, and that outweighs almost any other consideration. As Firefox let me reorganise the look the most, I stuck with it. The only extensions (adblock and Greasemonkey for one specific site aside) I use are those kind of cosmetic ones. I think I must be a very straightforward internet user! :D

It isn't a strong attachment for me. More like "Ah crap, I guess I got to switch operating systems."

BTW, Locutus, while following the instructions in that link, firefox locked up again :D

^ Do you have a specific browser in mind when you say that? I'm not aware of any current browser which is so risky, although Chrome does appear to communicate back to Google a fair amount.

Funny, I had more problems with Chrome crashing, tried it twice and deleted it twice.

I've given Chrome a try a few times and had varying issues with it.

The first time it ran fine after installing it, but after closing down and reopening (or trying to) it said Chrome wasn't installed. I tried it on another machine and it was crash happy:(

Firefox has had it's issues (especially one of the 3. something updates for me) but otherwise has been fine since they've fixed the memory issue and has become my primary browser

Safari just didn't grab me though I've still got it in to try from time to time.

Sorry, man. Were you able to finish doing it later, and if so, did it help?

I don't know how good Chrome is, but choosing a browser is like choosing a car--you want a safe, fast and reliable one.
From my experience, choosing a web browser is more like choosing a brand of gasoline. They're all pretty much the same.

I use Safari at work, Internet Explorer at work, and Chrome for work I do from home (because of a specific Chrome plugin I have to use). I don't really notice any differences between the browsers, besides slightly different button positions they are all the same to me.

It didn't, unfortunately. I might try again later but I have a working browser through Chrome so it isn't a priority. I also might try that folder deleting thing.
