DC Universe Online goes free to play!

^It's possible. Honestly though I think it's more likely they didn't think it was worth spending money on coping with a temporary surge of new players. Better to just ride out the storm and see how things settle after a few weeks.

You might be right about that. Currently, there seems to only be one server per region, per platform, so there isn't much choice for where to play if you're either playing on the PC or PS3.

Kotaku has reported that SOE cites 120,000 new PC players within the first 24 hours after DCUO went F2P, while 1 million players, evenly split between the PC and PS3 platforms, joined over the first week.

I briefly played the game way back when it was in beta, but I unfortunately didn't have much time to spend with it during my testing period. I'm curious to see how the game has evolved since then, but I'm already playing STO and, of course, SWTOR comes out next month.

Ahh, that would definitely account for the long queues! If that keeps up, I hope they look into getting more servers.

I just realized that the game uses the Unreal engine, which accounts for how beautiful it looks :)

My Hero is:

Mentor: Superman
Power: Gadgets
Weapons: Dual Wield

It'll be interesting to see how many of those players stay with the game. I suspect most of them are joining just to see what it's about.

Speaking of that, I did get an email about the TOR stress test, but I had to decline. My computer simply isn't up to specs. Don't have the dual-core needed.

Where does it tell you the PC requirements? I got invited to do the stress test, but I don't know if my computer will be able to handle the game as it's a few years old.

Thanks! Eh, my system's borderline. The RAM is the only iffy part.

I didn't get a download link with my invite, but after a quick check on the forums it seems the download link will be sent soonish.

The stress tests started in September. This will be my 3rd.

First they send an email saying you have been invited. Then later an email notifying which weekend and the download link.

Those were standard betas.

Stress tests have several times the # of people.

Yeah, I had to dig into the site to find the FAQ to find out what should have been some info right on the front page or something. Should be more prominent than that. As for the download, good luck. I once participated in a stress test for another game, and it took me longer to download the game than the test was up for, and in the end I didn't even get into the actual game.

Nope, they were stress tests. The first one started small and with each additional one they have increased the number of players. bioware even said they were stress tests.

The beta weekends have only been about stress testing. They have a pool of beta players on a separate server doing standard beta (and have been for over a year).

Apparently DC Universe's been designed to be cross-platform from the start according to this video where the devs explain that they've been playing on both platforms on one server:

So, it's only a matter of time before it happens, and apparently they're working on making a server like that happen. The only thing stopping them is the business infrastructure. With the PC version, you need an SOE account, with the PS3 version you need a PSN account. They'll have to find some way to allow both to join the same server.

^That video is from before the game even launched. I would not be surprised if they just dropped the idea by now.

Yeah, but even then, it shows that it's possible and that they've been thinking about it and that technical limitations aren't a problem.

Anyway, anyone who's mentor is Superman and playing on the PS3, let's group together to do the Hunt for Grodd.
