DC Universe Online goes free to play!

I had a character I got up to level 26 and took a break. With free to play I decided to come back. I downloaded the latest patch, entered and was stuck in the queue at 4998. The queue got down until about 100 and it errored. I had to try again, this time queued at 5120. Again got to about 100 and died again. Decided to give up.

I read they had server problems and that they were fixed. I tried on Sunday, so that shouldn't have been an issue.

Perhaps if I wasn't f2p I might have gotten in.

Looks like they've ironed out the server bugs, for anyone who was waiting.

We have any legendary members around here that want to start up a league?

One problem there is there are likely people on either the console version or the PC version and I think they use different servers.

Plus there's also the issue of EU and US players being on different servers too.

No, the server issues haven't been fixed, although they do seem to only be a real problem on the US servers. The EU ones are having some issues, but nowhere near as many reports of disconnects, infinite loading screens, or freezes as the US ones.

Well, us Legendary subs are supposed to have priority login over you f2p peasants. :p

Yeah I installed on Friday and have tried several times each day to get in since.

I did get as far as the intro movie yesterday; it just reaffirmed my opinion that Marsters is megabadass. Though I couldn't tell if that was Hamill in Joker form or a sound-a-like.

Playing this a bit more - I think I'm struggling so much with it because I don't understand the mechanics of those sorts of games like the rest of you who play a lot of RPG. For example, I don't understand that you couldn't simply go into the brainaic incursion zone and defeat them as they are simply come back. Also it wasn't clear to me that you don't receive the XP points for completing a mission unless you go into your journal and manually select that it is complete - which seems a bit counter-intuitive to me - I simply thought you'd complete a mission and get the points.

I'm going to give this game a try, I'm downloading it as I type this it's currently at 700mb, which is good for 5 minutes of downloading. Still just under 14gb to go!

your also going to have to go through a rather big patch as well, so its going to take a while.

Well I'm 3gb downloaded and it's been less than 20 minutes... I suppose there are some benefits living next to the city's telephone/internet exchange!

Is it worth playing for free? Or is that just a thing to lure new members in and then they hit you with microtransanctions that are necessary to keep the game progressing and enjoyable past a certain point?

As far as I can tell, the F2P model is far less restrictive than others I've heard of. I think they've been very clear that nothing in the online store affects gameplay, so there shouldn't be anything worth worrying about.

I've been quite enjoying it so far. I'm not overly familiar with MMORPGs having only had a quick go on the STO & Champions Online demos, but this one feel dramatically better. The only thing that lets it down is the character creator. The one on CO was insanely flexible and while the DCUO one is versatile enough, the options don't feel anywhere near as open.

Created two characters so far; a flying, fire based, bow & arrow wielding hero mentored by Wonder Woman and an acrobatic, tech based, duel sword wielding villain mentored by Luthor. The former is I think almost up to lv14 (haven't played in a few days so I forget exactly.)

I do have a little trouble getting to grips with the controls again when coming back to it (using an xbox for windows controller) but for the most part it's pretty intuitive...if only I could remember all the damn combos instead of just button mashing! ;)

Yeah, Champions is the master of flexible character creation.

DCUO has a different approach. You customize you character on the go. You will unlock tons of costume choices while you play with gear.
You can use any costume piece you find and just equip the gear once to use it permanently.

Yeah I'm finding that as I go along and I really like it. Since I noticed my cash was topping out (what the hell is "Escrow" anyway?) I actually bought a bunch of different items, "collected" them and sold them straight back just so I'd have some more style options.

I had initially tried to get as close to this Wonder Woman design I did a while back but so far it's not even close. I'm more happy with my Villain who looks like a cross between this and this. ;)

Well I got halfway through the tutorial and gave up.

I find the whole thing really cumbersome and awkward to play with a keyboard and mouse. It seems like you really need a controller/game pay to play it adequately, which to me seems a bit silly.

But I suppose I'll give it another go.

My graphics card isn't compatible. :( I wanted to play this game some kinda bad. :sigh:

I downloaded Champions Online and played it a little but I am not feeling it. I guess I am so use to WoW it is hard for me to adapt to other MMOs.

Have you tried City of Heroes? Its free to play now also.

I am looking forward of playing DC Universe, though I do need some serious upgrades to my computer before I can even try playing it. The huge download size does have me bit worried though, might take few hours with my connection..

Just got done playing this for the first time on my PS3. It was pretty fun.
Anyone else here play on a PS3?

I'm thinking of trying this on the PS3. My Computer would likely struggle to run it. Seeing as some of the comments seem to indicate clunky keyboard controls and the need for a controller, this seems like the best decision at this point. JD, how did it play? I wonder if this means PC and PS3 players can play together. With all the interest here, we could probably make a guild.

Unfortunately, no.

With all the interest here, we could probably make a guild.

A TrekBBS league would be great, but there doesn't seem to be that many of us in this thread, and we're all divided by platforms, locations, and character morality.

^It does look that way unfortunately.

On a vaguely related note, has anyone else seen this yet? I came across it the other day and being new to MMOs I found it especially amusing.
