DC Universe Online goes free to play!

Oh, that's unfortunate. I was hoping someone had eventually developed an MMO that could transcend platforms.

If I remember correctly Microsoft looked at this last year, they quickly dropped the idea when (in their testing) it becomes clear that the use of a keyboard and mouse gave such an advantage over a joystick that it was a terrible experience for console gamers when faced against PC-based opponents - I think the word 'slaughter' was used.

Hmmm, they probably didn't look far enough then, because it's less an issue now than it used to be in the past, as keyboards can easily be hooked up to a PS3. Heck, I bought one of those rollup rubber keyboards that didn't even say was compatible, but it works quite well. I use it for communicating and sending messages. It also depends on the game. If a game like DC Universe has been developed for both PC and console concurrently to be identical save for the control schemes, then it shouldn't be an issue. A game like an MMO doesn't strike me as a game having those kinds of problems. Racing maybe, but an MMO relies less on one's every move, so then it just becomes a matter of pressing the right buttons at the right time on each control scheme. As others have pointed out, this game also seems more geared towards controllers rather than keyboard. In that case, PC users can grab a controller and use it there too and it becomes a level playing field, if we're taking PVP into consideration. But I'd likely just disable PVP between platforms.

Yeah I can see PC gamers having an unfair advantage with first-person or even third-person shooters, but not with games like DCUO which is designed to be slanted in favour of console controls. Hell the reason I even own an Xbox controller for the PC is because some games work better with it. For some odd reason I even found the new Deus Ex to work better with a controller when you'd think keyboard and mouse would be easier.

Yeah I wish developers would take the "controls" into consideration more.

Like your point about FPS. I cannot, for the life of me, play console FPS. It's like my hands are physically incapable of doing it.

I actually do better playing FPS games on a console (or at least with a gamepad) than I do playing with a mouse and keyboard. Go figure.

Yeah, there have been very few first person MMOs, including the upcoming Dust514 set in the EVE universe, but most of them are usually 3rd-person games, which if done right fit perfectly into the console mindset.

Which is why I wish The Old Republic would come out on consoles. That game seems like a prime opportunity to make transcendence happen. As consoles are more and more like set-top computers, there's less and less an excuse for it not to happen.

I will almost guarantee Bioware releases a XBOX TOR client by summer 2013. If not, it will be a launch title on the next gen XBOX.

Both KOTOR games were on XBOX, and, like you say, the time is right for the migration. Plus, Bioware has always been a frontrunner in migrating PC style games to consoles.

Wow, that was quite a large download. The intro video is quite awesome, I have to say. Though I'm stuck at the Wonder Woman loading screen after having created my character for some reason. Is it supposed to take this long to load? Oh nevermind, I quit and restarted and it seems to work fine now. Though that's quite the queue just to get in and play... 2200?

Anyhow, anyone playing with a PS3 can watch out for SpandexMan :D

^Yeah, the servers are understandably crowded at the moment. When I logged on the EU server earlier on today the lag was just crippling. Not surprising really and one would think it'll sort itself out in a week or so once things have died down.

Unfortunately I had to quit during the tutorial, so hopefully I can restart it or continue where I left off, right after Superman comes in. Or is it whoever your mentor is? Very cool. I love how they bring in the classic characters to make you feel part of something important.

I had WW as my mentor, and I Superman showed up on Brainiac's ship.
The biggest problem I ran into was that when I was picking if I wanted PvP or PvE, it got really jumpy and I accidently picked PvP. So I kept randomly getting attacked by player controled villains and getting killed in like 5 seconds.
Does it matter if you don't log out before you quit?

I think it's likely Ok. The worst that can happen is that it logs you out after being idle for so long, which won't matter much if you're not playing anymore. Which might take from 5 to 10 minutes, depending on how they have things set up. Considering the queue is huge, it's likely 5 minutes. On the other hand, the likely reason why the queue is so high is that people aren't logging out properly. That said, they should probably make the logout more prominent.

The Watchtower has a Phase Shifter, so if you want to switch over to the PvE world you can use it to do so. Means you can level up without worrying about being ganked by higer level players. Then, if you want to shift back into PvP once your character is a bit tougher, you can do that, or stay in PvE.

No.

How do you log out, I couldn't find the option anywhere?
Ok, I have kind of a stupid question, but I've never really done this kind of stuff before. When you quit you're character disappears, right? Or do they just stand around until you log back in?

They go bye bye. The same whether you log out, quit the game, or just freakin' unplug the power cable on your computer.

Err, I actually just answered your second question. To the first, no idea.

I think these long lines to play could have been avoided of little better preparation before actually going F2P( more servers and stuff like that). Or is it actually possible that they did not expect such a big surge of new players:confused:
