The Teaser Intro Was Great, But...

KirksStuntMan

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
IMO, some of TOS episodes started out with an very interesting teaser introduction which promised that top rate acts 1-4 would soon follow. However, the main body of some episodes sometimes turned out to be somewhat disappointing. Which episode meets this criteria for you?

My choice: "I, Mudd". Even when I view this today I am enticed to believe that an excellent ST episode will follow the opening teaser.

However, I was greatly dissatisfied with the absurd story that comprised the rest of Stephen Kandel's script. Ugh!

The new movie felt that way to me, actually. The opening scene, culminate in the elder Kirk's death was awesome, beautiful cinema. As close to art as Star Trek ever gets. Sets up all the characters, the premise, tragic death, cool fx, everything. ...and then, in my opinion, it took a nosedive into schlocky '00s action/sci-fi for the following 2 hours.

I never really watched the teasers much. A few do seem to trump up the episode more than it's worth, but... hey, most teasers do that.

I do agree that the 2009 movie had a great start and then shifted into a more "brute force" action movie. The pace was rushed and certain aspects should have been developed further. It could have been a much better movie than it was, but in any case I still enjoyed it quite a bit. I just hope the action intensity is toned back a bit in the sequel.

I'd say the teaser for "Miri" qualifies. The fact the planet is a duplicate of Earth becomes totally irrelevant soon afterwards, which has always struck me as odd.

Agreed. It should have been:

McCoy: Hey, there's a really bad disease down there.

Kirk: Yeah, fine. THAT PLANET LOOKS EXACLTY LIKE EARTH!

McCoy: Umm....there all gonna die.

Kirk: Yeah, fine. THAT PLANET LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE EARTH! What's up with that, Spock?

Spock: Well....ummm...

Kirk: THAT. PLANET. LOOKS. EXACTLY. LIKE. EARTH!

Spock: You can sedate him, right?

McCoy: Consider it done.

Bob Justman probably thought, "If we make this planet a Class M duplicate of Earth, we can say hundreds of budget dollars by using the old Andy Griffith Mayberry city set that is just down the street!"

^ I know... would've been fun if somebody called out the town name as "Mayberry". And then...

Spock: "Curious... this place is an exact duplicate of a set used on an ancient 20th century television program called The Andy Griffith Show. How is this possible?"
Kirk: "I think I'm having Shore Leave deja-vu."

Agreed. I've always said it was a decent action movie and even good sci fi but bad trek.

Much like TNG and later completely disregarded the Preservers and the idea of the parallel development aka the Period Set and Costume Milking Device. :D

^Well, the script had potential, but when Kirk and crew started acting like morons in order to disable the androids...I lost interest and turned to a rerun of Gilligan's Island on TBS. Skippppperrrrrrr! Coming, Little Buddy!!!!!

The one that immediately comes to mind in this category is "And The Children Shall Lead". A very memorable teaser, with the really chillingly effective image of the children playing "Ring Around the Rosy" amid their parent's dead bodies. It's really an example of a one of the greatest teasers followed by one of the worst episodes.

I think you're referring to the previews for next week's episode. The "teaser" is the "pre-credits" action, the prologue before the main titles. It's "teases" you with a mystery or an intriguing set up so you want to watch the episode. I think the more commonly used term now is "cold open."

Thank you for clarifying that. I used to work in a Hollywood post-production facility, so I mistakenly assumed that everyone knew what a "teaser" was. Sorry about that.:)
