Your Favorite DVD Blind Buys

Some of the more memorable blind buys

Twin Peaks
Firefly
Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett)
Soviet made Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.
Casablanca

I bought the first season of Breaking Bad on Blu-Ray without having seen more than three minutes from the middle of a season two episode. Now I own the first three seasons and am enjoying the hell out of the fourth on TV.

Blind buys, huh?

Firefly
BSG mini-series
Babylon 5 (bought the first season on a whim because it was only $20 at Best Buy)
Avatar: The Last Airbender

Oh crap, yeah! Me too! I totally forgot; I rocketed through the entire first season in one weekend. What a great show.

Count me in as another for Veronica Mars on the blind buy list. Friends had recommended it so I decided to give it a go and ran through the first two seasons fairly quickly. I enjoyed it.

Firefly was one I'd seen one episode of and it didn't impress me too much at the time, but sometime later, the dvd came out so I went ahead and got it. I ended up enjoying it a lot:)

My best blind buys would be....

Adjustment Bureau- One of very, very few movies that grab me right away and actually "invest" me into the movie. I loved it. I actually felt bad for Matt Damon's character and wondered what was going to happen.

The Blind Side- What can I say? As much as I try to be a grumpy asshole, I have a soft spot for feel-good stories. And I like football.

The Book of Eli- Bought it summer 2010, I can't even remember why I bought it. I had no interest in seeing it in theaters and I don't think I was all that interested in seeing it afterwards. But I bought it anyways, and I was pleasantly surprised. The ending really caught me off guard too..... definitely a Sixth Sense type movie- you have to watch it a second time to see what you missed.

Casino Royale- I'm not a James Bond fan. Another movie that I'm not sure why I got it, but I did and I loved it. I think Daniel Craig is a terrific actor and I've really enjoyed his two Bond movies. CR isn't a major action movie, but it's entertaining and interesting.

Battlestar Galactica- Not a complete blind-buy. I watched the miniseries a long, long time ago and it was alright, but not enough to make a big impression on me. But, I kept hearing good things about the series, and one Thanksgiving Break, I was in my college dorms all alone and decided that I needed something to do, so I picked up the first season. Blew through it before the break was over and picked up the second season immediately.

Firefly- One of those shows that I kept hearing so much about, but I never bothered to check it out. Got it and loved it.

Black Dynamite

Black Dynamite: First Lady, I'm sorry I pimp-slapped you into that china cabinet. I used excessive force. Oftentimes, I cross the line, but I try to do so in the name of what's right. Most of the time, the ends justifies the means. But in this case, I feel like I betrayed my own code of ethics. And for that, sugar, I apologize.
Patricia Nixon: But I shot at you. I tried to kill you, Black Dynamite.
Black Dynamite: This is true, but you did not connect. You shot a plate. Had you connected, pimp-slapping you into that china cabinet might have been justified. But I feel I crossed the line. And for that, please accept my apology.
Patricia Nixon: I do. I do, it's just... oh, Black Dynamite, you're so righteous.
Black Dynamite: This is also true. Because whenever there's injustice,
[stands up]
Black Dynamite: wrongs to be...
[Gloria suddenly appears and embraces Black Dynamite]
Gloria: Oh, Black Dynamite!
Patricia Nixon: [Tugging Black Dynamite's pants] Go on, honey.
Black Dynamite: [Pulls out his handgun and points it straight ahead] Because whenever there's injustice, wrongs to be righted,
[as Gloria sits down, holding Black Dynamite's left leg]
Black Dynamite: innocents to be defended, Black Dynamite will be there, delivering ass-whuppings. and I will not hesitate to lay the hammer down on any clown that comes around.
[Pulls out his nunchucks]
Black Dynamite: Because if they wanna fight, they best come see me, because I'm Black Dynamite.
Greatest apology ever.

If I adhere to what I assume is the literal definition of Blind Buy: Purchase of DVD/DVD set having never viewed an episode or seen the movie, then I'd say my options are narrow. I never blind buy a movie, Netflix saves me that experience from ever happening. I could do the same for TV shows I suppose but I've gambled a bit lately.

Literally
Vamprie Dairies: Last Black Friday Target had S1 for $12 and I have two female friends who love it and swore it wasn't Twilight but more Buffy-esque meets True Blood lite. I did enjoy it, it was quite good.

Castle: Again, Target had S1 for $9 back in the Spring and I got it just out of curiosity for Nathan Fillion. I mean, it's on S3 or 4 now so let me check this out. I'm not a procedual show guy but it had a similar vibe to BONES which again I only watched for Boreanaz. Whedon loyalty kids!!

Transformers Headmasters: This is the unofficial 4th season of Transformers after the US only aired a truncated 3 episode 4th season. It is in Japanese and dubbed but I enjoyed it for a number of reasons. Looking foward to the "5th Season" hopefully to come out if sales of this were good enough.

Deadwood: This was a Black Friday price of $6 for S1. I have several friends who adore this show. For $6 I'm going to try it. Not seen one episode. But I'm going to watch it by years end. At least before Black Friday '11 anyway.

Fringe: I actually bought this Spring '10 for $10 at Best Buy thanks to a friends alert on Facebook. I saw the pilot and segments of a few episodes. I should've already watched this but haven't. After I finish Farscape this and Deadwood are next.

Not Literally
Shows I had seen a few eps of up to half a dozen or so but never seen fully and bought and enjoyed/are enjoying.

nuBattlestar Galactica: Saw the first season and a half and lost interest in the long breaks and then crazy half season set prices. Got the whole thing last Black Friday (see a trend yet) for $65 and watched this back in the Spring. Great

Farscape: Also got this, yep last Black Friday for $55 having seen less than a dozen eps back when it aired. I'm currently ready to start the third season.

Tru Calling: Not Black Friday but it was a Dec '10 special. Got the entire series (S2 is only 7eps) for $14/15. I'd only seen 2-3 eps of this and really liked it. Was it ground breaking, no but I can see where the mythology of this show was really developing by mid/end S1. Plus, it had Zach Galifinakas as a primary lead.

My biggest show to watch of which I bought but only see a dozen or so of is Stargate SG*1. I bought this Black Friday as well for what I know was a really good price (otherwise I wouldn't have gotten it) but I can't recall the actual price.
It's an intimidating 10 season monster and until I clear out others that I've let pile up, like Deadwood, Fringe, Voltron and The Batman I'm not going to tackle SG*1.
I will get to it and despite whatever I buy this Black Friday SG*1 will be at the top of the "oldest to view" pile.

Vamprie Dairies: Last Black Friday Target had S1 for $12 and I have two female friends who love it and swore it wasn't Twilight but more Buffy-esque meets True Blood lite. I did enjoy it, it was quite good.

One of my friends has also recommended this and our local supermarket had it for £7. So far I'm only up to episode 6, but it seems ok so far:)

sque meets True Blood lite.

It was also $4.75 a few weeks back at Target, but I missed out on it because I was on vacation. I've been wanting to get it for cheap being that it's a Bones ripoff that hopefully gets better, and not worse like Bones is doing.

Of recent times, Super immediately springs to mind.

I only really looked at the cover and saw it was in a similar vein to Kick-Ass (which I really liked) and had Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page in it. Watching the title sequence alone excited me, Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon, Linda Cardellini, NATHAN FILLION!

Loved it, the last 20 minutes or so are just awesome.
"Shut up, crime!"

Many ... many many many. In fact this is usually how I pick up on new series, is that I'll buy the season one set based on word of mouth. I've been doing this for years.

Some examples: The Sopranos, Firefly, Farscape, Babylon 5, Archer, Twin Peaks, Breaking Bad. Never seen any of these shows till I'd owned at least one season.

Some blind buy movies that worked out: Galaxy Quest, Mulholland Drive, The Big Lebowski

I picked up Freeway, a movie with Reese Witherspoon and Kiefer Sutherland, on a whim several years ago, just because it was mentioned in passing in a book I was reading about the Little Red Riding Hood theme. It's a sick, twisted, hilariously funny movie.

Mostly nowadays I'll stream a series on Netflix before committing to buying the later season DVDs.

Meet Joe Black (technically a blind rental)
Unusually deliberate (characters will sometimes pause before responding to a previous line) but I loved almost every second of it. Acting, dialogue, production design, cinematography - nearly everything about this movie is fantastic (though it includes one of the most seemingly pointless sex scenes I've ever seen).
Thirty Day Princess
We watched this just after the "Great Recession" really took hold; I've been a Sylvia Sidney fan ever since.
Manhattan Meldodrama
A fantastic melodrama; slow to start, but excellent. Clark Gable is amazing in this.
The Great Ziegfeld
Worth watching for the astoundingly staged Follies sequences alone; I couldn't believe the scale of the production.
Love Crazy
A very cute romantic comedy that's expertly constructed and more expertly played by Loy, Powell, and the sadly overlooked Gail Patrick.
I Love You Again
Fun movie carried by the skill of its stars. The premise is a little odd, but it's almost entirely fun.
Wings in the Dark
A surprisingly interesting drama; Cary Grant is good as the clever but blind pilot, but Myrna Loy is better as the fellow pilot who would give anything to keep him from disappointment.
Singin' in the Rain
Somehow, I'd only seen brief clips of the famous dance scene in this, but the whole movie is good. Debbie Reynolds and Gene Kelly simultaneously steal the show despite already being the putative stars. My favorite scene is the last.
Khabi Khushi Kabhie Gham
A great Bollywood movie about the importance of family, the irrelevance of class, and the pointlessness of pride. If you've seen the movie, you know why this scene is amazing. The title song is also great (if you like Bollywood dance scenes). Everyone should see this movie.
The Mark of Zorro
Probably still the best Zorro movie yet made, if neither the most fun (Zorro, the Gay Blade) nor the most exciting (The Mask of Zorro).
They Died with Their Boots On
A great, hugely entertaining movie, whether you like Custer or not. (My mother despises him more than almost any other historical figure, but she loved the film.) The strangest part of the movie is that some of the unlikeliest parts are those that are closest to the truth (the promotion sequence is nearly verbatim from Custer's memoirs, and the key counterattack near Gettysburg took place almost exactly as depicted). Wildly inaccurate in parts, but a very effective adaptation distillation of the accepted history at the time. Casting Sidney Greenstreet as Winfield Scott was inspired.
Elizabeth and Essex
Elizabeth I seems to bring out the best in every actress; Bette Davis is no exception. She and Errol Flynn are excellent in a film that's every better-written as it goes on.
Captain Blood and The Sea Hawk
I can barely separate these movies in my memory, but both are very well-made 1930s adventure films. (I think Captain Blood might have been better; its ending in particular is especially good.) To say that one is like the other is much more a compliment than a criticism, but they do blur together somewhat unfortunately.

They weren't entirely blind buys (I'd seen the films many times, but never in color), but the recently colorized versions of Holiday Inn and My Man Godfrey are astonishingly good. The color breathes new (and sometimes different) life into already excellent films. An unusual amount of care was put into these versions; the director of My Man Godfrey assisted the colorizing process for his film, and, IIRC, the wardrobe artist for Holiday Inn provided important color reference (the actual colors of some costumes in both films are occasionally very surprising). Both colorizations are definitely worth seeing.

I bought the first season of Roswell based on enjoying the book series as a middle-schooler. I knew it would be completely different, and I didn't know if I'd like the changes.

A few weeks later I bought seasons 2 and 3.

All of my HBO stuff is blind-bought because I don't get HBO. I haven't sprung for any of the series, but I have quite a few of their TV movies, including RKO 281, The Gathering Storm, Angels in America, and Warm Springs.

I'd have to say my favorite blind-buy, though, is Love Actually. I wanted to see it in the movie theater, but never got around to it, and bought it when it came out purely on the strength of the director and cast. I'm glad I did, because it's one of my all-time favorite movies.
