Your Favorite DVD Blind Buys

I was thinking about all the TV shows I bought on DVD for cheap that I have never even seen before buying them, but I ended up loving them anyways.

I just finished up the second season of Damages after buying a combo pack of the first two seasons at Target for like $17. The second season wasn't all that great, it seemed to just wonder around, like they had enough plot for 5-6 episodes but made it fit over 13. The first season was spectacular! I loved it, I watched most of the season over just a few nights.

I bought Wonderfalls on DVD for $20 years ago because I heard such amazing things about it. It's one of my favorite shows ever.

Breaking Bad season 1 was $10 at Target and heard great things, bought it, finished it in a day and now I have seasons 2 and 3 coming in from Best Buy.

I bought Farscape because my best friend loved it, and now I do too. Another friend said I needed to watch Six Feet Under, so I bought that and both are now among my favorite shows.

Anyone else have any movies or TV they discovered on DVD and went "why haven't I watched this sooner?!"?

Firefly was a major blind buy for me as I had never seen it at all on TV and, iirc, only saw few mentions of it on here when it first got released on DVD. After I did watch it on DVD I was a bit confused as to what the year was supposed to be as the DVD release didn't have the Sci-Fi intro at the start mentioning the year that I had heard about later on.

Firefly - I bought the show after finishing up Buffy on DVD. I think the movie Serenity coming out in theaters may have had something to do with me picking the DVDs up.

Wonderfalls - I literally bought this because I liked the cover art and was happily surprised to see that it was really a good show.

Six Feet Under - I bought it because I heard good things.

Dexter - The premise of the DVD caught my eye and had the guy from Six Feet Under, so I gave it a shot and watched it for several season until John Lithgow's season finally.

Doctor Who - I have no clue why I bought Eccletson's season, but I loved it and have become an avid fan of 9, 10, and 11.

Torchwood - It had something to do with Doctor Who.

"Star Wars: The Clone Wars". Not 100% blind, as I'd rented the first disc of the first season from Netflix, but just watching the first handful of episodes was enough for me to purchase the rest of the season instead of rent them, and then purchase the second season when that was available.

Similarly, I'd only seen a couple episodes of "Supernatural" and saw that the first season was on sale for something like $15 and picked it up on a lark.

And now there's two shows that I pretty much just watch on DVD.

I don't buy a whole lot blind - mostly I watch things I'm curious about on Netflix until it hooks me enough or I get impatient enough to buy it. Here are the exceptions:

The Vampire Diaries - Amazon had one of its sale thingies, so it was about $12. I had heard enough positive things about it that I went for it. It's a fun show; I enjoy it.

Battlestar Galactica - I bought S1-2 having only seen a youtube fan made trailer. I briefly panicked when it started with a 4 hour opening episode (I didn't know about the miniseries), but that one turned out fine. I watched most of S3 and all of S4 live.

Sherlock - I got it b/c Steven Moffat wrote it.

My parents blind-bought The Wire after reading a review before the 5th season aired.

The closest thing to a blind DVD buy for me was The Downfallen, based on all the Hitler goes nuts spoofs I had seen.

Technically I had never seen Metropolis before buying the blu-ray, but I knew what it was about.

Kate & Leopold Can't remember the reasoning why, but Hugh Jackman in jodhpurs might have had something to do with it. Anyhoo it turns out to be a movie about a guy (played by Liev Schrieber) who's a science geek and discovers a portal under whatever bridge it is in NYC, which lets him travel back and forth in time.

Not exactly a "buy", I found a Family Guy DVD on a shelf in the house when I moved in, watched it cos hey free DVD! Laughed myself sick at it, started watching the show on TV.

Black Dynamite

Black Dynamite: First Lady, I'm sorry I pimp-slapped you into that china cabinet. I used excessive force. Oftentimes, I cross the line, but I try to do so in the name of what's right. Most of the time, the ends justifies the means. But in this case, I feel like I betrayed my own code of ethics. And for that, sugar, I apologize.
Patricia Nixon: But I shot at you. I tried to kill you, Black Dynamite.
Black Dynamite: This is true, but you did not connect. You shot a plate. Had you connected, pimp-slapping you into that china cabinet might have been justified. But I feel I crossed the line. And for that, please accept my apology.
Patricia Nixon: I do. I do, it's just... oh, Black Dynamite, you're so righteous.
Black Dynamite: This is also true. Because whenever there's injustice,
[stands up]
Black Dynamite: wrongs to be...
[Gloria suddenly appears and embraces Black Dynamite]
Gloria: Oh, Black Dynamite!
Patricia Nixon: [Tugging Black Dynamite's pants] Go on, honey.
Black Dynamite: [Pulls out his handgun and points it straight ahead] Because whenever there's injustice, wrongs to be righted,
[as Gloria sits down, holding Black Dynamite's left leg]
Black Dynamite: innocents to be defended, Black Dynamite will be there, delivering ass-whuppings. and I will not hesitate to lay the hammer down on any clown that comes around.
[Pulls out his nunchucks]
Black Dynamite: Because if they wanna fight, they best come see me, because I'm Black Dynamite.

I've blind bought many times and usually I've enjoyed the shows. Some of my best blind buys have been Firefly, Babylon 5, Wonderfalls, Spectacular Spider-Man, Justice League/Justice League Unlimited/Superman TAS (though I had seen Batman:TAS when I was a kid so I figured they would be of the same high quality), Band of Brothers, The Sopranos, and Buffy/Angel.

Edit: Also forgot about True Blood and Mad Men.

Second Edit: Also Veronica Mars and Farscape.

As far as TV shows, my favourite blind buys have been (in no particular order):

24
Prison Break
The Shield
The Wire
Homicide: Life On The Street
Stargate SG-1
Babylon 5
Curb Your Enthusiasm
