How many Andromeda seasons are worth watching?

Why would anyone wanna watch that shit?

I didn't make it thru the first episode. Tho I hear that Keith Hamilton Cobb was very good.

The premise was interesting. It probably would have helped if they 1) hadn't cast Kevin Sorbo as the lead and 2) used the salary they weren't paying him to beef up the production budget from high school drama club level.

Didn't make it past episode three back when it first aired. Thought it was very silly.

Been meaning to give this a second shot, but the first two seasons aren't available on DVD. So, to heck with it.

Its probably better then Voayager so i give it a shot.

Makes Voyager look like Babylon 5.

In contrast to Andromeda, I got thru VOY's premiere ep just fine. In fact, I thought it showed a lot of promise. Then the series settled into a disappointing level of mediocrity that wasn't nearly bad enough to render it entirely unwatchable.

The lead character didn't make me want to throw my TV out the window (generally speaking :rommie:). The acting and production values were very good. The writing was unambitious but competent at the level of craft. I never got the sense that I was watching anything but professionally produced TV.

Yeah, basically that. In fact during my current rewatch I'm teaching myself to temper expectations and generally enjoying the series. I can't fathom feeling similarly regarding Andromeda even if I were flat-out drunk.

Major agreement on the lead character, by the way. Mulgrew's Janeway wasn't the greatest fictional character to come out of the last decade of the 20th Century or anything but she was no... uhh... whatever Sorbo's character's name was. :p

Sorbo was actually very good when he had a strong script and strong director to bring out the best in him. Unfortunately, he's the kind of actor who tends to get too self-indulgent when there's nobody keeping him in check, and that's the direction things went in the later seasons. But then, nobody seems to be recommending the later seasons, so it's kind of a moot point.

I caught the show when it was on, and while it was never all that during S1, I have to admit the finale caught my attention. S2 basically went the same way, but the stupidity level went up a couple of notches and the finale was, I seem to recall, almost incomprehensible. IIRC, after that the entire plot of the series just seemed to disintegrate, and I had problems even finding the show on tv because I think they were switching dates/times, and by the time I caught it...

Well, imagine going from S2 DS9 to S6 DS9, but with a lot less story coherence.

I'd still like to know how the overall story actually went.

I personally think there are good episodes throughout the 5 seasons. I would suggest trying the first season and see if you like it.

IMO, the 5th season works much better on DVD.

The first 4 are worth watching IMO, all very good.

The 5th is not good, BUT, if you chose to watch it, it isn't the worse thing I've ever seen on television. For that, I'd have to defer to Earth Final Conflicts last season.

Unlike the lot of you, I found Andromeda to be a very good series, and I enjoyed it. I've gone back and watched it several times, currently I think i'm in my 4th viewing of watching it all the way through. It's camp, but it's still fun, and there is a lot I like about it. Not the best series in the world, but its entertaining, I do recommend it.

Add me to the list of those recommending Seasons 1 and 2. Season 3 is shaky, but if you really like the first two, I guess I can recommend that one, though S3 starts going off the rails in its opener. S4 was a big waste from what I recall and S5 I gave up on.

The 4th Season of Andromeda, like the 4th Season of Earth Final COnflict, seemed to TRY to get back up to the level of Season 1 (quality as well as storywise). I was REALLY hoping the 5th seasons would have recovered. Instead, both dropped incredibly in cheapness & story quality -- like they were brand new shows.

Sadly, just the first two. Some will tell you it starts to suck about halfway through Season Two, though.

The first 1.5 seasons. After that the main writer was fired and it went to seed.

Every episode up to 2x12 "Ouroboros" or maybe the episode before that.

Seeing a pattern :vulcan: I would add in pick out the episodes which move forward the Tyr Anasazi of Kodiak Pride, out of Victoria by Barbarossa story arc.

IIRC, after that the entire plot of the series just seemed to disintegrate

Not just seemed to. With Robert Hewitt Wolfe no longer there to continue the story arc he intended to tell, it essentially did disintegrate and got replaced by new versions that went in all sorts of directions.

Part of the problem, so it seemed to me at the time, was an overreliance on audience feedback. As a rule, the people who have complaints about a show's direction will be more vocal than those who approve of it, so there was something of a cycle: first there were complaints about the story arc getting too involved, so Tribune fired the guy behind it and dropped it completely, and then there were complaints about it being too episodic so they tried to bring in a new makeshift story arc, and back and forth like that. It shows the perils of a show being shaped by committee or by popular vote rather than by a clear creative vision.

I'd still like to know how the overall story actually went.

There be spoilers here, but here's basically how RHW's story was supposed to go:

Well...that was pretty heady stuff. Thanks Christopher.

Though I must admit my original question was in reference to where the show actually went, since I seem to recall reading stuff about Dylan et al. becoming outlaws within the Commonwealth and other stuff that just seemed rather nonsensical.

To answer the OP, when Trance changes color it is time to turn off the show.

There are a few episodes after that which are decent, but not enough to warrant watching through all the dross.

Andromeda is better in the Original German ;-)

No, really! When they dubbed in in German, they appear to have thrown out the script and made up their own story to go with what was on the screen. And the German writers were much better! Not only that, the voice actors were much better than the people who played their bodies in English, and the foley artist and the sound mixers. . . . . The English language version in much inferior.

I pretty much agree with what Chris said in his first post. First season and a half are solid with some excellence IMO (I'll put the S1 finale up against some others), but after Trance changes color things fall apart. But the ZackAsh eps are still worth checking out.

Some of the characters I really really liked.
