It means "thundering iguana" in Italian. Kind of a nonsensical joke that went out of hand.

True to my namesake, I'm too lazy to retype the whole tale, so:

It all started with a cheap necklace I bought from a street vendor many years ago. It was one of those lame pseudo-tribal things (not unlike this one), but it looked cool and I liked it. The one I had was shaped sort of like a lizard.

Much to my chagrin, people started to inquire constantly about the meaning of it, as if it was a secret symbol or something. So I conjured the tale of the mighty and wise Thundering Iguana, god of lizards, whose long, powerful tail whipped against the mountains and caused the unexplained thunders you hear sometimes on cloudless summer days.

I loved the sheer silliness of it: the lazy, peaceful iguana shrouded in mysterious and vaguely Wagnerian overtones. I always told it with a straight face: most people laughed at it, but some were genuinely intrigued by it, as if it was some sort of ancient cult. With time, it got out of hand, and my friends started to jokingly invoke the blessing of the Thundering Iguana whenever something bad happened to them. Somehow, it stuck even when I stopped wearing the necklace (I still have it in a drawer, tho), so when I needed an anonymous handle for the forum, it was the first thing that sprang to my mind.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Well, the Nasat is an alien race from the current line of Trek books. I wanted something Trek-based, this being the Trek BBS, and I originally joined for the literature forum.

I tend to read it as “Nadsat,” the term for the half-Russian jargon spoken by Alex and his droogs in A Clockwork Orange.

Bog as my witness, I'd never noticed the similarity. Although the implied random violence of the axe-wielding Nasat is a pleasing fit.

I've had to stop myself from misreading it that way too.
