Your User Name Sucks!

My username rocks. :mallory:

It all started back in the halcyon days of 1993, when the hospital I was working at closed and the president let me take my office computer home with me. This allowed me to sign on to the Internet for the first time. I joined AOL and they asked me to create a username. I tried "BabyDriver" and something else that I forget and both were taken. So I tried "Diogenes." Taken. The system offered to give me Diogenes with a string of random numbers attached, but that was too generic for me, so instead I added my first and middle initials at the beginning. Little did I know that eighteen years later I would still be using it, in multiple locations, and that it would be Copyrighted and be the name of my business. :rommie:

It's a nickname which I had at the time, though I hate it now.

I added the 22 (my footy number at the time; again something which has no relevance now) because there was already an account by the same name.

My user name is my name with what used to be my sign in number at a job I left in 2005.

The Corporal Captain.

Well, for those who don't know, it's a made-up rank that Hawkeye gives Radar in the M*A*S*H episode Welcome to Korea, by pinning his captain's bars on Radar's enlisted man's uniform, in order to get Corporal O'Reilly into an officer's club.

Now here's where it gets geeky.

It's a fake rank, see? And it's obviously fake. An enlisted man impersonates an officer in a ludicrous way.

So, with all the Starfleet Captains and Admirals floating around here, what could be more appropriate than a rank of someone pretending to be an officer? :)

Mine really does suck, I can't even remember where the damn thing came from or why, I want to change it but have no idea what to change it to.

It's my nickname in real life given to me by my swimming coach back when I was in Year 2. I didn't register with it and a few years back checked to see if it was active, it wasn't so I took it up. Rarely do I get to it first. I can only think of one other forum I regularly visit that I've been able to use this as my username, though at one or two places I have it as a screen name.

I was in that situation with my old username.

I don't remember exactly how I hit upon this one, but I always thought it was a cool-sounding name, and liked its associations. Plus, I'm a big & tall man, whose real-life first name is David, so it seemed an appropriate name for my internet alter-ego.

I used to have a bunch of usernames, and first started using this one while gaming. But I've gradually been eliminating all but this one.

It's my nickname in real life. I wish I had a more interesting story to tell, because I'm enjoying reading other people's stories.

My username, the coolest one in TrekBBS history, comes from the Rush song The Body Electric.

It's so cool in fact, that my username has a nickname: everyone calls me Digits.

:techman:

I wanted my username to reflect something about me when I joined my first message board in 2006, so what better than something that referenced where I lived, ergo "SacValleyDweller" was coined, Sac short for Sacramento. I used this name everywhere.

That name was one character too long for these boards, so came the pseudonym "SacmtoValleyMan". Wasnt too keen on it some months after the fact.

At the other boards that I registered my usual name to, some shortened my name to SVD. I came to like that, since it would fit if I should move from the Sacramento Valley.

Opportunity came to change my name here, ergo I am SVD now.

Well, the Nasat is an alien race from the current line of Trek books. I wanted something Trek-based, this being the Trek BBS, and I originally joined for the literature forum. Because I'm big on continuity between the books, I created a "character" who frothed with incoherent, murderous anger when that continuity was violated; basically some exaggerated (and not genuinely experienced!) nerd-rage. Because the Nasat are peaceful, cautious and probably the least potentially murderous race in Trek lit, I thought it amusing to choose them. Hence, "Deranged Nasat" (this explains why my avatar is often carrying a weapon).

Also, and as I suppose most of our regulars know, I am a bit of a "deranged Nasat" in reality - like the Nasat, I tend towards long periods of cautious, peaceable behaviour, but it's punctuated by occasional, no doubt very confusing meltdowns, after which I roll into a protective ball before meekly coming back and resuming the status quo. I have two states, basically - "non-aggressive" (the majority) and out-of-the-blue "tranquilize him now!" moments. So the character's actually far closer to my reality than I might like. So I guess it's self-acknowledging and self-deprecating on several levels.

It also demonstrates my fondness for taking incompatible or strangely-at-odds characters, situations and qualities and sticking them together. Psychotic versions of normally friendly creatures seems a particular favourite. :)

It's from an old email address of mine that I ended up really liking. I wasn't sure of what to come up with, so I went with something hobby related and Star Trek related. "archery" because I used to shoot lots of traditional archery before that silly stuff called work and school took up all my time, and "1701" for my Star Trek reference. From that, archeryguy1701 was born.

if anyone doesn't know who Mackenzie Calhoun is, and can't be assed to google him, the short verison is: the captain of the USS Excalibur in the New Frontier novel series. NF is the first non-TV based novel series Pocket produced and also the most popular. Calhoun is a former teenage barabarian warlord who went to Starfleet Academy after defeating the alien overlords on his backward planet. he's completely bad ass and can deck people with one punch. often so fast people have literally blinked and missed it.

I chose my current name partly because I like Star Wars (more than Trek, sorry :p) and partly because my original name was very lame and generic, with just my name and a couple of numbers attached to it. I thought switching to my current name would help make me stand out a bit more.

I think I told this before, but Kai is my actual first name, and when I was in Elementary School, the other kids used to nickname me "Der Weiße Hai", which is both the German term for a Big White and the German title of "Jaws". They chose it basically just because it rhymed with Kai. And it annoyed the hell out of me. So, when I graduated from Elementary, I decided to choose my next nickname for myself, and sticking with the rhyming, and because I love Bond movies (and other spy-fi) I chose "the spy". Ever since, I use Kai "the spy" as my handle on most message boards.
