To me they mean a deliberate descent of a deity from heaven to earth, a divine being made flesh. But I'm not a practising Hindu, so my understanding of the concept might be incomplete or even fallacious.

I got hooked on Green Lantern 20 years ago. Back then, Hal Jordan was the main GL (this was before he went crazy). Over the past few years, I've had several different Hal Jordan GL avatars.
I am definitely not Hal Jordan. That's why I like the character so much. I've never believed the "the alter-ego needs to be nerdy/geeky/wimpy so the fans relate" idea in comics. To me, I don't want to read about someone pretending to be more like me in order to protect their secret identity. In a lot of ways, Hal is the opposite of how I am, which makes reading about him so enjoyable. I don't want to read about a character I relate to, in order to escape reality!

I've been changing my av recently from Kaylee. I know several people liked that av but I just felt like a change. My current one is from Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog. I'm not crazy obsessed with it, but I do like some of the songs from it quite a bit. And I've been in kind of a sappy/lovey phase lately.

Well, Goofy Grape is happy and silly and a relic of the 60s-- so I guess he represents me well. 
Its the new My Little Pony series, we all seem to have chosen a Rainbow Dash avatar at the same time though
Represents the next movie which I plan on seeing, and got plans to watch all previous films (except 2001 version) before it's released here on Thursday. It was Dead before.
My avatar would be hot and nasty in the sack; you can see it in her eyes...
Especially since she has magic powers.
None of that Bewitched "oh no you can't use your powers, Samantha" bullshit here.

I never used avatars for years on any board I was on. Here was the first time. I can't remember why I started or what my first one was. It might have been Kat Dennings. Now I just like to constantly change them with whatever hits my mood. Sometimes to repulse, sometimes to arouse, sometimes to weep. Or ideally all three at once.
