These last ten or so years I've dropped a lot of money into DVD, it feels like I'm wasting all that money by upgrading. But you guys are right, DVD is on it's way out, I got to updgrade soon or I'm going to get left behind.

I think you guys convinced me, that is going to be my next major purchse.

Buying a Blu-ray player and Blu-ray discs from here on out isn't wasting the money you spent on DVDs. You can still watch them, and on your Blu-ray player too.

I bought up a bunch of HD-DVDs for dirt cheap after they lost the HD format war. A friend of mine asked me what I was gonna do with all of those movies, and I told him these discs didn't suddenly stop working because the format war ended.

The DVDs will look as good as they possibly can on the Blu-Ray player. Although some of the older ones will be sort of rough looking, but that only covers the DVDs made when the format was new.

    I don't know about that, doesn't WB put out bare-bones rental Blu-Ray's?

Jeez, this isn't like the transition from VHS to DVD. Your old DVDs will work fine in a BD player. People whining about this really need to get a grip.

I agree that it sucks that some things aren't being released to DVD anymore, but that's really the call of the studios.

I don't have a BD player or even a TV that would make it worthwhile. Still, I don't gripe about some things not being available on DVD. If they don't want my money, then they just don't get it.

Why? It's not like the DVDs will suddenly stop working. They'll probably end up looking better.

As for the BD/DVD combo thing...who cares? You basically get the DVD for free.

Some people also act like we live in an age where it's so hard to sell things you don't want.

Buy a bundle and get something you already have? Sell it on eBay or Craigslist or something. I do that when I end up with dupes of video games and stuff. There is really no excuse for complaining about such things in this day and age. People really do have a warped sense of entitlement, especially when it comes to entertainment.

I think another purpose behind the combo packs (especially for kids stuff) is to provide a copy that can be played in the minivan player, or a portable player, etc.

So yeah, if you end up with a DVD you don't want, throw it on Ebay for a couple bucks.

It can be argued that everything we do beyond eating and breeding is frivolous, and venting on the internet about picking at our interests ranks way up there. Nevertheless, we thrive in a variety of ways.

There's good old-fashioned bickering that's pretty unnecessary in my opinion, and 005 gets the infraction for taking it to the extreme.

Indeed; I often get the combo pack so that I can watch the blu-ray on my TV, and the DVD on my laptop or at my parents' house.

Ironically, what kept me away from Blu-ray initially was the fact so many releases were lacking the special features of the DVD. For example, Resident Evil: Apocalypse was missing the gag reel. And they're still screwing some people over: the recent Blu-ray of Brazil is useless because it's missing all the special features Criterion put in its 3-disc edition a few years ago.

But nonetheless, this is part of the transition. I figure by year's end we will begin to see Blu-ray exclusive releases. The thing is Blu-ray players are so cheap now that it's not a huge deal to change up, and the players are backwards compatible, so this isn't a vinyl to CD scenario. I wasn't a fan of Blu-ray either, I still don't really see much difference even on an HD plasma, but I saw the writing on the wall and moved up last year and I'm glad I did as a number of releases I would have missed out on, such as the Harry Potter Ultimate Editions, would have passed me by.

Though I still have purchased the DVD over Blu-ray on a couple of occasions where the price difference was just too crazy or, once again, the DVD had bonus features the Blu-ray lacked. I'd been looking forward to Brazil on Blu-ray, but I won't be buying it unless another edition comes out with the alternate versions, etc.

I am getting a bit annoyed at having to pay extra for the combo packs. Not that I don't support the idea of including a DVD with the Blu-ray - very smart idea that will save people a ton of money in the long run when they upgrade; I even don't mind if a Blu-ray 3-D disc is included, though I'll never watch it. But having yet another disc with a Digital Copy that'll expire in a year is just e-waste as far as I'm concerned. I'd rather they just have a card with a PIN or something and let people who really want them download them.

That's because it wasn't a Criterion release. Like what happened with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, it's likely that a Criterion Blu-Ray re-release will come about a year later after Universal's bare bones version.

I heard that if you pull your face away from a computer/TV screen, everything's in 3D.

Was at Best Buy today pricing Bluray players. Saw some in the 200 dollar range, also saw a small one for 80 dollars (it was on sale though, normal price appeared to be 110).

What exactly can the more expensive models do that the cheaper ones cannot?

If your willing to spend $200 bucks on one, get a Playstation 3. For the price, it's the best Blu-ray player on the market and a pretty damn good gaming console to boot. I also find that the better / more expensive the player, the faster it loads the discs and the less prone it is to "problems".
