Torchwood: Miracle Day episode one "The New World"

The Wales stuff seems like it would have more appeal in the UK. I'll wait until the UK fans get to join in, but it seems tailored to English people mocking the Welsh (since Americans generally don't think about Wales much at all). I'd think they'd leave that in. Plus, it was a nice bit of humor (actually, it starts with the guy leaving the hospital. It was good for a chuckle, although it was weird it's simultaneously happening with serious dialog).

As for not featuring the title. I think as long as the writing of the episode itself is about the same, the more production-oriented stuff can move closer to American in tone. Just imho, but those seem like minor concessions to those funding the show.

I've been to wales and it's nice so I dont't understand the english picking on them either way it's nice to see a different part of england other than london. and is'nt king arthur from wales?

I enjoyed it. Great to see Captain Jack and Gwen again, of course. The new American characters will take a bit to get to know, though, I think.

Incidentally, during the "autopsy" scene, did anyone else vaguely expect to see John Noble walk in, chewing on a piece of licorice and muttering "Extraordinary!"?

Pretty good. The autopsy was damned creepy. Maybe total cremation is the only way? And if not, what would THAT mean?! :wtf:

Cap'n Jack's looking a bit rough around the edges. I'm wondering how this will ties with the Face of Boe mythology. Also, I think we are meant to draw something from the girl Jack rescued being injured in the same way as him. Not sure what it is yet though.

And really like the new theme, the spooky echoes of the original one.

The UK and US episodes are identical according to people who've seen press screenings. The Wales joke is one that's often made, Welsh saying Wales is God's own country and you have to pay to get in, the English saying there's no toll to get out because it'd take too long to leave.

Pretty sure it was just to show that Jack got injured like a regular human, the girl. They both fell into the same fountain from the same height, so Jack was just as injured as she was.

It's nice to see that they are everything that Sarah Jane was "concerned" about, but if they kit up for war, I really expect they to be using alien hardwar or reverse engineered alien hardware.

You know that minigun Arnie used in the Predator: Imagine if instead of gun barrels firing bullets, that they were dalek blasters.

Something gravity based.

Or they used a resurrection gauntlet to make a whale skeleton dig up from a hundred feet down and bit the chopper in half...

Now what would have been really Warner Brothers would have been if Gwen and the chopper gunman where shooting off each others bazooka volleys, round after round as they each try to reload faster than the other, like When Green Arrow fights Hawkeye.

One word.

Cyberking.

I didn't get the bridge thing entirely, although I did enjoy the guy's ongoing consternation at paying it, as though it were almost as bad as getting shot.

But was his reaction mocking the Welsh, or maybe Brits as a whole? I understand the in-joke between the English and the Welsh, but the Clifton Suspension bridge isn't the only way into Wales, nor is it the only toll bridge in the UK, there are quite a few of them. The Tamar bridge into Cornwall is a one-way-fee toll bridge too. Also, a quick wiki search reveals that the US has numerous toll bridges too, i've been over a very famous one in San Francisco myself, so I am not sure what they were getting at with the way he reacted.

I agree it was clunky, but Children of Earth is the only series that wasn't clunky.

No. If he existed, which he didn't, then the legend has him from all over the place. But Cornwall is considered the most popular legend.

And Wales is NOT a different part of England.

To be fair the bridge joke is one I've heard being made here anyway. As I said usually Welsh saying Wales is so good you have to pay to get in, English saying you don't want slowing down on your way out...

Personally I felt it could have been great, but there seems to be a clash in there between the American style and the British style that makes it not quite right.

^ Yes, I understand the in-joke, but I don't understand why the American would be upset about paying for the bridge. It's not a concept that is unheard of in the USA.

Probably just pissed off "Been shot, had some jerk on the plane take my phone, landed hundreds of miles away from where I'm going and I have to pay for this stupid bridge."

His plane landed in the wrong country.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, but he wouldn't have had to pay to get into Wales if some fucker hadn't just put him on a plane to Wales even if it added six hours to the journey.

(I don't think he understood that Wales was a a country and not a suburb until just that moment we saw him ranting on his cellphone.)

Maybe he's just gephyrophobic?

Didn't mind it. The moment where Gwen was firing her gun at the chopper whilst holding her baby was brilliant. The reunion with Jack was good, though they didn't get to catch up properly.

Looking forward to next week.

The Clifton Suspension Bridge doesn't go into Wales and I'm sure it's not a toll bridge. You're thinking of the Severn Bridge. :p

Oh yeah, you're right.

It is a toll bridge, but I was thinking of Severn, you are right. Hey, they're both near Bristol though

I wondered for a moment if he didn't have GDP and that would be the point, but it didn't come up. It could also have just been a suggestion of lack of geographical knowledge (why is Wales so separate from England?). Or it could be they needed someone not from the area to express the jokes even if it wasn't entirely logical for an American to say them.

I guess you mean GBP as in £ not GDP?
Wales isn't actually separate from England, it's just the main motorway in to Wales crosses the Severn in to Wales. There are plenty of other ways in to Wales, just the quickest route from London would go that way.

I didn't mind it for the most part. The only thing that got on my nerves was Mekhi Phifer's horrible acting. Especially when he was leaving the hospital and flying to England. It was absolutely terrible.

If someone would take a magic eraser and just scribble him out of the show, it'd be pretty good. Until then, I don't know if I'll be able to watch it if he keeps acting like that.

I enjoyed it for the most part. I didn't like Bill Pullman's character at all (and I guess that's the point), but I felt his scenes brought the flow of things to a grinding halt. Everytime he came on screen I kept wanting it to end so we could get back to the exciting mystery & Torchwood stuff. Looks like his arc will be expanding though from what we saw in the series trailer at the end. Looking forward to next week!
