Torchwood: Miracle Day episode one "The New World"

Erm SPOILERS?

Never thought I'd say it but when I started reading through this thread I had no idea anyone had actually seen it! Where's the Spoiler Warning?

Well ... it is a thread about the first episode.

Yes, but you'll notice that all of the Dr Who episodes have pinned and Spoiler warned review threads with polls. I thought this was just another thread containing idle speculation when I absent mindedly began to read.

Whats the broadcast date for Blighty?

You might want to check the thread marked "Premiere Date" rather than the "Episode One" thread.

timothy did say in his original post that this is a discussion thread for the first episode.

For the sake of argument...

"- Second, if your thread contains or is likely to contain spoilers, please indicate that in the title, so folks looking to avoid spoilers can, well, avoid them."

I haven't read anything that would spoil the episode for me though. Just saying is all.

Just finished watchin' it, and aside from the bazooka missile goin' in one window, down the hall & then out another window, I thought it was pretty good.

But that bit with the bazooka really pissed me off, like Torchwood was suddenly a fuckin' Warner Brothers cartoon...

Barely a spin of(f)...

Captain Jack Harkness was introduced on Doctor Who.

The Torchwood Institute was introduced on Doctor Who.

Jack, Gwen & Ianto have all been on Doctor Who.

Jack has returned to Doctor Who, post-Torchwood intro.

The Doctor has been mentioned (hell, the first season had his hand in a freakin' jar!!!) several times.

And ya can't spell Torchwood without usin' the same letters as Doctor Who.

Its a spin off, dude. Get over yourself.

Ever since they moved to mini series, the show has very ties to the Doctor.

Has none of the Doctors enemys.
Has none or little metion of the Doctor.
Pretty much exists outside of the Doctors Universe.

I mean u can watch the last mini series and this one and never of had to watch Doctor Who.

So buddy get over yourself.

Thats like saying we should of put the Jeffersons in the same folder as All in the Family.

2 Different shows that might of shared characters and their beginnings, but totaly separate shows.

Thats the definition of spin off. We've always discussed Torchwood ( and the Sarah Jane Adventures) here. No reason to change.

First, the show switched to a mini-series format for the previous series so you have a grand total of six episodes for a sample size. In that six, the big Gwen Cooper monologue was about the Doctor. That means 16% of Torchwood episodes since switching to the new format have mentioned the Doctor. I bet 16% of TNG episodes didn't mention Kirk. It's still a spinoff.

Anyway, I thought the episode was quite good. Did not see Jack Harkness getting injured as a possibility. Definitely seems related to him returning, but I'm curious to see how this turns out. That autopsy of the guy who blew himself up was genuinely creepy. I couldn't help thinking the same fate awaits the helicopter pilot who was shooting at them.

So? Does that mean if Moffat delivers a season of Doctor Who with completely new villains then it won't count as Doctor Who?

You obviously did not watch the first episode in which the events of Journey's End are discussed, or the episode (Day 4, I think) in which Gwen discusses the Doctor for several minutes, or the fact bloody UNIT is featured throughout, and you must have changed channels before the Doctor met up with a morose and off-Earth Captain Jack in The End of Time Part 2. The Gwen monologue alone completely invalidates your argument because its entire purpose was to explain why shit was happening but the Doctor wasn't around. And the monologue, one of the most brilliant pieces of dialogue in 50 years of Doctor Who, singlehandedly covers off why the events of Torchwood and Sarah Jane are even allowed to happen without the Doctor, and this carries over into Miracle Day, which without fear of contradiction can probably be considered a "fixed point in time" that the Doctor would steer clear of.

And this is bad ... why?

Good spin-offs don't require knowledge of the parent program. TNG does not require anyone to have seen TOS. Hell, Doctor Who itself doesn't require anyone to have seen Doctor Who (or are you in the camp of those who continue to refuse to accept nuWho as canon?).

This forum is for the Doctor Who franchise. No different than the Stargate forum being about the many Stargate shows and the BSG forum being about the 4 (and counting) disparate series of that franchise.

Anyway, BACK ON TOPIC, I enjoyed the first episode though it did take a bit for Jack to appear (at which point the episode took off). Rex's reaction to Wales was hilarious (why do I think that stuff might not be in the BBC version?).

My only complaint is you can tell the American influence has taken hold - The New World is the first full-length Doctor Who franchise episode not to identify the title of the episode on screen. That's annoying.

Alex

The Wales stuff seems like it would have more appeal in the UK. I'll wait until the UK fans get to join in, but it seems tailored to English people mocking the Welsh (since Americans generally don't think about Wales much at all). I'd think they'd leave that in. Plus, it was a nice bit of humor (actually, it starts with the guy leaving the hospital. It was good for a chuckle, although it was weird it's simultaneously happening with serious dialog).

As for not featuring the title. I think as long as the writing of the episode itself is about the same, the more production-oriented stuff can move closer to American in tone. Just imho, but those seem like minor concessions to those funding the show.

^^ Yeah, I was wondering if that whole having to pay a toll for the bridge to Wales deal was a joke with some history that'd be funnier for the English.

How can a crisis of these proportions be happening and AMNN hasn't assigned Trinity Wells to make dramatic pronouncements about it on cable? Ridiculous!

^^ Yeah, I was wondering if that whole having to pay a toll for the bridge to Wales deal was a joke with some history that'd be funnier for the English.

I'm thinkin' the joke is ya have to cross the bridge & then pay the toll for it, rather than choosin' not to pay & not cross the bridge at all...

...or something.

The joke is, the dude is complainin' about the bridge & then has to pay for the privilage of usin' it.

I'm Welsh and I found it funny. You have to pay to get from England into Wales but not vice versa. It's not something we always joke about here, but it is something I've always found somewhat amusing.

I thought the episode was pretty good. It felt a little too American at times, but the low budget charm helped to offset that. Good to see Rhys back too, I wasn't sure if he was returning. The autopsy scene was well handled and creepy. I wonder if it will be cut down for the BBC version.
