Scotland to leave the UK?

union-flag-1.jpg

Instead of the Union Jack, we could call it the Black Jack. :)

I think we should also replace the red parts with fluorescent glow-in-the-dark yellow, and replace the white stripes with silver sequins. :)

But anyway, some years ago, there was an idea to add black into the flag.

Maybe we should squash the SNP before they get any bigger... Send in the SAS, treat Salmond like we did Guy Fawkes...

Maybe Scotland and Quebec could join up when they each separate. The United Contrarians of Scotland and Quebec or something like that.

Scotland believe devolution in a world that's only getting smaller is a good idea... Thank gosh I'm not Scottish lol. But Salmond said, break up from the union but not off the Queen, that's because he know's the Queen's got all the fire power, that's why he suggested such a move... How dare he, only way Scotland should be inderpendent is if they did it like Ireland! - Become their own nation and ask for a bail out. :)

I'm just saying, Scoland shouldn't be allowed to keep the Queen because she has all the fire power. - They should just shut up and focus on unifying the nation.

Goliath's flag is awesome.

:alienblush:

All I did was change the blue to black.

And that made all the difference! ;) I love the Union Jack as it is - great design, really, but the black version appeals to me because I've always felt that these colours go very well together. And it really looks great in this set up.

They're tainted as flag colours here because they're the colours of the Empire's flag but I think they can make great flags if designed right.

It's 2011 gosh darn it, it's too late for Scotland. - They should have worried about this acouple of centuries ago.

Much more accurate, and random.

Oh that is genius.

Because Scottish secessionists are ridiculous. They already belong to the third greatest country in the world, are very close to being culturally and ethnically indistinct from them, and would not be very likely to set up an independent government that was virtually indistinguishable from its present position within the United Kingdom.

Lloyd George, in the process of the Irish peace process supposedly once took Eamon De Valera to a map showing the British Empire and asked him if he didn't want to be a part of all this. I say supposedly because I heard that story once and I am supremely disclined to try and find a reference that'd prove it wasn't just someone talking out of their ass.

Ignoring the arbitrary denotion of merit for the United Kingdom, if you have to ask, you probably don't grok nationalism all that much. Ireland meets most of those requirements, but I've never felt independence was a mistake.

An obvious hyptohetical consequence of independent Scotland which secedes from NATO? Why, it wouldn't have to deal with Afghan, Iraqi and Libyan wars, for starters. I can see the appeal of the small neutral state policy, even if I've had moments to feel leery about it.

What "fire power" does the Queen have? And how would Scotland leaving an deciding to keep the Queen be that different than Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Jamaica, etc.

You could tell that that English hating bast*rd Mel Gibson's going to get involved...

Am sure the people who find themselves worser off will disagree. Scotland is still a country just like Wales and Northern Ireland, the UK makes us stronger but were still our own countries.
It's a nice sentiment, but does it really work when one country in the union is so clearly dominant? If the Scottish government wants to raise an issue with the EU but the British government does not, Scotland gets ignored. Be it domestic issues such as privatisation of services, or international issues such as war, England can easily override Scottish objections.

Scottish independence wouldn't be easy, but there are some advantages to be had. It's up to the Scottish people to choose if those advantages are worth the risk.

And if Scotland goes, would Irish reunification become more likely, a Balkanization of the Isles?
It would certainly have an interesting effect on unionism in NI as many of them are descended from Scots. I'm not convinced it would lead to a rise in Irish nationalism.

You mean Scotland should undergo war, civil war, partition, decades of discrimination and terrorism? No, I think a simple democratic referendum is probably better. As for the bailout issue, I'm trying not talk about that as it annoys some German posters here. ;)

Jamaica and Australia and Canada have the Queen, Ireland doesn't... Why should Scotland keep the best of both worlds like Canada and Australia if they're just going to break up the ****ing Union here at home? I'm not saying they want to keep the Queen, their leader of the SNP did... That's down right stupid, I think, keeping the Queen but saying **** you to the UK.

imho Irish Nationalism is about a whole different set of issues than Scottish Nationalism. I think it's a case of apples and oranges.

I respect America... - Nick Salmond wants Scotland to be like Jamaica, not of the UK but in the Commonwealth... I say he's asking for too much. Either leave the Queen or Stay British, it's really that simple to me.
