Any REALISTIC hope that 3D MOVIES may soon LOSE popularity or die out?

Re: Any REALISTIC hope that 3D MOVIES may soon LOSE popularity or die

As othershave mentioned the way films are made and watched has changed over time. first we hand silent movies then with sound both in B&W then colour.

As for TV first it was 4x3 then WS nw we have HD.

If memory serves up until fairly recently quite a few DVDs were realeased in the US using the outdated pan and scan. Whilst in Europe at least in the UK it would only be in that format if it wa filmd in that format.

I also think Europe was quicker to adopt WS as the standard TV size. As the old 4x3 size was virtually impossible to get new from around the turn of the millenium(aside from portable).

In the UK we have a deticated 3D channel Sky 3D so obviously they think there is a future in 3D to invest in a channel.

What will be will be, but I have absolutely zero interest in 3D.

Re: Any REALISTIC hope that 3D MOVIES may soon LOSE popularity or die

Although I prefer to see movies in 2D, it is unfortunately more convenient to catch a 3D showing of movies at my local theatre. Which sucks because movies like Thor and POTC are just 2D with 3D hastily inserted after the fact.

I hope that's true. Because ultimately these movies will be shown over the next 30 years on tv in 2D, after this fad dies out, and it would be a shame to have a bunch of shots that look like crap just to exploit a gimmick.

Good luck finding a 2D tv in ten years...

^^ Well, you don't have to watch a 3D television in 3D mode. You can still watch things in 2D just like you always have. It's kind of like all Blu-Ray players are backwards compatible to play dvd. Just because you buy a Blu-Ray player doesn't mean you have to throw out your existing dvd's and collect your video library all over again.

You can also desaturate your color TV to watch films in black and white.

I actually did that back when TCM was the colorization network instead of the primary reason to have cable that it has evolved into...

I have a shirt showing a guy at the Pearly Gates w/St. Peter saying "You colorized Casablanca. How unfortunate." :D

POTC 4 was filmed in 3D, it wasn't converted in post. I was going to see POTC in 2D but since they went to the trouble of actually filming it in 3D, I decided to give 3D another shot. It really wasn't worth it, so I'm going back to my 2D policy, though I reserve the right to make the occasional exception.

I used to desaturate for kicks. I remember someone on the TrekBBS, long ago, making the argument that the original Star Trek's cinematography looked better in black and white, so I once watched an episode de-colorized out of curiosity.

Wasn't bad.

You can also desaturate your color TV to watch films in black and white.
And then hit the mute button.

I don't mind watching 3D movies if the film was shot in 3D. Converting it over from 2D just doesn't work. I do mind the extra cost though and the theater I go too doesn't play those 3D films in 2D.

Agreed

You can also desaturate your color TV to watch films in black and white.

Of course you should also remember to turn on the closed captioning system as well.

Possible true, as ten years ago it was getting hard to find a TV that wasn't Widescreen. Which I didn't mind

It won't matter if all TVs are eventually 3D as the 3D feature has no effect unless you're watching a 3D channel. Unless and until a bunch of channels go all-3D, it won't be a fixture of the home TV viewing experience. There are still plenty of people with HDTVs who only subscribe to standard-def cable/satellite packages. This kind of technology shift takes decades to fully phase in.

I don't think 3D TV will take off unless they can do it without glasses, anyway. No one wants to have to go out and buy 5 or 6 pairs of glasses just so the whole family can watch TV.

Re: Any REALISTIC hope that 3D MOVIES may soon LOSE popularity or die

Yeah, the big problem with 3DTVs is that there's no real standard at the moment. Different companies are pushing different things which aren't compatible which is then making it hard for adoption. If 3D broadcasts are made, there will need to be a standard in place that all TVs made will follow. It's just too expensive to broadcast in 3D though which is one of the underlying reasons why it won't take off. It's a niche market, and for the little return they'll get, it just won't be worth it. It's already happened with a Canadian broadcaster which I explained earlier in the thread.

That does seem to be real stumbling-block. And what if you have company over? Do you need to keep extra glasses around for guests, or will be visitors be expected to bring their own glasses if they think they might end up watching tv?

Family holidays could get really tricky. "Does anybody have a spare set of glasses for Grandma or Cousin Joe? The big game is starting any minute . . . ."

Conversely as I mentioned the UK has a 3D channel, Sky 3D true it only has limited prgoramming but that is more down to the fact there isn't much out there not that there isn't demand. They've even broadcasted thinks like Football and Golf in 3D Live that is.

I think the big problem is that it's a pointless waste of time. I expect holographic projection to be the real standard. This glorified pop-up book crap is stillborn.

Re: Any REALISTIC hope that 3D MOVIES may soon LOSE popularity or die

Remember, we were told that 3D was the 'inevitable wave of the future' in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and now in the 2010s... It'll take over just about when Betamax, Laserdiscs, and DIVX dominate the industry.

Unfortunately, when 3D was launched in previous decades, it didn't come with millions upon millions of investment by studios and exhibitors to upgrade to digital 3D projection. Hollywood has invested too much money in 3D this time around for it to just vanish. If it fails it will be something that happens over a longer period of time than previous 3D failures.

Re: Any REALISTIC hope that 3D MOVIES may soon LOSE popularity or die

Garbage like The Green Hornet should not be in 3D.

Why not? Anyone paying to see that movie in any form might as well be fleeced as much as possible, before they inevitably park on train tracks or something. Call it Darwinism.
