As othershave mentioned the way films are made and watched has changed over time. first we hand silent movies then with sound both in B&W then colour.
As for TV first it was 4x3 then WS nw we have HD.
If memory serves up until fairly recently quite a few DVDs were realeased in the US using the outdated pan and scan. Whilst in Europe at least in the UK it would only be in that format if it wa filmd in that format.
I also think Europe was quicker to adopt WS as the standard TV size. As the old 4x3 size was virtually impossible to get new from around the turn of the millenium(aside from portable).
In the UK we have a deticated 3D channel Sky 3D so obviously they think there is a future in 3D to invest in a channel.
