generations question

Fortunately for Picard, he was off the ship when the ridiculous display of incompetence went down. The best ship in the fleet loses to a 20-year-old BOP because they act all cavalier about returning fire, and because they don't think to scan Geordi and his VISOR for tampering after he's been held prisoner for awhile.

so Picard dodges the blame.

Isn't the mark of a good boss supposed to be how smoothly things run when he's not around? The Captain is still responsible.

The only reason those rotten things happened in Generations was because Ron Moore (someone new to the francise) arrogantly decided to go this route, to “put his mark” on ST history.

What a hack.

Same goes for that rat-fuck bastard, son of a bitch Rick Berman for sanctioning that idea, too.

The one thing Picard has going for him is that, as a deep space exploration specialist, ships under his command are routinely placed in the most dangerous situations. Therefore, the loss of two ships in 25 years might not seem so extreme.
As for the new ship issue, it's funny that the producers decided NOT to go with a new ship (Excelsior Class) when they had the chance in TVH. Instead, they went with a copycat of the old ship for 2 more films. But, by the time of Gen, the producers couldn't wait to get rid of the old ship for a new one.
Think of how much scarier FC would have been with the civilian crew of the Enterprise D (children included) borgified.

Not that funny. When TVH was made they had a model of the original ship that was already big picture quality. Spruce it up a bit and it's the A, and for a fraction of the cost of building a new model. A CGI ship wasn't an option.

By the time of GEN computer graphics had evolved to the point that a model was no longer a necessity. A new ship could be
built virtually with no need for a physical model. In fact, I don't believe a physical model of the -E even exists?

I never did understand why the production staff didn't have the new Enterprise be an Excelsior-class starship at the end of STIV-TVH. It would have made, if not been, better sense to go that direction.

That's exactly what they did in the DC comic at the time. All the stories between the release of STIII and IV had the Enterprise crew taking the Excelsior out on a shakedown cruise. There was some fan belief at the time that this was the direction that the movies were going to go in.

The only reason those rotten things happened in Generations was because Ron Moore (someone new to the franchise) ...

Ron Moore had been writing for TNG for several years prior to Generations, including Relics and All Good Things....

:wtf:

What did he ever do to you? I can understand quibbling with his creative decisions, but there's no reason to get personal.

While I will cut him some slack in All Good Things...I sure as hell did not like his disrespect toward the character of Montgomery Scott in Relics.

Here is an example.

Geordi LaForge should have been severely disciplined by Picard for being disrespectful to Captain Scott...and if nothing else have his incompetent ass busted in rank to ensign. There is such a thing as respect for ones elders, let alone the chain of command. Granted Scotty was 75 years behind the times, but he still held the rank of captain. LaForge was a Lieutenant Commander, and an incompetent one at that.

Obviously, Moore doesn't think very highly of TOS. And if he did, he has a very bizarre way of showing it.

As to Rick Berman, his creative decisions damned near put an end to Star Trek by such artistic blunders as DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise. Even TNG had already become something of a creative joke by then, because of Berman's creative mishandlings.

That's why many old schoolers like myself have a deep dislike for Berman and his production blunders.

Have you ever met the man? Is there anything that he's personally done to diminish your quality of life that makes you feel the kind of personal animus towards him that you're expressing?

And as someone who grew up with TOS and TAS I consider myself a quasi-old-schooler (didn't see the show in the 1960s, but it's been on TV as far back as I can remember), I've got to say that I rather like DS9, VOY, and ENT. And even if I didn't, I wouldn't get that worked up about it.

A while ago I tried watching Babylon 5. For a number of reasons, I couldn't get into it. I knocked the episodes off my Netlfix queue. End of story. I didn't go around badmouthing whoever produced it, that's for sure. Even though I didn't find it accessible, whoever put that show together made some fans happy and gave a lot of other people work which, in the big picture, is more than I've done this week.

Geordi should've been disciplined for disrespect? Did you watch the scene? Scotty is intefering with Geordi while HE'S TRYING TO DO HIS JOB! Geordi should've been more tactful and patient sure, but SCOTTY was the one out of line there, not Geordi.

Picard's the captain of a ship of trained, professional officers, not the teacher of a bunch of cadets. He's not "responsible" for them in the sense you mean.

A commanding officer is always ultimately responsible for the conduct of his officers. That's how the military operates.

Yeah, that's exactly how Chang strung up Kirk in TUC. I don't really agree with the policy, but I can kind of understand it.

Yes, I did watch the scene. Nevertheless, Geordi should have been severely disciplined.

Montgomery Scott will always be the best engineer, no matter what century he is in.

Geordi LaForge is an incompetent, disrespectful pissant of an engineer. Inadequant(?)and obselete in every area.

Or as Red Forman would say...he's a dumbass.

But they HAD a film-quality Excelsior model, too. The large Excelsior miniature (6 foot?) was built for TSFS. It looked great to me in TUC. All they had to do was change the markings. No more difficult than putting "A" on the Enterprise filming miniature.

That occurred to me after I made my original post. As stated though, at the time Excelsior was generally loathed by the fandom. It probably didn't help that its introduction was as an antagonist.

Bingo.
