Cast the Characters of Trek Literature

Currently reading "Rough Beasts of Empire", and was wondering if there were any ideas concerning the re-casting of Tomolak, since Andreas Katsulas, who originally played the character (as well as G'Kar in Babylon 5) died in early 2006.

Why would we need to recast him? We can cast whomever we want in our minds, regardless of whether they're alive or dead.

Yep - I still cast people like Lee Van Cleef, Peter Cushing, etc all the time in my books...

While reading Blind Man's Bluff this week I was picturing Jane Lynch as Kat Muller, though not in full Sue Sylvester mode,
. . . And now I'm picturing Kat Mueller in full Sue Sylvester mode. . .

"I took command of this starship for one reason and one reason only. However, if the Borg succeed in overrunning the Federation, I may never have the chance to conquer it and declare myself Empress. . ."

To me the most vivid example of this is actually Nan Bacco. I have an incredibly vivid, specific view of Bacco, down to a sense of certain physical tics that aren't even described in the texts, but there's no actor I'm aware of who fully embodies my view of the character. Actually, the closest I can even think of to my view of Bacco is my 11th grade English teacher!

OK, this is a really old thread -- but I thought I'd chime in here, as I've just finished reading the DESTINY trilogy. In my mind -- and yes, this is "dream" casting, since the actress has died -- Bea Arthur (of MAUDE and THE GOLDEN GIRLS) has Nanetta Bacco down pat.

As for who would play Christine Vale, I would say a definite to Katee Sackhoff after seeing her on 24. One would have to ignore the narrative descriptions of Vale as petite, but I'm sold on Amanda Tapping in the role after having seen just a few episodes of Stargate SG-1.

Hermione Norris, who plays Ros on SPOOKS, might make a good Christine Vale if she could pull off an American accent.

Has any novel ever specifically said that Vale is American, or mentioned her accent?

Vale is Izarian, isn't she? No telling what her accent is. Maybe something like Garth's, but she could be from a different part of Izar.

She'd need to be a much younger Hermione Norris, though wouldn't she?

^Not significantly younger. IMDb says Norris (never heard of her) is 42-43 (doesn't give her birth month), and Christine Vale is 39 as of Typhon Pact.

I stumbled across this thread while looking up characters for a fan-fic story I'm writing. As I had already started 'casting' for that story, I sat down one night and tried to cast who I thought might work if Star Trek to return to television based on the SCE stories:

Capain David Gold: Donelly Rhodes
Commander Sonia Gomez: Julia Benson
Lt. Commander Kieran Duffy: Brian J. Smith
Lt. Commander Dominca Corsi: Heather Doerksen
Lt. Commander (Doctor) Elizabeth Lense: Leah Cairns
Lt. David McAllan: Jacob Blair
Lt. Jil Barnack: Malcom Stewart
Lt. J.G. Songmin Wong: Terry Chen
Lt. Ina Mar: Kandyse McClure
Ensign Nancy Conlen: Pascale Hutton
Crewman Fabian Stevens: Tahmoh Penikett
Crewman Bart Faulwell: J.G. Hetzler (full beard)
Crewman Carol Abramowitz: Claire Rankin
CPO Diego Feliciano: Dominic Zamprogna
CPO Vance Hawkins: Anthony Montgomery
EMH Emmett: Rainbow Franks

I'm at a loss who might work as Soloman.

I realize that a couple of these characters have appeared on the shows in the past, but more real world time has past than in the books, hence the re-cast.

At the moment, I'm struggling to find a muse for the following characters: Nanietta Bacco and Admiral Marta Batanides. For Akaar, I've always pictured Frank Langella, though Patrick Bauchau or Christopher Lee might work too as all of them have the height and are of sufficient age to suit the role. Somone mentioned Glenn Close, but she doesn't quite work for me as Bacco.

Wouldn't Gomez, Duffy, Stevens and Lense be played by Lycia Naff, Charley Lang, Jay Baker and Bari Hochwald respectively?

^As it happens, Outcasts started airing on BBC America this past weekend, so I know who she is now (you're quoting a 20-day-old post). I don't think I can see her as Christine Vale, though.

I always imagined Vale as smaller and more...friendly and happy? Not that she's always happy, but I've never thought of her at all like Hermione Norris' character in Outcasts.

I see Jaime Ray Newman in my head when I read a story about Vale. She's only 33 but that's not too much of a stretch I don't think.

I know, I've been out of the Treklit forum for a while for some reason.

I recorded all of Outcasts but couldn't get into it and deleted it after about 3 episodes. Hope you're enjoying it more than I did!

I found Outcasts kinda 'meh'. Certain characters - Tipper Malone for example - were interesting but most of the others were bland. I had a hard time identifying with Stella (the scientist played by Hermione Norris) and Cass Cromwell's emo whining annoyed me to no end.

But I digress...back to our original topic...

Having recently read Watching The Clock (which I thoroughly enjoyed BTW :) ), I could see Leela Savasta as Teresa Garcia. I'm trying to think of someone who could portray Jena Noi, but I'm having a hard time with it.

In my own mind, Teresa Garcia was based on Natalie Morales of The Middleman and White Collar, and Jena Noi on Salli Richardson-Whitfield of Eureka (and DS9: "Second Sight"). Further casting suggestions are on my Character Notes page (beware spoilers).

Ah...yeah, I could see Morales as Garcia...definitely. Much better fit than Savasta, actually.

Hmm...that's not how I pictured Noi, but I can see that... :)
