Robert Duvall. I mean Duvall did both "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" and "Time Tunnel", so why not Star Trek? If the original version of "City on the Edge of Forever" had been done, he would have been the ideal choice to play Beckwith.
And practically anyone else to play the Klingon in "Friday's Child."![]()
Ed Ames
And of course Lloyd Bridges would've been great as a starship captain.

He did eventually get to play one, on "Battlestar Galactica".
My nominees would be Robert Culp or Roddy McDowall. I could easily see Culp as a Starfleet Captain and McDowall as a villain or an exotic alien.

I always thought Adam West would be great as a fellow starship captain, maybe an old classmate of Kirk's.
You know who would have made a fantastic Edith Keeler? Lois Nettleton.
Rennie could easily have stepped into Robert Lansing's shoes as Gary Seven in "Assignment: Earth." As someone pointed out on a more recent thread, G.R.'s backdoor pilot was essentially Klaatu: The Series.. . . Michael Rennie (who also did the Invaders) Would have made a great alien..(Duh!)
I always thought Joan Collins was a little bit too "Dynasty" to play the role of Edith Keeler credibly.
That's like not being able to accept Leslie Nielsen as a serious spaceship commander in Forbidden Planet because he was the funny guy in Airplane! and the Naked Gun movies. Joan Collins played many "good girls" before the role of Alexis on Dynasty solidified her "diamond-studded bitch" image.

As to who could have guest-starred on TOS, here is my list of possible actors.
