I'm about to have a meltdown

This just gets worse and worse. For those who were following me on my previous post, I was offered to work out in San Diego. Unfortunately, it's not going to happen now. They took back a lot of the things they offered me which now makes the move impossible. So, as of this moment, I have a full month left of full time employment left until I can find something else.

I'm not happy about that.

So I'm back looking for jobs. Yesterday, (Friday) I had two interviews. They went well. The first job I interviewed with was for a company that I am really interested in. It seems like a good place to work and I love what the company does. As I said, the interview went well. No hiccups and no regrets from what I can think of. I liked them and they seemed to like me.

Skip ahead to today. I decide to send an e-mail to the two people who I met with from the first interview. Nothing long, just a quick few sentences thanking them for their time and me commenting how exciting the position sounds. So I spend a good portion of time putting the messages together.

I read over them and send them away. About a moment after sending one of them, I notice something. Something bad. I found a typo, but it wasn't in a word in the body if the sentence, I made a mistake in one of their last names. I didn't mangle the name or anything, but I just got two letters mixed up and reversed the order they came in. But, basically, I'm terrified. I hope the person doesn't notice and hold it against me, or, throw my hopeful opportunity off the table. It was an honest mistake, but very careless on my end. I just honestly didn't notice it. The name was somewhat tough to spell.

I know hiring managers can be sticklers about grammar. I hope I'm getting upset over nothing, because I really would like this job and would hate to lose it over something like this.

Am I freaking out over nothing? I hope so.

Yes. Don't sweat it. Just focus all your energy on how wonderful it will be on getting the job and doing what you want to do. Negative thinking won't help. ;)

Any manager who can't see through a simple typo to the excellent candidate they just interviewed is not someone you'd want to work for anyway.

I'm sorry that San Diego thing didn't work out. It sounded great.

Thanks. The SD thing is sad. I really would like this new job. The position sounds so exciting. I just can't see past the stupid error I made.

Yeah. However, the thing is that you wouldn't be able to tell whether the guy missed the typo or didn't care. If the resume, cover letter and the transcript was outstanding, Mr. Haynes might not care if you said Mr. Hayes.

Don't be so hard on yourself. It's a really stressful time for you and your emotions have probably been running high for awhile now. It'll be okay. :)

If people don't want other people to mess up their names then they shouldn't have hard to spell names in the first place.

Don't worry. A lot of people still don't do the follow-up after an interview so I think you are already way ahead of the game.

Yeah, don't worry about it.

Curious: what did they take back from the SD job? If they knew they weren't able to do it, they shouldn't have offered it.

Hey, it's not like we all pick our names! Everyone spells mine "Rahkee" instead of "Rakhee". I don't even correct people anymore.

At least you don't have people call you Mark...it is Matt! Matthew!!! :scream:

How about if we just call you Judy Smith from now on.:) Then again in todays world somebody might prefer Judee Smyth.

Do you get that too? I am a Matthew and I constantly get either Mike or Mark. I have a brother Mark, but even people who don't know him can't get my name right.:klingon:

YES! Ugh. I get called Mark instead of Matt all the time...I had started getting people to call me Matthew and it still doesn't help. :sigh:

[edit] I get called Mack too. Mack??? ugh.

Sorry to hear about San Diego issue...seems a shitty thing for employer to do. But good luck on interviews, and as others have said doubt typo will be deal-breaker. I've been in position of selecting candidates from CVs and covering letters, and you won't believe how bad many are...

If the interview went well, they are not going to pass on you because of a typo. Having interviewed a lot of people, I can tell you that the decision tends to be made based on the whole picture and not any one thing. I have never--never--interviewed someone that was without flaws. We are all human beings.

If you don't get the job, it won't be because of a typo.

It'd be one thing if this were a cover letter. These were a thank you notes, something that I didn't HAVE to send, but felt it would be a friendly gesture just to send one off and let them know that I appreciated talking to them and I enjoyed it.

That you sent thank you letters at all should outweigh a small typo. Most people don't send thank you letters at all.

Getting two letters reversed in a name is a pretty honest mistake. If the mistake were in basic english "your vs you're, loose vs lose, their, they're, there, etc." then you'd have a problem, as it doesn't mean it was an accident, might be about you. This was a clear mistake, so should be good.

I'm in the hiring process right now (we're replacing our graphic designer), and after looking over more than 80 applications / resumes / cover letters, and interviewing about a dozen of the applicants, I can assure you that there are far worse things in the world than reversing two letters of a person's last name. (For example, one of the interviewees asked, "How long will I be here before I'm allowed to change the organization's branding?" Uh, yeah, thanks for coming in today, we'll be in touch.)

You'll be fine. My last name's weird enough (it contains a "ck" sound with a "ch" spelling), and it's occasionally gotten messed up, particularly when I've forgotten to give someone my business card. Keep calm and carry on. If you're this far into the process, an innocent mistake will not torpedo your candidacy.

Somebody suggested that I send a new email and apologize for the mistake. I think that's a terrible idea, because if he didn't notice it, my e-mail will just call attention to it.

Yeah...At this point point you just have to let it be and hope for the best. :)
