How long before Republicans are calling Trump a Democrat plant?
Obama should have gotten his official birth certificate from Hawaii and released it a lot earlier. It was brought up in the 2008 campaign, there were lawsuits filed regarding this , etc. A lot of time and energy has been spent by both sides on this matter. Money was also wasted because of this issue... specifically Hawaii, New Jersey, Connecticut, California, and Indiana tax dollars were wasted in the lawsuits.
Heh yeah, exactly. Dunno about you, but I find a reality TV star (which is what he's primarily known for now, and less for his buildings and his empire) running for President to be quite scary. I don't know if I'd trust someone who's part of the media circus to be running a country, no matter what country it is. Just strikes me as a bad idea. I mean, the guy would probably have his hairpiece be his Vice-President. Find it quite ironic for a reality TV star to be calling the President out on his birth certificate.
And yet, Obama was the focus of a media circus leading up to, and in the weeks after the 2008 election. As I recall, it was that media circus that got him the job.
Americans seem to be fond of electing celebrities to office. Think about it... a wrestler (Jessie Ventura), action movie star (the Governator), SNL comedian (Al Franken)... Once there was even a movie star President (Reagan)!!!
This whole thing is ridiculous.
If there was even a hint that Obama was not really born in America, Hillary Clinton would have printed it out, rolled it up, and choked him with it in the public square.

He released the official document that the state of Hawaii uses to verify citizenship and it was authenticated by the state officials who regulate such matters.
How much effort should be expended by the White House to defend against every insane theory that nutballs want to levy against them?

Like I said a lot of time, money (including tax money), and energy was wasted on this issue. There was a simple solution to ending the debate ... so it should have been done earlier.
I really hope this finally kills off the majority of the "birthers" anger that a black man is our duly elected president.
I'm sure if it actually does, they'll just find some other issue to harp on. Now that the birth certificate has been released they'll have to face the strong possibility of admitting to themselves that they hate him not for his alleged lack of citizenship or politics. It's simply that they're mad about his race. I do so love how they adamantly deny being racists though.
My father-in-law is a devout birther and still clings to the notion that Obama is not a legally born American. He makes racist jokes and comments about the Obamas and yet won't admit that he's a racist or a bigot.
I have argued the point with him but there is no rationale that can reach an irrational person.
It really boils down to lots of people, especially older people, just cannot handle the fact that an American president is not caucasian.

Just for the record, I do recall McCain's birth certificate being checked because he was born overseas, and it had to be verified that he was born in the Panama Canal Zone, which is considered US territory.
That said, I thought the birth certificate thing was stupid. I imagine the delay in releasing it, though, was a political calculation on Obama's part to get people like Trump to create train wrecks for the Republican Party and weaken the 2012 playing field. Not because there was anything offensive or out of order about the document itself. The point about Hillary Clinton is another good one. If there's one thing the Clintons do well, that's digging up dirt on their opponents, and she would've done so if it were there. Which again makes me come back to the "political calculation" idea: it was to cause certain people on the farthest right to embarrass themselves and by extension taint ALL Republicans, whether moderate or far right.
You can argue about whether this was worth spending all the time and energy on, and you can argue about whether campaigning and political energy should have been spent elsewhere (and I think we should be debating serious issues like debt, energy, and defense), but there's no doubt in my mind this was a damn clever political move, with the hope that someone like Donald Trump would take the bait. I may be conservative but Donald Trump is too far for me. And it's my fear that he will do damage to conservatives as credible and cogent opposition.
Regarding Obama's race, I could hardly care less. I don't care what race someone is, only whether I like their politics.

Right, exactly. Reality TV vs Presidential Election. I meant it in terms of those who love the spotlight and who contribute to the whole reality TV craze. A reality TV star lives in the media circus. It's what they thrive on. The more controversy for them, the better. It's what fuels them. Obama on the other hand had to do what every candidate does which is make himself a viable and popular candidate in the run-off to the election. Not even barely the same thing. Is it any wonder why Trump was doing this? He thought he was the golden boy for doing it. It's more controversy for his ratings, something he's fueled on. He's counting on his already popular status and fans of his shows to win him some votes.
Oh, I did think about that when writing the post. I have respect for Reagan. I just don't think that being a reality TV star is quite the same as a movie star, so I consider that to be in a different category. The reality TV star tends to attract a different kind of crowd, one which I don't think would be great in running a country. I would be very dubious about it and I find it somewhat dangerous.

Why would you think that? The lawsuits will still keep coming. And people who give up on this are just going to move on to other things. Now it's his college transcripts. What'll it be next?
This isn't over until Obama leaves office. And maybe not even then.
All this nonsense is accomplishing is making the Republicans look like a bunch of petty whacked-out conspiracy theorists.
