^^I always just assumed McCoy was just trying to get a reaction out of Spock. Yeah, I guess that is kind of weak.
I wonder what the actual intention was with that line?
I think the intention was that Earth had conquered Vulcan.

I guess "regime change" was all the rage on Earth in that part of the 23rd century. How about the 6 or 7 different names of the Enterprise's operating authority (before they decided on 'Starfleet')? Some of them are so ridiculous that they would have been rejected by Captain Video for not being dignified enough, like "Star Service", "Space Command", "Space Central", "United Earth Space Probe Agency", etc.
Yes, I think Vulcan was supposed to be like Japan or Germany post WWII. The enemy turned ally. Obviously things went in a different direction. The guys behind Trek were tossing a lot stuff at the walls in those early days. Not all of it stuck and sometimes the wall was hosed clean.Seriously???
When Spock declines to have a drink with McCoy by saying that his people were "spared the dubious benefits of alcohol", McCoy scorns Spock's refusal by stating that he now knows why Vulcan was conquered. This is contradicted in "The Immunity Syndrome", when Spock says that Vulcan has not been conquered in its collective memory.
That line about "Vulcan cannot conceive a conqueror" is also a mistake, as Vulcans were incredibly violent conquerors in their past. And since Spock is well aware of this past, we can't chalk it up to the Vulcan's white-washing their history.
The best way I was able to figure this is that Spock's use of the term "race" wasn't referring to Vulcans in general like we'd use race today (the Vulcan race), but rather the way the term race way commonly used in the mid - late nineteen sixties when the episode was aired, a subdivision within the Vulcan species. We know from the examples of Spock and Tuvok that Vulcans do possess at least two (or more) "races." and we know historically that the Vulcan fought between themselves a lot.SPOCK: "My father's race was spared the dubious benefits of alcohol."
McCOY: "Now I know why they were conquered."
A website counted 10 shuttles very much lost 7 most likely lost, and eight badly damaged in the voyager run.

It's not entirely impossible that they constructed new ones, though. But of course, it's somewhat unlikely.

Voyager designed and built the Delta Flyer from scratch in the space of one episode. Compared to that, replicating standard shuttle parts and welding them together is more than feasible.
There isn't anything in the premise that says they can't build new equipment. It would be stupid if they COULDN'T build anything.

It's one thing to fabricate a part or two when needed, but to be able to essentially replicate entire spacecraft just stretches believability.

Still, whether it's shuttles or torpedo casings or battle damage, Voyager can obviously manufacture (or trade for) what they need. It isn't a case of making due with what they arrived in the Delta Quadrant with.
