Music genres you don't 'get'

Here's another growler whom I find not that difficult to understand - Johan Hegg from Amon Amarth:

On first listen I understood the majority of the words. :techman:
Never heard these guys before, although I didn't mind it. Might check out some more of their music.
Check those out:

The best Death Metal band in the world (IMO)... At the Gates...

Also, if you like your metal brutal as fuck, you should really check out the new album by Cavalera Conspiracy, Blunt Force Trauma. It's an absolute beast of an album. Here's a sample...

What's that? Sounds halfway between someone drowning and someone farting into the microphone.

Servo,

I encourage you to check out...

Kataklysm

and

Lamb Of God

If you haven't already. :bolian:

As Roy Orbison said, "I'm only singing to people who want to hear me".

There is no genre I don't get. Genre is not an indicator of what I percieve as quality. Music I don't "get" is crappy, manufactured, materialistic hip-hop/rock/country/pop with no musicality, fake drums, etc. People who can't write, sing, or play aren't high on my list. And any other type of music that is produced in that way.

Servo,

I encourage you to check out...
Kataklysm

and

Lamb Of God

Yeah, Lamb of God are cool, been a fan of them for a while. I find Kataklysm a bit hit and miss personally, but I do like a few of their tunes.

Another recommendation, if you're not a fan already...

yeah Carcass is great. I am surprised no one has mentioned Sepultura...they were one of the first hard metal bands I listen to when I was younger...really my first exposure to the genre.

Sepultura are one of my favourite bands, up to the point where Max left. Arise and Chaos AD are two awesome metal albums. Cavalera Conspiracy are pretty much what I reckon Sepultura would sound like now if Max and Igor hadn't left.

The Haunted are an awesome band worth checking out, too...

With their first (and current, 'cause he rejoined) vocalist, Pete Dolving...

...and with Marco Aro, who did vocals on two albums (...Made Me Do It, and One Kill Wonder)...

I like The Haunted--or did, until they slowed things down.

Defleshed is like early Haunted, only cruder. It's like, The Haunted for people who think The Haunted is too progressive and complex.

I also like how this has become the "Metal genres you don't 'get'" thread.

I must admit, The Haunted's last two albums haven't blown me away. I appreciate that Dolving want's to increase his range as a vocalist, but I don't think The Haunted is the best band to do it with. Their style works better with his harsher vocals, with a touch of melodics thrown in. The last album (Unseen) was too vocally experimental. Even Dolving described it as an "arty farty" album. I'm just not convinced that's a good thing for them.

I knew as soon as the first person said they didn't get Death Metal that this was going to spiral into a showcase for the best the genre has to offer. :D

I really don't see the appeal of most country music, and rap. I still might like the occasional song in those genres once in a blue moon, but overall I find the majority of it uninteresting.

I'm going to have to go check out all this stuff when I'm somewhere that I can play music without disturbing people. I'm also one of those that doesn't "get" the harder metal sounds - specifically the growling/grunting aspects of it (the music is often fantastic).

Until a couple of years ago, I had pretty much no interest in anything that wasn't 80s-90s pop or rock.

Then I discovered Evanescence, and I've sort of branched into metal - Within Temptation and We Are the Fallen at least; I haven't found much else I like. I really only like female vocalists and HATE that growling stuff.

Never had any interest whatsoever in rap, techno or anything like that. Powerful singing and a good tune are what I look for in music.

Slayer, but this world is my world, this world is your world, each to their own desires and what not, I don't know.

Rap. What's the point? It has no melody.

It has no point. That's the point.

I agree, it's nothing but noise.

Earlier in this thread, I made the assertion that death metal was nothing but noise. I still don't like it particularly, but there can be good points to it, without the growling.

All music is more than noise.

Seriously, listen to (some of) these, I'm just going a bit overboard here, just giving you a selection, some well-known, others not so much, and tell me that rap has no point and is nothing but noise. Most of these are hip-hop, it's hard to find pure rap now, and the hip-hop element adds some melody to it. The rap adds a lot more to these songs than a sung verse would. Sometimes, it can get damn emotional.

I used to hate rap, on principle, until I actually started listening to it, and I really began to appreciate it. It's still not my favourite genre, but it's one of them.

I used to be part of the "rap=crap" crowd.

You know what changed my mind?

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

That game was dope. And after driving around for a while, listening to Radio Los Santos and Playback FM, I finally started to get it.

The radio stations are such an amazing part of the GTA experience. I'm no huge rap fan, but Cypress Hill + GTA works.
