What does God tell you?

^ this

(btw, I've never ever done the "this" thing before - and it just felt so good, so right :) )

Could I ask you both a couple of questions?

In my experience, this is how sane people (like yourselves) describe God "speaking" to them. It's a rare thing, and sometimes a life-changing thing. Defined in terms like these, my mother would say that God has "spoken" to her, as well.

My question is: what is it like, exactly? Do you hear an actual voice? Or is it just some kind of strong feeling, or intuition, or epiphany? Or do you receive some kind of sign or omen, like opening a Bible and finding a particularly compelling verse?

And finally: how do you know it's God? And not just your own intuition, or even a coincidence?

I won't debate or even question your answers. I really am just interested in hearing about your experiences.
I hope you don't mind if I answer. It's not like the movies; the sky doesn't open, the choir doesn't sing; there's no bright light. I've experienced God speaking through a person -- the kind of freaky conversation where the person could not possibly know that the words had meaning. And I've done it myself, like been compelled to walk up to a complete stranger and say something that made no sense to me at all (in one instance, it was, Mail the letter.). Or sometimes I'm grappling with something, and yes, I'll open the Bible or hear a sermon or have a conversation that confirms what I know to be true.

But more often it's an impression of rightness. You know the feeling when you look at your SO, and you know exactly what he's/she's thinking and you're right there on the same page? It's not verbal or even body language. For me, that's how God speaks. How do I know it's not me? Because it happens when I've reached the end of myself. I'm not guessing, I'm not choosing between two equally plausible answers -- I just am empty. And God speaks, and it feels like: oh, that's the way.

I don't hear voices. I'm a reasonably intelligent person who can work my way through stuff and come to an answer. I know what that feels like, and I also know what it feels like when the answer doesn't come from me.

Not trying to change your mind...but how do you know this answer is independent of you when it comes from your own mind? Your own experiences? Your own chemical processes? Your own predispositions?

I find this sort of explanation you give far more truthful than people hearing voices. I just think many honest, intelligent and sincere people often mistake this sort of thing for their own culturally derived proclivities...and of course there are many untruthful, unbalanced people who ruin it for the others.

I can only reiterate what I said before, sorry. I know what it is to make a decision based on evidence, on prejudices, on guesswork, whatever. It's a conscious thing, everything from what to have for breakfast to whether I should marry this man. What I'm talking about, what you're asking about . . . isn't that.

It's like asking, how do you know that person isn't speaking English? Well, I know what English sounds like and that isn't it.

It sounds like it should be more mystical than that, I know.

It is no joke. This really happened. I find it fascinating that people will believe in aliens but doubt the existence of God. Is it because aliens don't hold us to any moral code, whereas God does?

Personally, while I don't "believe" in aliens, I find their existence more plausible than that of a god, especially the god outlined in Big 3 theism.

ETA: Part of this does have to do with morality, but it's the heinous immorality of god that puts me off, personally.

An alien has never shown me proof of their existence, but when I open my eye's in the morning and see the sunlight streaming through the wonderful colors that surround me I see God everyday.

^That's not proof at all. People can believe what they want -- there are many aspects of religion I find wondrous and fascinating. But there's no proof.

Occasionally, God will say to me, "You're spending too much time on the Medamn Internet. Go do something useful."

Sometimes I listen.

The other day I went to Mars and talked to God
And he told me to tell you to hang tight and don't worry
The solution to everything is death

In all seriousness... not all the time. I believe that truly hearing God is a special thing and people who say they hear Him all the time... I think they aren't really hearing Him. What I think they're hearing is their own desire.
I've only heard God a couple of times and I know it's been when it was really important that I heard Him for sure.

You mean like actually hearing? Deep voice, old guy?

Damnit, I NEVER actually get an answer when I ask them to specify it what they mean when they say they "heard God".

I couldn't help but laugh. :p
I reckon it's tons of people thinking they're hearing god just because their neighbour's watching a movie with Morgan Freeman.

It's sad that no one ever replies to that question, because it's interesting. Is it an actual voice or just a gut feeling? Is it a male voice, a female voice, your own voice, what the hell is it you heard?

2. If you could say hear God what might God say?

"I'm sorry, all our angels are busy answering other prayers right now. Your prayer is important to us, so please stay on the line and an angel will be with you as soon as possible".

<pause>

"You are currently fifth in line to be saved".
