Another Voyager 1st-time watch thread

All I've got is:

A) Voyager encounters some strange anomaly that makes everyone have to sing. Each crew member sings in a distinct style (opera, Broadway, jazz, country, etc)

B) While they're trying to escape from the anomaly, they rip a hole in the fabric time spacetime and Archer pops through.

C) Archer sings too. Janeway laughs flirtatiously.

D) Torres says that all the singing is worse than a warp core breach.

E) Tuvok says (sings) that, indeed, it is fortunate the anomaly is not a critic.

F) Trying another way to get out, they open another hole in spacetime. Shran appears and begins singing.

G) They nearly collide with a gang of Hirogen, who aren't happy at all.

H) They TECH THE TECH and eveyone gets out. They're treated to an operatic version of the history of the species that created the anomaly.

I) Everyone goes happily on their way.

Well, I'm back with a completely non-controversial episode...

"Fury"

I know that many Kes fans have de-canonized this episode (kind of like reversing the polarity of the hull plating), but I didn't find it that offensive. Just...weird.

It's the kind of story that's a good idea, but just has a few logical loopholes. Like, would the fact that Janeway was able to manipulate 2 year-old Kes into making a video really convince 8 year-old Kes to play nice?

Besides that, there's actually some great stuff here. Tuvok and Janeway share a wonderful scene (twice) that ends with a great Janeway laugh. And Tuvok in general is pretty cool in this one; for the second episode in a row, he has to ask to be relieved.

It was nice seeing the little season 1 touches, like everyone treating the Doctor like crap and Janeway's Power Bun.

But mostly this one was just kind of strange.

What's Fury? I've never seen this episode before.

I actually, and sadly, have seen this episode and well . . . It's one of the main reasons I'm not an entirely big fan of Brannon Braga's.

Why?

Because he destroyed Kes. Luckily the end had just a tiny bit of redemption. But still . . .

Sorry, I don't know what episode you're writing about, Shatnertage I'm like Mair -I don't think I've ever seen this episode before. I'm sure you just had a bad dream. I can't believe they'd stoop so low as to ruin one of the kindest characters on the show for no reason.

I liked "Did you inform anyone else of your discovery?" the best. Followed by, "It was a fire hazard."

I'm not personally offended by this one. I think the writers must have missed the mark - I never really got if they were trying to present Kes as insane or senile, or a little of both. Maybe I could share the sense of outrage felt by others if I could understand the plot better.

What does really irritate me is that when this episode is discussed, there is often some idiot who wants to complain about Jennifer Lien getting fat. No, she did not get fat. She merely stopped maintaining an UNDERWEIGHT body, which is what actresses do when they have a regular role on television.

On the bright side, Tuvok's birthday is a classic moment, and - AND! This episode contains one of my all time favorite lighthearted moments in all of Trek: Janeway and Chakotay sharing a wry chuckle over the kidney-thief urban legend. I found it hilarious that this particular piece of our own culture is presented as having survived into the 24th century.

I never would have put the words "fat" and "Jennifer Lien" in the same sentence. I'd like to see some photos of these idiots.

A funny thing about the kidney-thief legend. A while ago I was chatting with some locals here and we were sharing hard luck Vegas stories that we'd personally witnessed--friends who lost money gambling, got messed up in the club scene, etc. And one guy tells us the kidney legend, thinking that it's something no one's ever heard and somehow on the same level as you talking about how you drove your friend to the airport after he lost his money, his girlfriend, and his dignity. Cracked me up.

Kes is going senile.
She doesn't remember even making the holo-video.

The ep. is about Kes growing old, being seline and afriad.
The effects of the "Mor-Elogium" is explained in "Before & After".
Remember, when she told folks she was timejumping she was old and her daughter saw it as a sign of natrual breakdown of mental stability.

Growing old isn't always golden.
I like the ep. because it's cool to see how powerful Kes is and it's a interesting view on Alzhimers.

But then "I'M" strange.

This ep figured prominently in my first "epic" fanfic that I wrote between season 6 & 7.

From Eyes Open, part 2 of the finale to seven years of Voyager as imagined by one lowly fan. Kes has arrived to "save" Voyager's crew.


Janeway: This is enlightening... but confusing at the same time. There's still something you haven't mentioned, Kes.
Kes: Yes Captain?
Janeway: What happened last year... when you... It WAS you?.... when you returned to Voyager?
Kes: (Looks briefly at Yandrin, and then tips her head in embarrassment) Yes, Captain... it was me. What happened? Hubris, Captain. (Sigh) I thought I'd learned enough by last year to re-enter the Caretaker's fantasy world and bring you out. I was wrong.
(Kes trembles with the memory.)
Kes: As soon as I entered, he was able to control me and forced me into a scenario he was sure would kill me. (she smirked) But, you surprised him, again. Instead of killing me when I reapppeared on Voyager that 2nd time... you were able to break his control on my mind and bring me back to my senses.
(She shakes her head saddly.)
Kes: I was so chagrined at how easy it was for him to control me. I nearly lost everything... but I learned from my mistakes. I would never directly challenge him in that reality again. Instead, I would work to enter the minds of the people IN the fantasy. By planting doubt & watching that doubt grow... I would bring about the changes needed to expose his charade. And I started in the least likely place... which he didn't monitor as closely.

I can't believe they'd stoop so low as to ruin one of the kindest characters on the show for no reason.

It shows the difference from life in the AQ vs. DQ.
Species in the DQ would have hunted her down.
Her whole point for wanting to go back to Ocampa was because it was the only place she felt safe and called home.

CAN I GET AN AMEN?!

Sure, they give poor Kes guff for getting back to a normal human weight, but completely ignore the fact that basically everyone else on the cast wasn't as stupidly skinny as they were in 1995, either.

Only Jeri Ryan never really changed, and I'm sure that was due to A) Her Victorian-era corset and sausage-casing combo, and B) TPTB warning her if she ever ate any food, ever - they'd come after her. They probably rigged a proximity alarm on the food table.

And, anyways, I simply can't feel anything but anger for how Kes got treated in this one, even if there were bits I liked here and there.

We were given the impression in "Pathways" and "The Gift" that she would always be around as a comforting presence and living happily. There was just... no reason to have her come back in such a way.

That's IMO for no other reason but personal choice of fitness.

I'm sorry ladies but you can't look at Jen Lien today and say that her weight gain isn't fat.
I find nothing wrong with big girls myself, I even find some sexy if they aren't sloppy.
Camron Manhiem, for example. Big woman but dresses and presents herself well.
As far as Lien:
If you're going to do a Con., the least you can do is get your hair done.

Seriously, she older now and isn't really a "sex symbol" so much anymore. So she doesn't really need to, however I'm sure the hubby doesn't mind either.

I think even though Dawson isn't in front of the camera anymore, I think she maintains too.

However, I rather not continue with the personal issues of Jen Lien and stick with the character she plays instead. Jen's issues with her weight should be hers & hers alone.

My view on Jen is/was that her true talent in industry was her voice (unlike some other *cough* VOY actors) so maybe she didn't need to 'care/fret' about her body as much once off-camera. But that's a moot point.

I always liked 'Fury' despite its fuckover of character. Guess I was just happy to see her back even in some small way...
