Buffy season nine discussion thread

SlayAlive.com WonderCon 2011 Q&A with Scott Allie - part 1

Some of the more interesting answers/info:

  • Season 10 is not planned to be the last season
  • He doesn't give a definite answer to the question "Can vampires still sire", but says it's a great question and will be dealt with
  • Joss has very specific plans for Illyria and is "itching to get his hands on her again", but Allie still doesn't know if she'll be in 'Angel and Faith'
  • Drusilla will show up in season 9
  • Spike won't have his own series, but he'll have an "appropriate and significant role" in Buffy S9, and dealing with more than just Buffy herself
  • Allie refuses to give any hints about what to expect between Buffy and Spike in S9: "I know this is one of the things people most want to know, but that's because it's worth waiting for"
  • The soul issue and Angel/Angelus issue will be explored in 'Angel and Faith'
  • Jane Espenson and Drew Greenberg will be writing for season 9.
  • About Joss's role in S9:
He's cowriting Buffy, but his work on A&F will be more like his work on your average issue of Season 8. Approving outlines, giving notes, pitching in ideas, and editing scripts and some dialogue. He's very much a co-editor on this stuff, superseding Sierra and me. For instance, on A&F #1, he approved the outline for the first arc after a couple drafts, then gave notes that called for two scenes to be rewritten before going to Rebekah. There's a lot of dialogue between him and Chris, with Sierra and me in the middle, especially as we sketch out the supporting cast, the new characters we're introducing. Joss has very specific ideas about how to intro a new character, and making sure we take the time required to do it right, which we didn't always get to do in Season 8, because we introduced such a large supporting cast.

I like the Buffy one better.

Here is the Jeanty cover for Angel & Faith (spoiler tagged for size):

Two more covers were revealed at the WonderCon panel - so far we only have the screenstills from the video on Youtube:

Steve Morris cover for A&F:

I like the coloring and Jeanty's drawing of Buffy here, much better than I did in most of S9. His Buffy often looked too childlike, but he got better in #40.

"25" probably refers to the 25th anniversary of Dark Horse. Or maybe the 25 issues that both S9 and A&F will have. Or 5 x 5.

I did like the Jo's cover for Buffy, I just liked the Faith and Angel one better. I guess I was correct in assuming that there were be story arcs crossing over.

I like the buffy cover where she's on golden gate very cool . and faith look hot as
usual . can'nt wait till august .

spike #7 at the end had the bug ship in it . and dru got the soul.
angel #43 no hint on the twilight yet.

Nice news, I'd been hoping that Faith would be part of the new Angel series.
Have to say that Jeanty cover for Angel & Faith isn't brillaint though, the drawing of Faith is pretty bad.

I presume it will start off with just them, and then, I hope anyway, they might slowly reintroduce Connor, Gunn and Illyria etc. As if they don't feature I'd be a bit pissed

So now is the new Angel series starting off with Angel and Faith (I assume this is a mini-series) and then will delve into a full fledged Angel ongoing? I must admit I wasn't expecting Faith and Angel to headline a book, but kind of thought that the two of them would be working together a lot. Anyone think that this could lead to a romance ala Spike and Buffy style?

In the Allie Q&A I linked to, he answered the question about Connor and Illyria - Connor will certainly be in A&F, but it's still not sure if Illyria will be. She will, however, definitely be in something written by Joss, which means either season 9 or a mini-series (since Joss will not be writing for Angel & Faith):

27. Hellbound Hyperion: Along the lines of Angel characters, I think it was also mentioned that Joss had some plans for Connor... like Illyria, his character made great strides in the IDW series. So what sort of role will Connor have in S9, and is Joss equally as itchy to get his hands back on Connor as he is with Illyria?

Scott: I can't say equally as itchy, no, because Connor's story will mostly be told by Chris and Rebekah in Angel & Faith. He's willing to leave it to them, whereas he very distinctly said at one point that Illyria would be his—maybe not exclusively, but he wants to get in there.
He was very ambiguous about Gunn though:
31. Sjaddix: Will we see Gunn in Angel & Faith during Season 9? Is Angel still using the Investigation model?

Scott: Things are very different for Angel from the five seasons of his show. He's not returning to Angel Investigations, if that's what you mean. Not ready to comment on Gunn right now ...

It's not a mini series, it's a full 'season' with 25 issues. This way DH are avoiding the problem of explicitly confirming or rejecting IDW comics as canonical. If they called it season 6 they would be rejecting the IDW comics and if they called it season 7 they would be explicitly confirming all IDW Angel comics as canon, which they aren't ready to do. So, the IDW stuff remains in the 'murky canon' department.

As for the romance,
not in this run of the comics. That's one of the few ideas Allie shot down in the Q&A:

14. Sjaddix: Will we see Gunn in season 9? And will he get any powers? i would love to see the dark heart stuff explored. Are Angel and Faith going to be dating? What level will Connor's new powers be at?

Scott: Angel and Faith are not going to be dating. As far as various characters' powers, all bets are off, with the new non-magical world before us.

Okay. I wasn't expecting it to be called season six either, just was curious about adding Faith to the title. I think most fans were expecting it to be called "Angel". That's cool though and yeah I figured there wouldn't be a romance between them.

Well, they said they didn't want Faith to look like just a sidekick, "Girl Friday" to Angel.

^ That makes a lot of sense and quite understandable. I would have put Faith in her own spin-off book though myself. I still want a sequel to "Fray" as well (yes I enjoyed the crossover but I mean a true sequel) but doubt that there are any plans in the foreseeable future.

^ You've already been told that Angel is now under Dark Horse. IDW lost the rights and as has already been stated in the season eight thread they will be respectful to the stories that were told in the IDW Angel series.
