iPad 2 Revealed

So, every year we're going to get a new Ipad/pod/phone. I can't stand that shit. As soon as you buy one, another comes out, it's rediculous. I'm just glad sony gave us some time bertween playstations.

I still haven't QUITE figured out what I'd use it for that my netbook and phone can't handle (with a real keyboard on the former), so I'll pass for now. :)

Not trying to pick on you, I've just seen this sentiment from several people and I wanted to address it.

I don't think it's a matter of the iPad doing something that other devices can't. For me, I like the functions it offers in this particular form. For example, having a real keyboard isn't important to me. I like that it's just one simple device that I could prop up on my knees while watching TV or something. I like that it's got a bigger screen than my iPod Touch without the bulk of a laptop.

I think a lot of it is a personal choice. I don't like having too many devices. I have a laptop that's really more of a desktop because I like to game. I don't want a netbook to take to class or anything like that though I've considered it in the past. I think an iPad would fit some of the gaps I have. I don't think it's that way for everyone, but obviously there's a market for it.
That's cool.

I have a laptop, a smartphone and a netbook. I'm pretty much saturated when it comes to devices. My laptop is my "main" computer, and like many laptops it's not usually moved. My netbook does wonders for schoolwork as it's extremely portable. I can easily lug it around and its lightweight doesn't really sacrifice functionality. Then there's my phone, when I'm on the go.

Personally, an iPad wouldn't be justifiable for me.

Yeah, I see what you mean. I'm considering getting a smartphone later this year and even that seems like too much to me!

The information addict in me requires that I get a smartphone, so I can read the news or google stuff wherever I am. It's non-negotiable :p

I'm torn between the desire to have the access to information and my resistance to being connected all the time. My current solution has been to take over my husband's smartphone when we're out together, and he is less than pleased about it!

Apples (heh) and Oranges. Do you really think any company in the mobile industry could remain competitive if they followed the same product life cycle as game consoles? You just can't compare them like that. The mobile market is extremely competitive, any company not regularly releasing new product is going to die very very quickly.

They're not forcing you to upgrade every year, that's your choice to do so or not. It's not like Apple just releases these things all willy-nilly. (Except for the current Verizon iPhone, it will be interesting to see how they handle the upgrade cycle for that product.) They have a set product refresh cycle that is quite well known. I bought an iPhone 3GS in November 2009 knowing full well that a new model would be coming out in June. I plan on keeping my 3GS for 2.5-3 years. My next iPhone will probably be the iPhone 6 in 2012. Same with my iPad. I bought one in July knowing that the iPad 2 would be out in early 2011. I probably wont upgrade until iPad 3 or maybe even iPad 4 depending on new features.

*looks up from my Dresden Files book on my droid while simultainously listening to MP3's* gadgets, eh?

Looks beautiful. However, I've only had the first iPad about six months. By the time I'm ready to replace it, iPad 3 or 4 should be even better.

I'm not about to upgrade my iPad 1 to version 2 either. I don't care to Facepalm someone with a view directly up their nostrils.

For the people wondering how much use there is to be found in an iPad... I've got an iPhone and a Macbook Pro and the iPad sits happily between the two. I take it to work as it's got all my notes on (I only use apps that have a cloud sync so I'm not locked in) and I read a lot of RSS feeds. Yes I could use the same apps on my iPhone, the extra screen size is the killer feature though.

My old netbook is gathering dust in a cupboard. The only time that gets used is if I'm going somewhere for a couple of days and I don't want to take the MBP.

You've just noticed this now? Apple refreshes their products like clockwork.

Leaving Apple aside for the moment, there's a tremendous amount of innovation going on in mobile tech right now and the CPUs that power these devices are improving at a frenetic pace. It's pretty amazing to watch the industry develop. Apple's, um, interesting viewpoint of their competitors aside (the quote Jobs gave from Samsung was completely incorrect) the consumer tablet market is going to explode with real competition this year. Early adopters always loose out, but innovation and competition is always good for us consumers.

About the only things Apple is leading is amount of apps and design. Already major competitors are closing the technological gaps fast (and by some early reports are going to surpass the iPad) and Android is breaking ground left and right which means more apps for it too.

Apple is always breaking ground in a spectacular way but the competitors are always catching up and almost always surpass the initial Apple product in everything save design (which is a matter of taste i think).

However Apple is staying with the leaders just because they're Apple and it is cool to have the latest Apple device which for some is reason enough.

I'd much rather buy this:

http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-duo/pd

Functionality wise I hear it's got a little way to go but design wise it blows Apple out of the water.

Imagine if that was an OS X device... in laptop mode you have Snow leopard but in tablet mode it becomes iOS 4.

Now THAT would be cool...

Design is 'how it works.'

Design is how intuitive the GUI is. Design is how tired your arms get while holding it. Design dictates how long tasks take and how easy they are to do.

Basically, design is one of the least objective things out there. Hardly a matter of taste.

No, I didn't just now notice it, I just get increasingly more irritated the more frequent it is. They should just wait if they have more stuff to add. Don't release it untill your absolutely ready. I understand what they are doing and why, I just think it's an asshole thing to do.

It's not always about having the best specs. It doesn't matter how powerful a device is, if the user experience is lacking. For the most part, the iPhone and iPad do what i need/want them to do, at a price point that I find acceptable. Plus I've probably dropped at least 300 bones on apps and games, so there is another incentive to stay in the Apple ecosystem.

Just exactly what would you consider an acceptable amount of "more stuff to add"? Is thinner, lighter, dual core, faster gpu, dual cameras, and completely redesigned exterior not enough for you?

It isn't more frequent. I have a lot of criticisms I'd be happy to levy at Apple but there's been a new iPhone yearly for 4 years now, so of course the iPad will follow the same pattern. And Apple does support their own products (though not quite as much as their marketing would have you believe)... most of the people who buy yearly do so because they want to, not because their current products are unusable.

The reality is that electronics are constantly improving. This has been the case for decades. If you wait until it's "ready" you will be waiting forever.

Does anyone know if the iPad 1 will go down in price any once the iPad 2 is out, or will it stay pretty much the same?
