Keough=Riker

In his defense, the Odyssey is a total cow. Tactics didn't matter, they were screwed from the beginning.

The thing I took away from that episode is that Starfleet had become bloated and soft. It was going to take a more hard-edged, efficient kind of thinking to fight the Dominion.

Galaxy class starships are big and heavy. That's not Keogh's fault. We don't see the Enterprise-D doing crazy barrel rolls.

Keogh at least fires his phasers. Riker stands around and asks for damage reports, fires one shot, then asks for more damage reports.

Keogh > Riker. Actually, anyone > Riker

Give Keogh some credit. He held off 3 Jem Hadar fighters long enough for Sisko and co to be rescued without any shields.

It's not like he lost his ship to a gang of Ferengi in beat up old Birds of Prey and then had to be rescued by a group of children. ;)

Hm, perfectly valid points. This bears further analysis.

(I am not a Riker hater, I think he's perfectly a-okay as a character. It's the whole Riker-as-Captain bit that irks me)

I remember reading that for all intents and purposes the Odyssey was supposed to be a stand in for the Enterprise in that the ship and crew were well regarded in terms of weapons, defense, capability, etc. And the way the Jem Haddar defeated them was to illustrate how bad ass the Dominion were.

I think it's a shame that they didn't use the Enterprise-D bridge in that episode for the scenes aboard the Odyssey's bridge.
