Riker and Deanna Troi were supposed to be "imzadi" soul mates, right?

Amazing how much misogyny can spool out of such a short post.

Firstly aren't all the aliens in Trek weird? We gonna label Klingons weird, Vulcans weird, Ferengi weird? Seems redundant.

And everything you said equally applies to Troi. You could argue for her more so, as Imzadi is a Betazoid construct.

The reality: it was a plot device for the early episodes, largely forgotten thereafter.

Dee was 30 to 40 years away from reaching her sexual stride.

It would have been a waste of resources to use up poor Will like a leaking fountain pen, as a young girl, in her 20s.

Sometimes it seems to me like the writers couldn't decide what to do with those two.
Did anyone else get the impression they were “friends with benefits” at times during TNG’s run? Episodes like “Ménage a Troi” suddenly have them very touchy feely and I’m sure on more than one occasion we saw them cuddling up together.
I have a friend who is exactly like Riker and Troi: they had a deep prior relationship that, for whatever reason, didn't work out. But they still think the world of each other. They're best friends who sometimes sleep together in between relationships. It's comfortable for them. And, yup, sometimes there's a tiny bit of tension when one of them meets someone, but they're still friends who could still wind up together. Or not.

But having known this friend for awhile really helped me understand Riker and Troi better.

I apologise. It seems I have created great DISCOURSE from saying shut up.

I mean it's such a light term. It's silly. It's innocuous. Picard shouted "shut up Wesley" on regular occasion and no harm was felt on a universal-rated show. But here... well. Its's now 12R or maybe a 15.

We can allow misogyny. And transphobia,. And blatant homophobia with talk of "flag waving" if you dared defend a woman (funny that, gays defending the womens). How fucking dare we.

But we're in Trump's world now, and "shut up" and we've crossed the line.

So I apologise humbly. Gotta work on my ESTA credentials.

maybe, but maybe it was one of those things where the underlying feelings never went away, and as such those feelings manifested in certain situations. being back on betazed in a flower garden for example..sometimes the perfect storm like that happens in a moment, and then afterwards, pragmatism kicks in and you think "What am I doing??", and things go back to normal

IMHO the more interesting question to ask is, while we know Riker had some trysts with alien interests, did we ever see him showing romantic interest in anyone else on the crew? (Apart from Ro Laren when he was amnesiac or Beverly when inhabited by Odan)

We saw Geordi, O'Brien, Picard, Wesley, Ogawa, & Data etc... all dating people aboard ship, but I've been racking my brain to recall a time where Will was shown dating or cavorting with anyone else aboard there. Likewise, apart from that alien influenced stuff in Man of The People, I can't recall Troi ever dating anyone from the crew, until Worf. She too had a few outside romances spring up, but neither of them seemed to date from within the pool of over a thousand folks aboard ship, on long-term assignment, surrounded by them daily

That's significant, given others were routinely doing so. That they didn't, presents another implication that they weren't regularly looking about for coupling there, outside one another, even if their connection was being in some way curtailed.

To use a rather colloquial term, perhaps he didn't want to shit on his own doorstep.

He wanted to get up to captain and romantic distractions may have not been good for that goal.

He was second in command, so had a position of power and authority - it could lead to many issues.

And the writers may have been trying to balance the line of making him a bit of a lady's man like Kirk, but without seeming like a predator for his crew members. So thus he had his 'romance episodes'.

But really relationships they didn't dabble with much at all. Even the Picard/Beverly thing was a lot of teasing to the viewers and not much else.
