Young Justice-Tonight!

I liked how the first third or more of this episode was dialogue and character interaction, rather than just having snippets of those things in the midst of wall-to-wall action. A bit slow-paced for an animated superhero show, but it works for me. Whenever I watch Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, I wish they'd spend more time on the character stuff. Not sure yet if these characters are as potentially interesting, but I have faith in Weisman. (Although the puns on word fragments -- first "whelmed," now "turbed" -- have already worn out their welcome.)

They were never welcome.

Well, okay, I thought "Why isn't anyone ever just 'whelmed?'" was funny. If it had stopped right there.

I had to work while is was on and I forgot to record it, so I missed it.

Heh, "Sportsmaster", it's funny how ludicrous some comics things are when you didn't grow up with them.

Odd seeing subtitles on a cartoon. I never really read Batman but I didn't know Bane was a Luchadore.

An interesting one. Nice seeing them work out the chain of command, and I like the way Kaldur/Aqualad emerged as a natural leader. Although he's such a natural fit for the role that his talk about Robin being born to lead the team sounds unconvincing, like an Informed Ability in TV Tropes terms. So far this Robin has yet to demonstrate any reason why anyone else would see him as a born leader. (And again his humor is based on removing prefixes from words that are never used without them. This time it's "concerted" from "disconcerted." Enough already.)

They seem to be portraying Bane as a maker and distributor of Venom, which is ironic, since in the comics, after he kicked his addiction to Venom, he became an antihero on a crusade to take down its makers and distributors. But I guess the idea in this "Earth-16" setting is to go with early versions of the characters. I would've liked to see some mention of Bane being inspired by his clash with Robin to begin stalking Batman and probing him for weaknesses. But at least we did see a hint of the mastermind Bane is in the comics, in the way he played the sides against each other. Weird how his luchador mask seemed to be reinterpreted here as face paint.

And I agree that "Sportsmaster" is a lame name and concept for a villain, but this goofy Silver Age character was reinterpreted here as a real badass, with an eye so keen that he could track Miss Martian even when she was cloaked. As for the Kobra cult, I don't find them substantially less silly here than I did when they showed up in Batman Beyond. But it's interesting to see some continuity with the Blockbuster stuff from the pilot. And it's an intriguing (if icky) design concept, the way the increase in muscle size actually tears the skin open.

I'm starting to get comfortable with Bruce Greenwood as Batman. He's doing a good job.

There was an error in the date captions -- they said "June 18" and "June 22," even though the series premiere was on July 4. But the last caption said "August," so I guess those were meant to be "July." Hopefully they'll fix that in the reruns/DVDs. It's so rare to see an animated series with a clearly defined timeline, and as something of a chronology nut, I'd prefer not to see any inconsistencies.

My guess is that Robin is going to eventually grow into the leader we all know he can be from the comics. There was an interview with Wiseman and company from early last year that said while Aqualad may start out as the leader...he's not be the leader all the time.

Well, yes, of course, we know that. My point is that there's no in-universe reason for Kaldur to think that. Characters shouldn't believe something just because the writers intend it or the audience expects it.

.
Golden Age, he was originally a Green Lantern villain from the 1940s. Being a gifted athlete who uses sports themed weapons, why shouldnt he call himself "Sportsmaster"?

This series isn't blowing me away so far but it shows promise. It gets plus points for using Bane... and minus points for the Kobra cult. I have never found comic book cults to be interesting, be it Kobra or Hydra or AIM.

^ Sigh. That wasn't my point. I wasn't posting from a character point of view was I?

But I was clarifying that that was my point. My initial complaint was about the credibility of the character's in-universe reaction, not about our perception as viewers. Why should you object to me clarifying what I intended to say? That doesn't reflect on you in the least.

Looking at the leader discussion from a character standpoint, rather than a plot point, it was a great moment when Robin ceded the role of leadership to Kaldur (though, I agree, less so when Kaldur gave his, "You're the natural leader, you're just not ready yet," speech). I guess, meta or not, characters know that "Batman=leader" and anyone associated with Batman will become the leader, by default. Why? Because he's Batman, that's why.

Of course Kaldur or any of the characters wouldn't be aware of that. I wasn't stating my point or trying to contradict yours, was simply saying what the writers had said and it sounded like you were trying to contradict me or something that's all. No big deal Christopher.

i'm glad they didn't just give leadership to Robin. and Aqualad makes more sense, he is the calm and logical one anyway. its also a nice change from Teen Titans.

^ I'm thinking that is why they decided to do that. Plus it's a new character and they probably wanted to him something to do. It makes sense to start off with. One of the things that I'm interested with is the group dynamic, how everyone interacts with each other and the friendships (and I assume romances) they form with each other as the series progresses.

like the new team. though my only problem with it is they have the aqualad wich was introduced in brightest day and is the son of black manta. miss martian is alright and superboy's origin is different , robin and flash are fine and speedy is an @$$ any way.lookin forward to when he becomes aresonal . episode three was excellent and I liked how they did bane and kobra . and I love the silver age justice league headquarters.

^ They decided to use this Aqualad because he's the current version of the character and someone who Geoff Johns has been pushing since he created him. The same deal why Jamie Reyes is appearing in "Smallville" instead of Ted Kord, although Kord will still be making an appearance.

I was just curius about the new aqualad an all I am not ditching the show.
I love dc over marvel and any supper hero comic universe .
now for supernatural type fiction dark horse rules there also for science fiction
as well as idw. new kids on the block .
when will batman brave and the bold come back. I think a great line up would be
batman brave and the bold, young justice and star wars the clone wars.
then ben 10 and all the rest.:mallory::drool::drool::drool:
