Jetfreak's Alternate Universe Excelsior...

Thanks, guys. :) And, thanks to all of those that kept on me... I'm really glad I re-did those the way I did.

OK, did some more... I detailed the nacelles some more, and started the saucer. I'm going with the idea (right now) that I'm going to do one row of vertical windows around that thin rim of the saucer, kind of like the E-D has got. Not sure how that'll look, yet, but we'll see. :)

There'll probably be a few TNG movie type details showing up on this thing, as well... no escape pods, though!

More later...

Looks good to me :) :techman:

This is awesome. The only change I would make would be move the nacelle pylons aft leaving the nacelles themselves in the same place relative to the saucer and secondary hull. That would make the ship scream Excelsior to me.

Looking at the side view, the saucer is not much of a direct rip of the original Excelsior. A riff, maybe, but the upper surface is more curved, it lacks the "Stepping" that happens before the rim and the sensor array is lower (and of a different design).

I'm sure a professional graphic designer might notice even more.

Methinks this may be the one ship that MadMan regrets posting here, lol... I mean, there's just no winning with this one... the original concept sketch looks hella cool, and even very Excelsior-like, but somehow, it's just not translating well enough into 3D, lol...

MadMan... IDK if Jetfreak also provided you with orthos of this ship, but if so, at this point, I'd really just stick to what we see in the sketch. In retrospect, I think for all our bitchin' and bellyachin' about how to change the ship, we may have done more harm than good, lol.

I know I said the ship looks like a ripoff of the JJ-Prise, and I think a big part of that may have been your use of the JJ-Prise saucer as a placeholder, and for that, I have to apologize, because obviously, the saucer in his sketch is more Excelsior-looking.

So, yeah... I think at this point you ought be ignorin' us, and just build the beastie straight to the original sketch and any orthos that Jetfreak sent you. We'll sit back and watch, lol.

Nah, it's no problem. :) The Neck and the nacelles look better after I re-did them, anyway. :)

About the saucer, I have some ideas about where I'm going with the saucer, that deviate from the drawings again... some of them might not work out, of course, but I'm hopeful.

As far as the ortho's go, he did give me a side and top view, with a sketch of the front, that I posted earlier on... but, I'm sure I'll deviate again. :)

This is awesome. The only change I would make would be move the nacelle pylons aft leaving the nacelles themselves in the same place relative to the saucer and secondary hull. That would make the ship scream Excelsior to me.

I agree with that... The pylons are a wee too far forward... But whatever.

Let me preface this with my disdain for the ubber size of the nu enterprise... That said. MadMan's ship really reflects the scale of the nuExcelsiour in relation to the nuenterprise, and it really works here.

By abondoning the idea of "using" an almost exact copy of the original Excelsior saucer (like they did with the TMP enterprise), it's allowed him to make the larger scale work more effectively as far as I'm concerned.

This ship, to me, is a truely in-spirit of the original Excelsior. Taking the shapes and specific details, twisting them around into something quite graceful looking. And more balanced dare I say (because I get kicked in the balls for bashing the nuprise) then the nuenterprise.

One thing I was really taken aback by was the warp nacelles. The cowling is a truly clever interpretation of the original's... Wrapping them around like that really is a good idea. My only suggestion would be to tone down the thickness of those cowlings. Make them more subtle looking- almost more fragile looking.

Anyway dude. This is a freaking awesome looking ship. I'm really looking forward to seeing it completed.

While I always love what Madman does when modeling and the changes he has made. I feel that he is getting very far away from the source material here. Personally I would love to see him model closer to the original drawings and then if you want to go off on this tangent and do a variation, go ahead. Just my two cents.

Thanks. :) I see what you mean about the cowlings... they started a little thinner, but I thought they looked better overall being a little thicker. I may have some other details for them, though. :)

It's true, I am deviating more than I thought I would, but too many ideas keep coming up. Jetfreak did say it was OK to make changes... the Secondary Hull is staying as close to the way he drew it as I can, as will be the bridge area and the crystals up on top and everything. I do have his permission to make changes, of course. :)

Well, some updates. Not much, but something, anyway...

Contrary to what seems to be popular opinion, I love this ship just the way it is. Although i'd change the bussards from red to blue. Not because "JJ did it" or "Thats how the original Excelsior was", but because I think it would just look better.

Curved nacelle struts... I think they look GREAT - but doesn't that complicate the routing of the conduits sending juice from the warp core?

Personally, I advocate the idea of warp cores & warp field generators self-contained within each nacelle (then the struts can be whatever shape you want!) As an added benefit, you don't have all that prickly energy and toxic coolant down there with all the people. I don't even know how the 23rd, 24th, and 25th century versions of OSHA let them get away with it.

Thanks. :) That color change might still happen... or I might go totally CRAZY and go with Green. :) I'm going to wait and decide when I get closer to finished to decide for sure. I'm thinking about doing a more green highlighting on this one, just because Enterprise is more blue.

So... no aft phasers or torpedoes? Other than that it's great.

They're coming, yes... don't worry. :) 1 rear torpedo, and 2 phaser banks...

I wouldn't think so... but I also like the idea of the warp reactors being in the Nacelles... What we usually see in the "engine room" ought to be the rest of this ships power system. I loved it in Enterprise, when they had to go up inside the Nacelles... I think they should always do that, when they're working on the Warp Drive. :)

The struts curved on the Galaxy class and the Ambassador class.

Beautiful work as always MadMan, but the "sweeping" curved struts actually take away from it looking like an Excelsior and put the nacelles a little too high.

Of course, overall proportion is the only issue I have with the JJPrise, I didn't care that is was different looking or too advanced.

MadMan1701A, this new Excelsior is the secks. I love the nacelles, in particular. After catching up the past few pages, I'm sooo glad you redesigned them.

Good job! Carry on. :D
