Avengers: EMH 1.1/1.2 "Breakout" pts 1&2

They should all be 2-3 parters. The multi-parters have been a lot better with more room to breathe and get big.

eh, i'd like them to do 2-3 parters every once and awhile. otherwise its just going to feel like Justice League.

Didn't really think about it until the second watch of "Widow's Sting", but it's interesting that Viper stepped forward to save Hawkeye when he was first captured. Knowing what we know from the end of the episode, what was the true motive there?

I just saw "Widow's Sting" and I loved all the modern day references. Mockingbird! Dead Skrull lady! The Gorgan and Hydra!

maybe to replace Hawkeye and infiltrate the Avengers.

Next Avengers just looked terrible IMO, but if there is nothing else on i may give it a try.

Next Avengers I was fully prepared to despise but it's actually a pretty good story. Good animation, good action, interesting what-if story.

Also those characters recently made their first in-continuity appearance in the new Avengers comic book (the Bendis / John Romita Jr one).

But here we had Iron Man wearing his full armor and mask 100 percent of the time, even when he was in a meeting with Fury. That doesn't make any sense. The others' gear is probably just uncomfortable, but using that super-high-tech armor has got to be costing Stark money every second he has it powered up. You'd think he wouldn't use it without need. Come to that, I question whether SHIELD would even allow him to wear it aboard the Helicarrier, given how heavily beweaponed it is.

Well given SHIELD's history Tony was probably just playing it safe that they would be attacked by some Super Villain.

In the comics Tony does seem to wear his armor a lot, even when he's just working on something, all he'll take off is his helmet and maaaaybe the gloves. And this dates back all the way to the late 60s to the modern era, hell when he was Director of SHIELD, he wore his armor almost all the time, felt rare that we'd actually see Tony in a suit that wasn't made of metal.

Although maybe it was like a full body chastity belt... y'know, so he wouldn't maul the female agents who all looked pretty frellin' hot.

Darren: Mr. Seinfeld and Mr. Costanza debated on whether or not iron man wore some sort under garment between his skin and his iron suit…

George: (Interrupts) And I still say he’s naked under there!

Jerry: Oh that makes a lot of sense!

Semi-OT again...

Just caught this on the DVR, and I feel sort of the same way. While I wasn't "prepared to despise" it, I didn't have very high hopes. I really only watched it because I have recently become a fan of Christopher Yost by way of his Marvel Comics work, and have just recently discovered that he has worked on Marvel Animation.

I have to say that I rather enjoyed it. The kids were kind of annoying at first, but I liked how they came together in the end.

While watching it, I really found the character Pym to be realllly annoying, but laughed out loud when the team...

... needed to piss-off Bruce Banner in order to bring the Hulk in to the battle, and they sent Pym to do the job. Who else? :guffaw:

The team was missing a little something until they met Hawkeye and Mockingbird's son, and then they clicked just fine. I think Francis Barton was my favorite Next Avenger, as he definitely takes after his dad, saving the skins of the super-power folks with just his wits and his bow and arrows.

My favorite bit was when Francis, who blames Stark for their current situation, asks Stark why he should help them and what his father would have done in his place...

  • Stark: Clint? He would have punched me in the face. Then he would have helped me.
  • Francis: You really did know my father...
:guffaw:
Apparently, the sales on this DVD weren't spectacular, but I would watch a sequel.

As for the kids appearance in the Avengers comic, I have to think that that was a slightly different alternate reality than the movie. Not just only because of Torun's outfit, but for other spoiler-ish reasons that I don't want to posssibly ruin for others.

Next Avengers wasn't bad, but it could've been better. I wish the kids had been drawn and cast a bit older. Also, Ultron wasn't an entirely credible threat. If he could take control of all electronics, why was it taking so much time for him to conquer the world? In today's wired world, that should've given him instantaneous global domination. And it's hard to believe he would've relied simply on showing up in person and punching people to defeat them; why not just drop a nuke on them when he had their location? Yeah, I know, that wouldn't have been as effective an action story, but then maybe they should've chosen a villain who wouldn't logically have been far more unbeatable than they needed him to be.

I thought Planet Hulk was pretty good, certainly the best of Marvel's original animated movies to date. I think Rick Wasserman did a much better job as the Hulk than Marvel's usual Hulk-of-choice Fred Tatasciore. My one real problem was how casually the Red King revealed to Caiera how he'd tricked her. Didn't he realize what it would inevitably lead to? That one should definitely be on the Evil Overlord List if it isn't already.

The first Kang episode was pretty good. I particularly liked the character interaction in the first couple of scenes. I wish we'd get a higher ratio of conversations to action in this show, though I know that's a futile hope. I'm surprised at how the story unfolded; I assumed the opening scenes with Cap telling Tony he needed to learn the basics and be able to get by without his armor were a setup for a climax where Tony's armor would fail or be taken from him. But instead, it was his technology that helped him save the day as usual, although that was getting back to "basics" compared to Kang's tech. So it's a somewhat nebulous but at least unpredictable payoff to the opening setup, and it's a synthesis of both men's views rather than just Tony learning that Steve was right all along.

There's also some promising ambiguity in the idea of Kang coming back to conquer us in order to save us from annihilation in the Kree-Skrull War. I hope that ambiguity is developed more in subsequent episodes. Though Kang could've stood to be a lot more specific about just how Cap's presence causes the destruction.

The biggest ambiguity failure here was the Negative Zone prison sequence. In the comics, that was a Guantanamo Bay allegory and there were all sorts of tough questions raised about the violation of due process and civil rights. Here, the only hint of an ethical issue is Jan's line "That's a lot of Ultrons." Quite a letdown.

But at least we got a clear mention of the Fantastic Four and even saw a picture of them, though they weren't actually present in the story. Maybe we'll get a crossover later.

Good episode. I haven't read a lot of Kang stories but I like the idea of him. He was definitely a bad-ass here, easily kicking the entire team's butt with his hands behind his back (literally).

Is his face really blue like that or that supposed to be a mask or paint?

It's was a Mask in the original Kang stories - don't know if they'll change that for this version of him though.

I really enjoyed today's ep. Can't wait for part 2.

Here is another interview with Chris Yost. In this interview, he briefly addresses a point that became a subject of discussion in the other Avengers: EMH thread, some time back...

In the Captain America - focused newsreel, its clear that in many ways, Hydra has replaced the Nazis as the main threat to Europe in the 1940s. Do the Nazis exist in this world? Are the Axis powers now Hydra, Japan, and Italy?

YOST: Yes, Nazis exist in this world. Hydra is a branch of the Nazis. The Axis powers are Germany, Japan and Italy. Hydra was the focus of Cap's activities, though, as well as the Howling Commandos... and thus they were our focus.

New Marvel Animated Show: 'Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes'

has anyone been following this?

i've only seen a couple episodes including the one that came out today and it's a really well done show.

great voice actors, brilliant fight sequences.

just an overall really well done show.
