"Face of the Enemy" Line-by-Line

As someone who's been on both sides of the fence, having participated in one marathon and also being buzzed trying to post, only to get passed by the marathon at warp speed, I agree. Let's try to allow more people to participate, otherwise we run the risk of ending up with only two or three people doing this.

I like it how it is. I've been out posted in marathon postings before. It'll happen again. I've even only been able to post once or twice because I didn't have time to post more. It's fun. Even when I'm left out, it's fun.

Besides, the 2 minute rule that was proposed in the previous thread would only give the problem of posting and editing to someone else. It could also slow the thread down long enough for people to lose interest.

I actually am not sure that last evening would qualify as a marathon. A Marathon finish to me is where the thread is ended after multiple hours of back and forth posting. Vanyel and I did finish it last night but it was more like an hour, and we were already in the last third of the episode, it's not like we were just past the opening credits, then didn't stop til the episode dropped.

I don't want people to be left out, that wouldn't be right, but by the same token, some of us have had a lot of fun by having great back and forths between us, and it would be a big shame if that were to end. The 2 minute thing i proposed at the end of the last one was for when there are situations when there are more than 2 posters in an attempt to maintain some order during those. And I don't think would be that useful in a situation with only 2 posters.

I've been on both sides too, there were a few episodes that finished while I was at work and unable to post. And, well that happens. But I often wasn't dwelling on that, just wanting the next one to get going.

This must mean something. It took us 3 day, 3 hours and 36 minutes to complete the episode. All 3's and a multiple of 3.

Are we on an island with polar bears and a smoke monster?

How long the marathon lasts isn't the issue, it's the idea that it's just two people tag-teaming to finish the thread, regardless of how long it takes.

Limit yourselves to 3 or 4 consecutive posts and then take a break for a few hours. It's not a race or a contest. Nobody wins anything of value if they get the last line or finish the thread in a certain amount of time.

No, that means we're in a time loop and Data sent 3s to help us get out of it :D

If nobody wins anything, then nobody looses anything.

I find it more fun to post quickly. Sometimes I have to edit my post, sometimes I don't. It's a gamble. Last night was pretty easy, I had about a handful of posts that needed editing. In the previous thread I was editing every couple of posts. I find it fun to have to keep up.

Jump in at any point. Just pick a spot and line you want to start at, keep reloading the page and post when your turn comes up. You might get lucky, you might not. If you're not lucky, edit; if you are lucky pounce on the next line.

It's a game. Have fun, jump in and play.

Good one. Forgot that. If I win, I think I know my choice. Which is an episode that just begs for a marathon posting.

3 to 4 posts then a mandatory break is tough to enforce and would take the fun outta the whole thing.

Personally I think what would make things better for everyone is if we got the next episode going. It probably makes us more apt to speed through something when there's days between threads. Which both does and does not make sense, but what are paradoxes for?

Well, for better of for worse, I've sort of become the de facto leader of these threads. And so I feel that I need to say something here before we go forward. But, truth is, I really don't know how to handle this.

This isn't a contest. There's nothing to be won or lost here. This is all just for fun. It seems like, though, that some people aren't enjoying these threads as much because they feel like they can't get in fast enough, and others feel like they would enjoy the threads less if there were restrictions placed on their participation. And I can see the valid points of both arguments.

So, since we're all friends here and this isn't a flame war that mods are having to step in and put out, I'd like to suggest this: Let's not try to set any hard and fast rules about number of posts in a row or how many times a person can post in a day or anything like that. Let's not make this something that requires a page of rules to follow.

But, at the same time, let's try to take into consideration the fact that not everyone is as involved in these threads as some of us are, and perhaps we need to step back once in a while and wait for a few hours to see if someone else wants to jump in and participate. Not every time. Not with some enforced restriction. But just out of concern for others who want to participate, and just with some common sense applied to whether or not a thread, or several threads in a row, have been moving so fast that some are feeling excluded.

Does that seem reasonable and make sense?

That sounds good to me. That's what I was thinking of, let's not go start having to make big rules on something we've been doing pretty good for what, a couple of years now or something like that? But at the same time, let's make sure everyone feels welcome to jump in and participate. I think we can do it, we're all reasonable and mature adults. Except for LeadHead, of course.

I'm kidding. I'm kidding! I'm kidding!! You're supposed to laugh now. Go ahead, laugh at that, it was a joke. Laugh now. Laugh, or I'm going to go get that lion from Myspace comments to bite your butt! lol!! :D

Well, would you rather be locked in a Klingon bathroom? Hmm? Hmm? HMM?!

btw, next episode, please? (nice, innocent face) :)

Alright, seems like we've reached at least somewhat of a consensus. Let's try that for a couple threads and see how it goes.

And with that...

The participants from our current thread are as follows:

1. CoveTom
2. leandar
3. 5 LeadHead Rings (aka LeadHead)
4. JanewayRulz!
5. Gul Re'jal
6. Vulcan Princess
7. Brian
8. ClawsThatCatch
9. Ziz
10. Alienesse
11. Enteprise1981
12. PianoWizzy
13. Vanyel

Those names should be in the order in which each person first posted to the thread. No "weight" is given for who posted more or less often.

(If anyone has been inadvertently left off the list of participants, please let me know and I'll try to make it up on the next go-around.)

And now, it's time for random.org to do it's magic...

*drumroll*

5 LeadHead Rings (aka LeadHead)!

So, apparently LeadHead decided to start bribing the randomizer again...

So, LeadHead, the next move is yours. Would you like to select the next episode we are going to do line-by-line? You are free to select the next episode or pass and I will re-run the randomization. You can pick any episode from any of the Trek series that you like. For reference, the ones we've done so far, ordered by series, are:

Where No Man Has Gone Before
The Man Trap
The Menagerie

The Doomsday Machine
Requiem for Methuselah
The Trouble with Tribbles

Once a new episode has been chosen, I will fire up the next line-by-line thread in the appropriate forum and post the link here.

NOTE: As has been agreed, when a person is selected as the "chooser," they will have 48 hours to post their selection. After 48 hours, I will assume they "pass" and will re-run the randomization.

Wow! Me Again? Okay, I'll do this, but if I come up on the next 2 or 3 I opt for an automatic re-run of the randomizer.

We have not ever done a 3 part arc, I know I'm going to be shunned because this is an Enterprise one, but I'm trying to be diplomatic about it. This arc has Brent Spiner in it!

Borderland/Cold Station 12/The Augments

It'll be fun to do a 3 parter and should stretch things out a bit, in combination with us trying to avoid going too overboard, should make sure more people have more of a chance to participate.

^ Wow, great minds think alike. That would have been my pick. This is my favorite of all the Star Trek three-parters, excluding DS9's second and sixth season finales which didn't have "To be continueds" at the end.

I think those actually should qualify, they've always been 3 parters in my mind. But we do have to maintain the to be continued rule I guess. Lets jump off that bridge when we get to it. :rommie:
