Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - The Left Hand of Destiny Book One.

I also borrowed some graphic novels from a friend, so I'm working through those one at a time. I've read hardcover books five and six of The Walking Dead, as well as Brian Azzarello's Joker, Serenity: Those Left Behind, and Serenity: The Shepherd's Tale. I'm currently reading Halo: Helljumper, to be followed by Halo: Bloodlines, after which I'll move onto the first three Gotham Central hardcovers.

Currently reading Last Year at Marienbad by Alain Robbe-Grillet, translated by Richard Howard. It's the source material for the movie, but it's not a conventional screenplay -- much more text, much less dialogue, but then it's not the most conventional movie, either. Lots of shots from the film, too.

^ L'année Dernière à Marienbad not the most conventional film, you say? Nothing like a passing understatement to brighten my day, Steve. That screenplay by Alain Robbe-Grillet, by the way, earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Writing, Story and Screenplay.

I've got a few books to start courtesy of today.

There's the Typhon Pact series to start and a couple from the Honorverse (Crown of Slaves, Torch of Freedom) that I hadn't got yet.

I've also got War of the Worlds to read:)

Zero Sum Game starts off ok, but slows down as it nears the middle. I'm finding it a tad hard to get back to it. I do hope it picks up in the second half.

For me, this has been the Christmas of Treklit. Nothing modern, but lots and lots and lots of Trek books, some of which (like the full Spaceflight Chronology) I've wanted for about 15 years. Quite a bit of extremely obscure books too - like the 1978 Official Star Trek Cooking Manual. I'm currently reading Trek: The Printed Adventures by James Van Hise and Best of Trek #16.

Oh yeah, and what may be the nerdiest fanzine in the history of the universe: Starship Design: An Interstellar Forum for Naval Power. It's so hardcore it's dated March 2280 and has an RRP of 20 credits.

I love Christmas!

It's a remarkable film. I'd heard a bit about it occasionally, but when one of my favourite musicians went on about it in an interview, he really piqued my interest. (That musician is John Foxx, leader of the pre-1980 lineup of Ultravox, the band that melded Bowie, Roxy Music, Kraftwerk, and punk rock, who's gone on to be an influential artist in electronic and ambient music, as well as a cover art designer for novels by Salman Rushdie and Jeanette Winterson, among others.)

I liked the movie enough to buy the BFI book and the aforementioned screenplay, and I've tracked down an academic thesis as well. Seeing the movie once is only the beginning of he experience, not the end.

I honestly just put Star Trek Destiny III Lost Souls down a minute ago.

My mind = blown. Seriously.

Finished Eureka - Substitution Method earlier today. About to start on Crucible: Kirk - The Star to Every Wandering.

:D Nothing like it.

I received The Confession by John Grisham for Christmas and finished it last night at dawn. Now I'm returning my pre-Christmas reading, Bernard Cornwell's Sword Song.

Space: 1999: Earthfall by E.C. Tubb.

The final "Year One" novel, published in 1977, it's a complete re-imagining of the series from the ground up. And it's, surprisingly, really good.

Much better writing that Tubb's Dumarest books (well, better than I remember them, I haven't read one in over 30 years.)

I didn't even know Earthfall existed until the late '90s or so, and yeah, it's really something -- an official tie-in novel that just throws out the rulebook entirely. Probably the most enjoyable Space: 1999 novel, though a couple of the Powys Media novels have been pretty good, too.

(Picked up a couple of the Dumarest novels cheap once, and wasn't impressed enough to look for any more.)

Currently reading SCE What's Past. Just started Distant Early Warnings.

Not overall impressed. Echos of Coventry was ok but a bit anti-climatic.

Finished Eureka: Brain Box Blues by Phaedra Weldon (as Cris Ramsay) last night.

Let's just say that I'm glad Rosenberg is writing the third book again, this one was a mess.

Next up is Thypon Pact: Seize the Fire by Michael A. Martin.

Finished Earthfall last night, now I'm starting Space: 1999: Earthbound, also by E.C. Tubb.

This is a bit of an oddity: published in 2003 by Fanderson, the Gerry Anderson fan club, this consists of the novelizations of 3 Space: 1999 scripts: Earthbound was a Year One episode that was never novelized back in '75, and The Face Of Eden and Exiles, which were two scripts written during the production hiatus between Year One and Year Two which were later extensively revised by Year Two producer Fred Freiberger. These are novelizations of the original Year One versions of the stories -- No Maya or Tony Verdeschi, they include Year One characters such as Victor Bergman and Paul Morrow.

Finished Zero Sum Game last night (Enjoyed it). I've moved on to Seize the fire and Rough beasts of empire is on the schedule after that.

My current reading list consists of the following books (K = Kindle) (L= Library) (P = Paperback)

  • Zero Sum Game K
  • Seize the Fire K
  • CSI Shock Treatment K
  • CSI Skin Deep K
  • CSI Dark Sundays K
  • Rough Beasts of Empire K
  • Veracity L
  • Dune L
  • TNG: Sins of Commission P
