Why are there no overweight or obese people in Star Trek?

Yeah, and it's getting worse. http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/trends.html

It's easy to blame genetics, society, fashion-magazines, McDonalds, global warming, science, etc... but at the end of the day, it's up to us to make a change. There are only a few obese people in Trek, because they are supposed to be enleightened. They take care of themselves. And it's not about looks, it's about health! Seriously, just look at the list of diseases that you have a larger probabitlity of getting if you're overweight:

-Hypertension
-Dyslipidemia
-Diabetes
-Corony heart disease
-Stroke
-Gallbladder disease
-Osteoarthritis
-Sleep apnea
-Cancer (breast, colon and endometrial)
-etc...

Sure, taking care of yourself might not save you, but when you have the opportunity to increase your chance to a healthier life, you have to take it. Everything else would be like.. going into a one-night stand without a condom. Wait. There's a connection in here, somewhere... ;) :)

One is a self-inflicted gunshot wound that can be healed with the proper care. The other is a bullet to the brain pan.
Correction, The other is a self-inflected bullet to the brain pan. Unless you acquire AIDS through violence, birth or some kind of medical accident, most likely your getting AIDS was not only your own fault, you were probably trying as hard as you could to preform the actions the resulted in your getting AIDS.

Obesity on the other hand can (in some cases) be the result of genetics or genuine psychological problems.

Or can you in fact get fat from a dirty needle?

:)

Just a thought. If, in Star Trek's time, all of the bad side effects of smoking can be easily cured. Maybe smoking will make a resurgence and be popular again.

BillJ I find it sad that you can laugh at a very serious topic. I am sorry that I compared your obesity to a homosexual disease. But go ahead and laugh at me for caring about people -straight, gay and overweight. Enjoy your hate.

1. I'm overweight. So I'm a bit familiar with that particular affliction and the fact that it can be controlled with effort.

2. Calling 'AIDS' a homosexual disease shows a bit of ignorance on your part. There are many ways to contract it.

Enjoy your hate.

I really think this says it all.

I thought I call it that because that's what your hate seems to be most centered on.
And sadly I don't think you can be tolerant of different opinions or sexual orientations . So you are right "hater" says it all.

Now now, Earth is already shaking from all that fat jiggling up and down caused by your constant, gay chest bumping.

Obesity is the aids of the new millennium.

This has got to be one of the most ignorant statements I've ever seen on these boards. And that's really saying something. :guffaw:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obesity_in_the_United_States

This shows an obesity rate of 26.6% for the 2007 year.

That doesn't mean its' not a problem. But to equate it with AIDS is just ridiculous. One is a self-inflicted gunshot wound that can be healed with the proper care. The other is a bullet to the brain pan.

I'm not exactly sure what your reading into my posts, but whatever your taking... I want some.

I'm offended you compared AIDS to Obesity, because AIDS exists on an entirely different level. If I gain a few extra pounds... I can control it with effort. If I contract AIDS, it's not 'if' but 'when' I'm going to die in the majority cases.

Going forward, you may want to read the words on the page instead of trying to find offense where none was meant. :techman:

You want to know why there are not fat people in Star Trek? It's because the transporter beams it out of them.

No need for toilets either! Just step on the transporter pad and beam the poo and urine away!

You and BillJ BOTH need to dial back the aggressive posts and abandon the ridiculous comparison of obesity and AIDS.

Keep the discussion Trek-specific (as suited for the General Trek forum).

What bothers me is that while there are a few chubby guys on Trek, there isn't a single chubby woman. Well, except the four-armed keyboard player who flirted with Riker, but she's alien and doesn't qualify for the discussion.

As long as there's an abundance of food available, I simply can't believe that humans grow out of eating more than they need to. Some people are genetically predisposed in a way that makes it harder for them to resist fatty and sweet foods than others. Maybe they'll have a genetic therapy available for people so that they can resist temptations better. Sure, on board ship it's easy enough in a military environment to enforce a strict diet, but people on Earth and on other planets still mostly cook their food.

I don't think all chubby people are ridiculous and stupid, who would do anything for a couple of candy bars. Some of them maybe attention seeker, but nothing serious nor does it make them ridiculous. If they learn to stop feeling pity for themselves, it would be easier for them to loose weight. It's difficult for them because of how they are portrayed on the medias, and this whole idea that puts the idea into people's head that if something is wrong with you or if your life doesn't turn out the way you plan, then it must be other people's fault. Instead of dealing with the problem, they blame it on other people and so lack the will power to do anything about it. Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar.
