SGU CANCELLED!

Well the Ancients purposely put gates on worlds that could support human life. That would necessitate plant life and filming in a Vancouver Forest is cheaper than creating a whole brand new planet from CG.

Yes, like there's only two options: Vancouver and CGI. :guffaw:
^^ In some early SG-1 episodes they still had the decency to use color filters to make it look different.

They did that once (The First Commandment) and even that had a story explanation (Goa'uld shield generator).

Formulaic storytelling can be fine, but you need to have really awesome characters and fun stories to make it work. A show like Stargate that is in the middle of its 17th season is going to have to try REALLY HARD to make the formula work.

And I agree about realism not needing to be boring. Realism should be more about the characters and their reactions. Farscape is one of the most bizarre shows out there, but it has very realistic characters. Their actions are based both on their established personalities and their current circumstances, and they don't act out of character just for the sake of drama.

Indeed. 24 was for realism and it wasn't nearly a boring as SGU. But SGU wasn't realistic. The actions of the characters were slaves to the plot. A lot of decisions didn't make sense unless you put then in perspective of the story they wanted to tell.

I think a movie that was like Indiana Jones in space would be great. Have the focus on adventure and discovery (with some action and fighting along the way) through a small group in a private ship. Maybe they're investigating some larger-scale mystery. There wouldn't the angst, whining, or darkness of many newer series. Again, think Indiana Jones in space for inspiration.

That was Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda <--- It sucked, hard.;)

Obviously it comes down to the execution. I never watched Andromeda, but I'm talking about a non-sucky execution of the premise. Anything can suck if it's not done correctly.

Mr Awe

Andromeda was awesome in its concept, very big idea sci-fi and it incorporated "advanced" ideas not usually seen in pop space opera because it is assumed Joe Average wouldn't be able to empathize with them. Things like major human augmentation, transhumanity, and a symbiote machine intelligence / organic culture with ships that are a straight nod to Iain M. Banks' Culture cycle.

In point of fact, even the first season of the show was not bad because the showrunner, Robert Hewitt Wolfe, did his best to create good sci-fi with a low budget and questionable actors.

It was after Wolfe was kicked out and the producers literally took ideas from the meatheaded Kevin Sorbo's egotistical suggestions, that the show became massively stupid. Its IQ literally went into the negative range, and it developed some of the most confusing, contradictory continuity issues of any TV show in history.

Call me a nut, but, I really enjoyed the characters and liked the show alot. It's a bit startling that we have no space travel sci-fi show on TV for the first time since 1987. At least I don't have to subsist on just the original 79 Trek shows and Buck Rogers. There's LOTS of good sci-fi to rewatch from the last 23 years.
Personally, I have doubts that Blood and Chrome will ever see the light of day, despite what they say. It'll cost AT LEAST twice as much as SGU to produce and I just don't see a willingness to fork over that kind of outlay right now on new sci-fi.

As for what type of space adventure would be best, I see Temis point about an all out action, no whiney battle sort of series. I think that might get tedious after awhile. Red Sky (5x05) as well.

Which again was for the storyline, the whol solar activity or whatever the hell it was going on in that episode. Though I believe in the end when the problem was solved, the colours went back to normal.

The point I was trying to make was they did not use colour filters just to make the forest look different, there was usually a story purpose behind using the colour filter.

There are times when the filter was used just to make things look different (season 5's The Warrior, season 10's Uninvited) but those circumstances usually hadthe same location filling in for multiple planets in the same episode.

Well, it just reinforces my long held opinion that all things Stargate suck major ass.

"We haven't given up on finishing the story we started," executive producer and series co-creator Brad Wright said via email Thursday.

On Dec. 16, Syfy confirmed on Twitter that it wouldn't pick up "SGU" for a third season. (It is set to air the remaining 10 episodes of Season 2 in spring 2011.) The "Stargate" franchise helped turn Syfy, then Sci Fi, into a cable network player when "SG-1" moved to the network in 2002.

Wright was on a trip when he heard about the cancellation, but since returning he has been exploring options for continuing the series in some form. He and officials at franchise owner MGM have been discussing several options, he said, and he's thankful for fan support.

"It's heartening to see so many people upset about Syfy's cancellation of the show," he wrote, "but it's important to remember that their license fee represented only a portion of our total budget."

Now, before you get on Twitter to falsely declare that the franchise is saved, read this paragraph carefully. This news does not mean any plan or timetable has been created for the revival of either "SGU" or the "Stargate" franchise, or any deal has been struck with a network. It simply means that the parties are looking into a lot of possibilities, but much work remains to be done before we can celebrate.

So be patient, keep the faith, continue campaigning for the show's return and be sure to watch the final 10 episodes of "Stargate Universe" Season 2 live on Syfy. (For other ideas, check out this article from Joseph Dilworth at Pop Culture Zoo.)

So it looks like they haven't given up on the show just yet.

Seems like it would be just another nail in the coffin for SGU that in it falls in the lowest ranks of syndicated shows.

Our beloved 20 year old ST:TNG gets stronger ratings for goodness sake.

^^On a similar note, didn't someone say that 23 year old episodes from TNG's first season were pulling in ratings equal to the Caprica episodes they replaced on SyFy?

The laughable part about that is that not only are these episodes which aired 23 years ago and are available on DVD, but they aren't even fan favourite episodes.

TNG is a very easy show to jump in an out of rather than the serialised nature of SGU.

From Mallozzi's blog:

"..Which brings me to a conversation I had with Stargate Creator/Showrunner/Executive Producer/Writer Brad Wright today. Alas, no details to offer (yet!) but suffice it to say he’s battling hard to ensure the franchise (that’s SG-1, Atlantis, and SGU) lives on and that the season two finale of Universe, “Gauntlet”, will not be the end. He’s adopted a clever two-pronged approach that, if successful, will see our awesome crew back at work next year. Nothing is guaranteed, but it’s great to hear he’s got a plan to make it happen. And, for the sake of the many, many Stargate fans out there, I really hope he succeeds "
